What is getting lost in all of this is that the letter to the then GG Adrienne Clarkson only asked her to consider all of her options. If a sitting Prime Minister asks the GG to disolve parliament she can grant his request and then ask the other members if they can form a coalition government, that is her discretion, but the GG has to ask first! The opposition were not asked to form a coalition by the GG therefore they have committed treason forming a coalition before being asked and by trying to usurp the power from the party that were duly elected. You trolls can dress this Coup d’tat up any way you like it but it still comes down to a subversion of the democratic process. If the GG grants these three clowns the power to rule somebody in the house should question the claim of Dion to be the next Prime Minister since I believe the Prime Minister must be selected by the House and it has always been assumed that the leader of the party with the most seats was by convention the leader of the House. Can you imagine the repercussions across this country if we elected a government that didn’t have a leader. Talk about a banana republic.

Most of ontario is no different than the west. It’s the GTA (including armpit hamilton) who will never get it (although, to be fair, neither will Vancouver and most of Man.)

This isn’t about bullying, this is about the Lib/NDP/Bloc (a single entity) knowing damn well they could not win the election on this platform, so the strategy was employed after the election. I agree with Stephan, I commented something similar on another thread. IMO the choice is very clear for the GG. My opinion would be different if the Bloc was included in the coalition, but they are not; so, the GG would be replacing one minority with an even smaller one.
One last thought. If the GG does grant the coalition the I believe this will lead to the opening of the Constitution. I have wished for this for years but the Senate is not a sexy enough issue. I believe(anecdotally) that MOST Canadians DO NOT WANT THE QUEEN MAKING DECISIONS IN CANADIAN GOV’T, and I’m English for Pete’s sake.

The oppsoition has put the GG in a difficult position. As I said, Stephen’s way out is to give her a way out by stating he will accept the coalition if he doesnt win a majority now that this is on tap.
There is no need for the GG to substitute HER JUDGEMENT for the Canadian people’s, it protects her office and it will generate legitimacy which is clearly not present.
Pre satate your advice and conditions to the GG, present your budget next week and let the opposition decide if they really want an election. This thing was built for show, not for seed, distance or pressure. They will either back down, we will get the election or the GG will put her thumb on the scale and spark the biggest crisis….it is her PM’s duty to warn her and advise her on what he thinks.
GG’s are NOT to meet with Opposition leaders, they just dont, one government at a time.
GG should get the advice and consent of THE PEOPLE.

Just had a look at the online petition and, as Kate noted, the signatures I piling up at a phenomenal rate. When I first ran into this petition there were about 15000 signatures and now the number is over 18000 with the number growing every time I refresh the screen.
It’s clear that a lot of people are very very pissed off.
What are we, your dump? Don’t send Goodale to the MB border. Isn’t there a toxic waste incinerator in Swan Hills? Send him westwards.

This afternoon I decided to tune into CJAD, the only English talk radio station in Montreal. Host Ric Peterson was interviewing two political pundits, one of them being the Globe & Mail’s, Dan Cook.
Mr. Cook stated unequivocally that the Harper gov’t in the verge of collapse and that the only thing really left for Harper to do is resign.
If Cook were writing a new Harry Potter-like series called “Danny Cook, Boy Wizard Wonder in the Great White North” then he’s very much entitled to write fiction. But as a journalistic scribe accurately reflecting public opinion he really owes it to all of us (and his own professionalism) to speak & write some semblance of the truth!
Last signature count was 51036. The number of people signing this petition has not let up and a perusal of the signatures/comments indicates that virtually everyone who signs this petition is serious about the topic. Actually I haven’t seen a single junk signature which is unusual for such online petitions.
My impression from a review of where people are from is that 90+% of the people from from Alberta/BC. I’ve emailed the URL of the petition to friends today and told them to spread the word so maybe it just isn’t as well publicized out east.
Before I sit down to write some software to crawl this site and grab all the signatures, I’m curious if anyone else has done this (especially Vitruvius who seems to have all of SDA archived for analysis).

This is because (to a large degree) Canada’s been a test bed for “creeping socialism” for decades. It’s a perfect petri dish, being so close-to and tied-to the (“evil”, of course) United States, with similar people, attitudes, commerce and style of conduct when it comes to interpreting western democracy.
