Reader Tips

Good evening ladies and gentlemen, welcome to SDA Late Nite Radio. Tonight, for your delectation and pursuant to our Thursday night wild-card show, to our previous mention of l’Hydroptère (and here ~ she’s the world’s fastest sailboat, at just under 90 km/h), and to our previous mention of the Brossard Trimaran, here is some footage of the Géant ORMA-class sixty-foot ocean-going trimaran in relatively calm waters, which gives one a good idea of her general scope (4:24), and here is Géant in somewhat rougher seas (3:30).

Your Reader Tips are, as always, welcome in the comments.

It can be hard to keep a sense of scale here, so do try to keep in mind: Géant is sixty feet long, or about ten times the volume of my Tornado KC 166. And then you have Reynold’s numbers, um, yes, here it is from Wikipedia: “if an airplane wing needs testing, one can make a scaled down model of the wing and test it in a wind tunnel using the same Reynolds number that the actual airplane is subjected to. If for example the scale model has linear dimensions one quarter of full size, the flow velocity would have to be increased four times to obtain similar flow behaviour”.

Géant ~ aye, what a boat she is!

  1. Regarding the increasing barage of govts announcing bailout packages for every Tom, Dick and Harry Banker around the world, and the soothing talk about getting past these ‘temporary’ world financial difficulties, I would highly recommend reading
‘Not Enough Money in the World to Fix Things’ by Chris Floyd @ http://www.rense.com/general83/noteno.htm
    The numbers are staggering.
    The problem is humungous.
And getting to the other side is going to take a chunk out of everybody’s life.

  2. Kate, I really like your new tagline, “When the Communists show up to protest the Nazis, you’re supposed to pray for an asteroid, not pick a favourite.” I’ve adopted it as a .sig.

  3. …the flow velocity would have to be increased four times to obtain similar flow behaviour
Why couldn’t we just reduce the molecule size? I mean, if we’re going to use computerized junk science to waste trillions of dollars, let’s go all the way, eh?

  4. re: “Not Enough Money in the World to Fix Things”
So much for the myth of “overproduction”, huh?

  5. Thrilling video of the Géant. Thanks for posting it.
Is it physically possible for a trimaran of this class to turtle, or does the triple-hull structure prevent that from happening? Is there a central keel, at all, or does the whole thing hydroplane past a certain speed?

  6. Glad you liked those, Exetaz. Géant has no keel, she has dagger-boards. Unlike l’Hydroptère, Géant is not a hydrofoil, but she certainly does plane, and as I understand it hydroplane is basically an American synonym for the English plane.

It is indeed physically possible for a trimaran of her class to turtle. But you really don’t want to do that !-) A long time ago I sailed a Hobie-class 14, and I could turtle her on a hot summer afternoon, for fun, and bring her back up with the righting line myself. KC 166 I never capsized, although I did come major- adrenaline- dump close a few times, since I used to like to take her out in storms by myself ~ never raced her though, funny that… Olympic-class Tornado catamaran… don’t like the clock… where was I… oh yes… See, the problem is, even two heavy people (her normal Olympic crew) can’t right a twenty-foot Tornado, one needs a motorboat.

Now, in the case of a sixty-foot Géant, assuming you didn’t actually discombobulate her entire superstructure (considering the Reynolds numbers involved in the flow forces of a Géant-sized capsize event), you would probably need a frigate (or at least a decent tug-boat) to pull her right again. Much less than optimal, eh what?

That’s one of the interesting things about those sailors. The ORMA-class sixty-foot ocean-going trimarans run races like the single-handed trans-Atlantic Route du Rhum, and, not to put too fine a point on it, there are no tug-boats out there. Single-handed. Wow.

And since we’re here anyway, you might want to check out Her Majesty’s
Canadian Ship Bras d’Or (1968 to 1971). Here’s a large image of her.

  7. I told my lib friends to invest in Halliburton years ago – at least if they lost sleep over the war, their pocket books would fill. It’s a win-win situation.
If Barry Hussein Obigov’t goes on to win, perhaps the following will be of minor conciliation to us all:

  8. It’s still all about the Liberals all the time in the MSM arm of the Party, or what’s left of it.
To look at some of the usuals like Oliver, one would think a major catastrophe had occurred in the land.
We see the likes of Joe Volpe popping out to offer his advice to Dion to step down and others saying he should take his time, it’s the old Liberal split at work. The factions could even be worse than the Chretien/Martin split. They have Rae and Ignatieff and some are looking for one of the old boys like McKenna or Manley to rescue them from the abyss.
Oh what a marvelous mess and to complicate matters they’re broke and as Liberals, they have never learned how to raise money. Their great hero Chretien can be thanked for that. He changed the rules, the big corporations, their main donors, can’t toss in big bucks. This was all part of his feud with Martin. He may have slayed Martin but they both did a good job on the Party as well.

A link between terrorism plots and hardcore child p@(nography is becoming clear after a string of police raids in Britain and across the Continent, an investigation by The Times has discovered. Images of child abuse have been found during Scotland Yard antiterrorism swoops and in big inquiries in Italy and Spain.
Secret coded messages are being embedded into child p[snip]graphic images, and paedophile websites are being exploited as a secure way of passing information between terrorists…

It is probably sensible for the police to take stock before assuming there is an inevitable link between terrorism, especially the jihadi variety, and child [snip]ography. But it is possible that an extreme interpretation of Islam that regards male sexual urges as so uncontrollable that all women have to cover themselves from head to toe generates in some men a confusion about their sexuality and appropriate sexual partners. An interest in child p@(nography may be one consequence…

  11. For those in or near Nova Scotia, the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Public Affairs is holding what they call a “DEBATE” on the theme: “Do Human Rights Commissions Threaten Civil Liberties? Looking at the line-up of speakers and moderator, it appears that the cause of free speech is less well served than it might be. 13. Douglas A. Blackmon, Two Families Named McCain
Lillie McCain is watching the presidential campaign from a singular perspective.
A 56-year-old psychology professor whose family spans five generations from the enslavement of her great-great-grandparents to her own generation’s fight for civil rights, Ms. McCain appreciates the social changes that have opened the way for Sen. Barack Obama to be the first major-party black contender for the White House.
But she also has an uncommon view on another American passage. Ms. McCain and her siblings are descended from two of about 120 slaves held before the end of the Civil War at Teoc, the Mississippi plantation owned by the family of Republican nominee John McCain’s great-great-grandfather…

  14. Melanie Phillips, God is not the enemy of reason
It is an article of faith (except, of course, among those who actually have a faith) that the dethronement of God by the apostles of secularism has ushered in an age of reason. Belief in the Almighty is now widely held to be a priori evidence of primitive stupidity.
In fact, we are living in a deeply irrational age, where millions are putting their faith in such mumbo-jumbo as astrology, parapsychology, paganism, witchcraft or conspiracies between sinister groups and extra-terrestrial forces. All of which goes to prove the truth of the old adage that when people stop believing in God, they will believe in anything.
Nevertheless, the belief has taken hold that religious faith is inimical to reason, as defined and exemplified by the scientific mind…

  15. > ten times the volume of my Tornado KC 166
I’ve got a 17′ Mystere catamaran, and I really enjoyed the videos. It’s hard to describe the feeling of controlling a boat on the edge.. Standing on the side of the windward hull, on the trapeze, with the main sheet in one hand, tiller in the other and jib sheet over my knee…. slicing through the water… awesome.

“Germany Backs Rescue Plan After Merkel Quells Revolt (Update2)
    By Brian Parkin
Oct. 17 (Bloomberg) — The German government’s 500 billion- euro ($672 billion) bank rescue plan cleared both houses of parliament after Chancellor Angela Merkel headed off a revolt by state premiers over their financial contribution.
The rescue plan, Germany’s biggest financial package since World War II, was fast-tracked through the lower house, the Bundestag, where lawmakers in Berlin voted 476 to 99 in favor today. The upper house, where the states are represented, backed the plan unanimously. President Horst Koehler, who signed the bill into law, said the steps are “appropriate.” ”
The re”Merkel”ble Angela of mercy arrives with a $500 billion Euro rescue plan. We have a marketplace!
No more 4 billion Reichsmarks for a loaf of bread and other assorted stories my grandmother told me.

  17. bluetech –
Yes, the CP candidate has indeed requested a recount to see if Keith Martin’s win holds up. It was just outside the margin needed for an automatic recount. I believe there is an automatic recount in Vancouver to see if Liberal Ujjal Dosanjh’s very slim victory holds as well.

  18. While I truly love the speed and power of air racing and NASCAR or Formula 1, there is something spiritual about hanging on to mother nature for a wild ride. And, although it shouldn’t be needed to said, sailing is not beating nature but rather going along for the ride. Ma Nature never fails to make one feel humble.

  19. What a comedic spectacle to behold on National TV, Danny Williams, in his pinstriped suit, announcing to all he’s ready to forget his differences with Mr. Harper!
What an arrogant little prig. He can forget it, put his hand out for goodies and not share the wealth according to the rules the ROC has to play by. Perhaps Danny Boy may be in for a few surprises. Mr. Harper holds no grudge but he does hold the power. Newfoundland’s Little Leader has no MP at the table in the governing Party of Canada, that cannot be a good thing.
This is one time many want revenge for his outlandish behaviour, calling the PM a liar and a fraud. He should have to apologize and say pretty please for every handout he’s sure to be looking for.

  20. Who is Obama campaigning for?
    “Obama’s Kenya ghosts”
    http://www.washtimes.com/news/2008/oct/12/obamas-kenya-ghosts/
About 50 parishioners were locked into the Assemblies of God church before it was set ablaze. They were mostly women and children. Those who tried to flee were hacked to death by machete-wielding members of a mob numbering 2,000.
The 2008 New Year Day atrocity in the Kenyan village Eldoret, about 185 miles northwest of Nairobi, had all the markings of the Rwanda genocide of a decade earlier.
By mid-February 2008, more than 1,500 Kenyans were killed. Many were slain by machete-armed attackers. More than 500,000 were displaced by the religious strife. Villages lay in ruin. Many of the atrocities were perpetrated by Muslims against Christians.
The violence was led by supporters of Raila Odinga, the opposition leader who lost the Dec. 27, 2007, presidential election by more than 230,000 votes. Odinga supporters began the genocide hours after the final election results were announced Dec. 30. Mr. Odinga was a member of Parliament representing an area in western Kenya, heavily populated by the Luo tribe, and the birthplace of Barack Obama’s father.
Mr. Odinga had the backing of Kenya’s Muslim community heading into the election. For months he denied any ties to Muslim leaders, but fell silent when Sheik Abdullahi Abdi, chairman of the National Muslim Leaders Forum, appeared on Kenya television displaying a memorandum of understanding signed on Aug. 29, 2007, by Mr. Odinga and the Muslim leader. Mr. Odinga then denied his denials.
The details of the MOU were shocking. In return for Muslim backing, Mr. Odinga promised to impose a number of measures favored by Muslims if he were elected president. Among these were recognition of “Islam as the only true religion,” Islamic leaders would have an “oversight role to monitor activities of ALL other religions [emphasis in original],” installation of Shariah courts in every jurisdiction, a ban on Christian preaching, replacement of the police commissioner who “allowed himself to be used by heathens and Zionists,” adoption of a women’s dress code, and bans on alcohol and pork.
Mr. Odinga and Mr. Obama were nearly inseparable throughout Mr. Obama’s six-day stay. The two traveled together throughout Kenya and Mr. Obama spoke on behalf of Mr. Odinga at numerous rallies. In contrast, Mr. Obama had only criticism for Kibaki. He lashed out against the Kenyan government shortly after meeting with the president on Aug. 25. “The [Kenyan] people have to suffer over corruption perpetrated by government officials,” Mr. Obama announced.
“Kenyans are now yearning for change,” he declared. The intent of Mr. Obama’s remarks and actions was transparent to Kenyans – he was firmly behind Mr. Odinga.

Well, at least now we know what the Prince of Darkness means by “change.”

  21. “Link between child p@7n and Muslim terrorists discovered in police raids”

  22. Newfoundland’s Little Leader has no MP at the table in the governing Party of Canada, that cannot be a good thing.Posted by: Liz J at October 17, 2008 11:50 AM
While that’s true, no Canadian or province should be excluded nor their concerns ignored, simply because they didn’t elect the ‘right’ ones.
Governments, and the professional liars and sychophants that make them up, are supposed to represent the entirety of the population, and have a responsibility to each individual. While policy choices differ, arguing another’s inconsequence because they didn’t vote for your guy – is dead wrong.
As an Albertan, I was ignored for 13 years by the Libranos. And my current concerns are ignored by my lightweight MP. It is what it is.
The last thing anyone should advocate is retribution, or chiding of another group or region in this federation, unless one fully supports seperation of the same, and decaring regional nation-states or free standing countries.
You, Liz, certainly don’t seem the type.

  23. A reliable source of mine, a connected Liberal, has advised me that Dion will be gone next week.
Also that the whole “draft McKenna” thing is just that, and Frank himself has already said “no” privately. After all, why would someone who makes nine million bucks a year (according to my source) want to be leader of the Liberal party as it is today? Give up some of those millions for what, a paltry two hundred grand, to do what? Lead the Liberals where?
Luckily, my source has a big mouth.
BTW, don’t forget: McKenna as Premier banned radar detectors in NB and was later caught operating one. What kind of a PM would such a hypocrite make?

  24. As for Danny Williams i am sure Harper will make him regret his actions, one way or another it will be payback time. I am sure this is already being worked on behind the scenes.

  25. More on the Prince of Darkness, from flea:
“He walks into a room and you want to follow him somewhere, anywhere,” George Clooney told talk show host Charlie Rose.
“I’ll do whatever he says to do,” actress Halle Berry said to the Philadelphia Daily News. “I’ll collect paper cups off the ground to make his pathway clear.”
Welcome to the cult of Barack Obama. According to Omen III: The Final Conflict, The Antichrist comes from Chicago. Just saying.

  26. The Liberal leadership race is (probably) going to end up as a Bob Rae/Michael Ignatieff show down again and, depending on who wins, will provide a new set of challenges and opportunities for the Liberal party …
Choosing Bob Rae will (likely) result in many conservative-Liberals leaving the party and (possibly) voting for the Conservative Party, while allowing the Liberals to attract voters away from the Green Party and NDP.
Choosing Michael Ignatieff will allow the Liberals to fight for the “Red-Tories” while they will bleed support to the NDP and Green Party.
With the divide in the party being what it is, it is also entirely possible that they could split the vote enough that someone could run-up the middle and capture the leadership; just like what happened with Stephan Dion. If this happens all bets are off, because they could (accidentially) find someone who could unite the party and lead the Liberals to victory or they could find another “Stephan Dion”

  28. The spectacle of former MPs walking into the sunset with annual pensions as high as $167,000 contributes to voter cynicism and low turnout at the polls, says the head of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation….
“It’s now a political career as opposed to a public service, especially when you get some of these guys who have been around for decades,” Taylor said.
And the trained seals and sock puppets in here get to cash those fully indexed pensions for life. C’mon Stevie! Save us from those big bad Libranos – after making 2,000 pqatronage appointments over the past few years, at least we’ve made sure a full pension can be had for 6 years of ‘service’ as an MP.
    Wow.
With over 50% of all MPs being teachers in their ‘former’ lives, maybe that teaches us something, no?

  29. The Rahim Jaffer Patronage Appointment Countdown Clock
As an early visible minority poster boy for Reform, he was touted as an example of the openness and inclusion of the party. That it was possible he could be a feeble minded blowhard with a hidden fetish for getting underlings to lie on radio – didn’t really matter. In fact, when indiscretions actually did emerge about his radio appearances – they were quickly buried, the channel changed, and life (and the government cheques) continued.
Despite having a retail coffee and snack kiosk in Edmonton, the ‘little fella who could’ decided to lever that appearance, and get those government cheques coming as fast as possible.
That the voters have now turfed an underperforming lightweight – who had the genius to give a victory speech before he was declared victor – one wonders how long until the Party rewards this gerbil with another stream of government cheques.
One wonders how those early days of coffee grinding prepared him for the future that awaits. And now that his new wife ensures that the government cheques continue coming to the Jaffer household – a happy ending is already in place.
And one awaits the inevitable patronage appointment that will deliver the next tranche of taxpayer earnings straight where the Party wants it. Lottery Commision? Harbour Committee? Foreign Trade Boards? Where to start?
So many jobs, so many partisans to reward….

  30. hardboiled…I am in Jaffer’s riding. As a buddy at work (who is from India) told me…do NOT vote for him. In India, the name Jaffer is held in very low esteem. They are crooks and lowlifes. I can honestly say that in the whole time he was in here, all he did was hire friends and family from the “old country” to work in his offices. As much as I abhor the NDP,we can’t do any worse. At least she, hopefully, will be trying to prove herself!

  34. Heather Malice is back at it in the Guardian:
    “Curses, Canada!”
I’m so embarrassed: we’ve just re-elected a PM who wants to recreate Bushworld – eight years after it went out of fashion
Foreigners talking loudly about moving to Canada should “President McCain-Palin” or “Prime Minister Cameron” come to pass, take heed. My beloved country has just held a pointless election, a real doughnut, and made a fool of itself, courtesy of its prime minister.
Oh God, I am so embarrassed.
I’m taking the Canadian flag off my luggage tag and telling everyone I’m from Iceland. Now there’s a shy puss of a country that screws up with elan.
Is there some way I can blame George W Bush for Canada’s humiliation? You betcha, as Sarah Palin would say.
Our prime minister, Stephen Harper, a strange man with an awkward gait, an absence of social skills, and the dress sense of that guy at the back of the hardware store who sorts nails for a living, is alone in this world in that he still adores Bush.
