Because I Know You’re Itching For A Thread On This – Bumped

(Lots of commentary at The Corner this morning to start you off.)
Watching live now as Obama waits for his intro at an event intended to be about education, arms crossed, looking irritated and tired. puts on a smile at the last moment.
He’s not taking responsibility for ill-chosen words, he’s firing back at the McCain campaign and the news media for a “manufactured controversy”. (Really? He didn’t notice the raucous laughter from his parisan audience when he said it?) Says that “enough is enough”. Cool. Which will ensure it remains high in the news cycle.
Good move, rookie.
Update

“Keep in mind, technically, had I meant it this way, [Palin] would be the lipstick. The failed policies of John McCain would be the pig, just following the logic of this illogical situation,” Obama said.”

The sound you just heard was the wail of Obama campaign advisers plunging their Blackberries into their hearts.
(The ones who survived this, that is.)

  1. Russ, its all about the context, McCain used it to describe the Hillary Care health plan, the big Zero used it to describe Palin. See the difference?

  2. He didn’t notice the raucous laughter from his parisan audience when he said it?

What the hell is he doing in France in the first place?

  3. I think the whole thing is great on account of how it helps Palin, but for those of you who think it was an accident.
    Obama attended Ivy League Columbia.
Obama wrote fiction as a young man, though never published any.
Obama attended Harvard University Law School. Obama was editor of the Harvard Law Review.
Obama whines that he writes his own speeches and is widely praised for his rhetorical skill.
Well, in junior college writing class you learn that you never just use any old metaphor if you are trying to make a larger point, you use a metaphor that will bring in extra resonances, like for instance a speech made last week that you widely made known hurt your feelings in which the woman who hurt your feelings used the term “lipstick” very prominently in the annecdote that first brought her to national consciousness.
If Obama didn’t know what he was doing, he should sue all of those schools for his money back.
You can’t have it both ways, either he is a master of rhetoric and a brilliant orator and a woman hating jerk, or he is Chauncy Gardner who has lucked his way to the top while being a complete idiot.

  4. I sure as hell hope Governor Palin doesn’t attempt to play the victim card over this. If she does, I’ll just write her of as just one of those self whining I’m the victim feminist type. Come on Sarah, show the whiny feminist what a real women is.

  5. South Carolina Democratic chairwoman Carol Fowler sharply attacked Sarah Palin today, saying John McCain had chosen a running mate ” whose primary qualification seems to be that she hasn’t had an abortion.”
And the hits just keep on coming. The clown posse Dems just can’t keep their campaign lucid, adult and without devolving into a freak show.
    Amazing.

  6. “Lipstick on a pig” was describing McCain’s policies alone. I can’t believe all you conservatives can skew the truth this way. I thought all you bloggers wanted to avoid the MSM spin. But you’ve shown everyone here that all of you are so capable of spinning things in your own way. MSM does not have a monoploy on media spin.
Disgusting and irresponsible toward those desiring to be informed.

  7. beardsycree – could you provide some proof that ‘lipstick on a pig’ was referring only to McCain’s policies?
After all, the most recent reference to ‘lipstick’ was made by Gov. Palin, and referred to herself.
The previous reference of ‘lipstick’ was made by Sen.McCain and referred to ‘prettying up’ Sen. Clinton’s health care plan. The word ‘pig’ referred to her old health care plan. Not Mrs. Clinton. Her plan.
A ‘symbol’ or metaphor used over time picks up meaning each time it’s used. When Obama used the term ‘lipstick’ this week, it had to include Gov. Palin’s use of the word. It referred to herself. And that’s who Obama referred to with his use of it – Palin. Not her idea. But Gov. Palin herself.

  8. BeardysCree, get real, watch the video, the audience knew exactly who it was directed at. If Obama made an inadvertent mistake it is one of epic proportions, he’s stupid. You review speeches to avoid those kinds of possible screw ups that might be misconstrued – “lipstick”, “pig” – not smart!
He’s an idiot. That’s the bigger point.
And, just who is taking away your ability to be informed here? What’s that mean?

  9. Do you guys know the difference between “infer” and “imply”?
McCain said the same line re Clinton’s health policy. Where was the outrage then?
And don’t kid yourself about McCain not going after Clinton. Remember this joke where he attacked her then 15 year old daughter:
“Why is Chelsea Clinton so ugly?
Because her father is Janet Reno.”
Oh right… this is just about the rightwing noise machine trying to avoid talking about how badly the GOP has screwed up over the past 8 years.
And they certainly don’t want to talk about how Palin is lying about her stance on the bridge, taking pay for being at home, or hiring a lobbyist to scoop up earmarks.
    That would be bad

  10. Poor Obama is caught in a web of his own making.
-he was the one to throw around the victim of racism card. To now claim that he was misrepresented as sexist on the Palin remark is ironic. He looks like a whiner and a hypocrite.
-he claims to be highly intelligent and write his own speeches so how could the lipstick remark be an unfortunate word choice. After all, his audience knew exactly what he meant as would any of his staff that heard the speech before presentation.
-his treatment of Hillary can give credibility to charges of sexism.
    – his promise to run a different kind of campaign and then have the kind of smears on Palin that took place over the last couple of weeks.
It is not individual incidents that are the problem, it is the trend.

  11. : BeardysCree
I think what you and others on the left don’t understand is it’s your own peep’s who’ve been insulted and who’ve perceived the comment as inappropriate. Obama owes his comments or apologies to his own supporters, we’re convinced over here, so you can save you’re breath on SDA. You should try to convince your peep’s on the leftarded blogs that Obama didn’t mean it that way.
This is typical Democrat strategy to blame the Republicans for racism/misogyny in the Democratic party. I remember pundits and Democrats alike blaming the Republicans for the racial tensions in the Democratic primaries. It’s just so crazy, it might just work!

  12. What’s cool is how the Repubs – and Kate – in their desperate bid to hold onto power have revealed their utter moral and philosophical bankruptcy.
Kate thinks it’s great that this invented controversy absorbs another newscycle ’cause it’s good for her side. What she’s saying is “Rove did a great job of lying this into being, now (she thinks) it’ll stay in the newscycle and fool more rubes! Right on!”
It’s like the Bridge to Nowhere. They’ve got Palin repeating the lie over and over everyday. By and large the media don’t contradict. Great! Kate and her pals think: The Big Lie – which we all know is a lie – is repeated for the rubes again.
The only way they can win is to lie. All they’ve got after all is McCain running away from 8 years of Repub rule by touting the phrase of Obama. (and here all this time I thought you guys were proud of Bush, thought he was great, etc.) McCain: an empty shell forced to lie and to adopt the catchprhase of his opponent. How appetizing!
So bring it on, right? But at what price?
No matter what happens, don’t forget: Right-wingers today – present company included – celebrate the propogation of lies astheir only chance for victory. That’s their platform now.
    What integrity!

  13. … Chauncey Gardiner
in the wikipedia version of his life’s events, it does perhaps mirror B. Hussien Obama’s version of how he sees things that are not in his world of Tv/ academia / senate.
“Chance is later confronted by a street gang. A street gang member pulls a knife on Chance and says, ‘Don’t give me no jive… I’ll cut up your white ass.’ Chance pulls out his Tv remote control as though to change the vision before his eyes. A lifetime of watching Tv has not prepared him for the realities of real life”
It seems there is a comparison there, to life as a community organizer, in academia, or in the senate. To looking at life, from within a clear globe. “just passin’ through folks…”

  14. real- what the heck are you talking about?
By the way, I just heard, on CNN, a woman senator from California, informing us that Alaska rapes and incest are ‘the highest’ ratio. But other assualts such as murder are higher in California, and robberies are double in California. (Bureau of Justice Statistics).
Same with other states – robberies and murder are all much higher in California, Nevada, Arizona, Louisiana and Washington, DC – well, it’s violent crime rate is 1,508 to Alaska’s 688. Murder is 29 to Alaska’s 5.4. Robberies 658 to Alaska’s 90.3. So? (Bureau of Justice 2006 stats per 100,000).

  15. BeardysCree:
    I’ll write this real slow.
Lipstick referred to Sarah Palin’s comments last week about the difference between a pit bull and a hockey mom being lipstick.
The comment, immediately after the applause had died down after the first comment; ‘you can wrap up and old fish in new paper and it still stinks,’ refers to McCain’s age.
McCain’s comments referred to the health care issue.
The first two were totally personal, McCain’s comments were about Hillary’s attempt to introduce a Canada/Cuba/North Korea-style health-care system to the US.
    Any questions?

  16. Since when Republican like black and good woman

  17. Palin fishes
Palin works blue collarly on her husbands fishing boat.
Smells like fish. Tastes like chicken.
Not being a dink, but he left the insult open to interpretation.
    Almost Messiah-like….no?

  18. whether he meant it as a slur to Palin or not, it doesn’t matter. The optics are ugly and the damage is done. BO…open mouth-insert both feet.

  19. I thought this was a dead issue from the start and at the NR Corner, Ramesh Ponnuru and Andy McCarthy are agreeing with me. Simply put, pushing the Palin sympathy card too much is akin to Obama screaming racism before it REALLY ever happens.
I’d prefer to examine Carol Fowler’s vile bile: “[John McCain had chosen a running mate] whose primary qualification seems to be that she hasn’t had an abortion.”
To that I posted this on my blog:
Classy Ms. Fowler, really classy. If one didn’t know better, they’d think such words came out of the mouth of a redneck. But you’d never accept that moniker so perhaps “blueneck” is more appropos?!? Whichever the case, inspired by Obama’s own words: “A pig with lipstick is still a pig, Ms. Fowler!”
    Kettle. Black.

  20. Real,
I thinks Kate’s point is that Obama is a rookie and is letting a small issue last longer than it should.
Obama ran a textbook campaign against HRC, mind you that was a campaign for the Democratic nomination. The campaign for President is different and it is showing. Unlike many here I believe Obama is quite a phenom, and there is much to admire about his campaign. But the criticism is that the campaign is all about Obama and his charisma, undeniable, his campaign marketing, powerful, and the historic idea of a black man becoming president. (Its an old story going back to Lincoln quite honestly and includes Clinton and Truman.)
Anyway, the lipstick thing is a tempest in a teapot that has been allowed to get out of control. Thats the point.
Why they keep targetting Palin is beyond me. Leave her alone for a week or two, let the shine come off then attack when you find the opening. But the Dems are shooting before aiming.
Anyway, I have siad it before I will say it again….never underestimate the GOP’s ability to win and never underestimate the Democrats ability to lose.

  21. Question for Sen. Obama: if you put lipstick on a black pig, would it still be a pig? Or could you marry it?

  22. What I do not like about Palin she is not smart woman that is all, the rest is joke and too many woman like her examel we all already seen in USA
Plain do not need to do abortion since her husband as all of seen take care of babies and she give them sleep drop not wake up in all the clapping time in the pary nomination
I do not know how many baby pig can born and do they able to made pig not born any more babies too if tehy can cut the pig have l ess babies then we can be free of lesterain from porky food and use insteadof beef and veal and goat and lamp and sheep or turky orchicken instead
pig also eat so much dirt from the floor i was wonder pig babies eat milk or dirt from the floor that is reason pig meat has so much lesterin in the leg of pork epscially
the guy said above take him 24 years try to understand woman I luahg alot today because the problems of men deal with woman is this that woman are not act or easy understand by all the men and woman know about it
if you deal with woman you must listne to them even the woman you face is dum for first few first at least 3 times when the woman order you then if you are not listen for 4th times taht would be fine
woman from mars and men from what !!! or reverse
using woman is good to let orer get through if not listne to them you are in big troubles
but peopel think deal with woman and men are the same are in big trouble in most of time

  23. Et, set you free, etc
there is not the tiniest sliver of a doubt but that the ‘lipstick’ comment referred to McCain’s economic policies. that was clearly set out in the preceding remarks.
That you guys insist otherwise could be because you’re dense (of course) but more likely you’re lying, lying, lying, because this is all John McCain has now, as his last hope to get to the White House. Lies. And you know it.
After all he’s the guy who ran on Experience – till he became Mr. Change – as Obama so wittily pointed out today.
When McCain laughed when one of his supporters called Hillary a “bitch” -yes that was the equivalent of a personal misogynist attack.
When McCain in the most gentlemanly manner made a joke calling Chelsea Clinton “ugly” – yes, that was a misogynistic personal attack.
When McCain called Hillary’s health care plan “lipstick on a pig” that was a policy criticism.
When Obama called McCain’s economic policy “lipstick on a pig” that was a policy criticism.
But keep lying, guys. Maybe it’ll win the election for ya.
After all, that’s what your ‘leader’ is doing, the empty shell squawking “change! Change!” (George W Bush, who he?)
    Haw! Haw! Haw!

  24. In all of this you just gotta know that Hillary is sitting back with a smug “I told you so” …
She said he wouldn’t be able to cut it in the final stretches and look … she was right … Palin has taken him so far off script and off his game the Dem’s gotta be worried. I love this election …
    GO Palin GO!!!

  26. There is a literary concept known as intertextuality. This is the idea that every text is shaped by every other, and that no text is interpreted without the context all other texts the reader has experienced and remembers, perhaps even on a subconcious leve (this may have been the effect Obama was aiming for). For example, when the Joker in the latest Batman movie has three viscous dogs on a leash, well that refers to the Greek myths which showed Hell as being guarded by three dogs. So when Obama refered to lipstick on a pig, he should have known that it would be impossible to interpret his remarks without bringing in Palin’s speech. This is the kind of things you learn at Columbia, or should.
It doesn’t matter. I asked my wife about it this morning, and she doesn’t follow politics anything like I do, and what she said, and she was just talking about the “old rotting fish” thing was, “That Obama has a nasty mouth!” She hadn’t even heard the pig thing.
So Obama should have known that it how he would be interpreted, so if he didn’t, he is not the braniac that you guys have been presenting him as.
This is why I call him Slowbama. His intentions don’t matter any more than that kid who burned down the Home Depot in West Palm Beach a few years back trying to prove that paint thinner wouldn’t burn.
Kaus has an interpretation of what Obama was trying to say here
    http://www.slate.com/id/2199595/#lipstickpig
Damage is done, we should move on. But it is fun when the leftards try to argue that Slowbama isn’t a mean woman hater, he is just a clueless idiot.

  27. wonder how come Palin hasn’t done any press conferences?
Let’s see she was nominated, what, ten days ago. Could be she is on the road campaigning, preparing for her VP debate, getting up to speed with foreign policy briefings, oh, and, she still has duties in Alaska and tending to her family. Seems reasonable to me. But, that’s not the answer you were looking for. Sorry things aren’t happening on your time table.

  28. “had I meant it this way, [Palin] would be the lipstick. The failed policies of John McCain would be the pig, just following the logic of this illogical situation,” Obama said.
Haw haw haw haw… so the verdict is in, Obama is a clueless idiot.

  29. “I’m not here to seek the good opinions of the media.”
    Remember that Real(ly stupid.)
And when she does meet the media she’ll kick their asses too. Another KO in the re-match.

  30. real – you are speaking only for yourself when you state that ‘there is not the tiniest sliver of a doubt’….
You see, I don’t agree with your certainty. I doubt. I think that Obama was speaking about Palin. Why? Because to use a term, ‘lipstick’ which had been made famous – not just spoken..but made famous..in the last few days by Palin..and insist that it only referred to a remark made by McCain a year ago…that’s a bit hard for me to accept.

  31. In other news: “Carol Fowler’s husband is Don Fowler, former chairman of the Democratic National Committee. He’s the one who recently was joking about Hurricane Gustav, characterizing it as God’s favor to Democrats. What a lovely couple they are.”
Carol Fowler, South Carolina Democrat Party Chairman, has described Sarah Palin as follows: ‘someone whose primary qualification seems to be that she hasn’t had an abortion’ .

  32. The debates should be good, what with the Obamessiah proving to be less than omniscient without the benefit of a teleprompter and Smokin Joe deferring the VP nomination to Hillary.
The Podunk Players go to Washington.
    Syncro

  33. “But keep lying, guys. Maybe it’ll win the election for ya.”

Comments like this are becoming more and more common. The Dems and the Libs are losing their morale much sooner that I expected. I thought they were going to pull a Zoolander and try to accept the award even though Hansel’s name was announced on the mic(or a Kanye West); but, it seems many of them are going to give up a few days into the race.
We have to maintain our momentum and not let the leftards off the mat. Individuals make a difference, and everyone can demoralize a leftard until the submit, and hand us both elections. Once they start conceding defeat it’s over. It will spread like a plague through their ranks and it will effect their voter turnouts. Just my opinion:)

  34. ET
The new meaning – is..Sarah Palin. A tough, fighting, representative of the people.
Obama did indeed refer to Sarah Palin in his statement. His meaning was: You can add ‘lipstick’ to a ‘pig’ (McCain) but it won’t change anything.
    And ‘lipstick’ meant..a woman.
Now, that was a blatant insult…

That’s how I saw it, ET, as did the audience who cheered.
This was a deliberate double entendre that the crowd understood.

  35. Obama tried to say something cute at the reps expense, instead he said something ugly at the dems expense.Lesson learned? Campaign lost.

  36. Well, ET
I guess that just proves you’re a craven prevaricator.
The statement took place in the context of a paragraph which does not mention Palin once.
McCain’s use of the phrase last year took place in the context of Hillary’s health care plan. But no-one accused him of attaching the phrase to Hillary herself (though he did famously refer to Hillary’s daughteras “ugly” and laughed when one of his supporters called Hillary a “bitch”)
Palin had used the word (not the term)’lipstick’ in a joke. Is no-one ever allowed to use the word again, even in a reasonably common phrase especially in political circles? Come on.
It’s okay. We understand. Your guy has never had a principle he hasn’t sold out for political reasons and he’s so ideologically bankrupt he’s now co-opted Obama’s platform (useta be for Experience and now he’s for Change). What an unintended testimonial to the power of Obama!
Meanwhile he’s got an inexperienced running mate who’s hiding out from the media ’cause they might ask her some hard questions! Yeah, she’s really ready to deal with foreign leaders, etc.
Can’t blame McCain – he’s old, this is his last chance to win what he obviously thinks is his due, and as his latest preposterous ads display, he doesn’t care how low he sinks or what lies he has to tell to do it.
Howeever, ideologues like yourself who lie until they’re blue in the face, toeing the party line no matter what it is, insisting up is down and vice versa – Ouch! How do you face yourself in the mirror every day?

  37. “Tim in Vermont @ 9:39, the only natural enemy of the hole is the pile.
Posted by: kelly at September 10, 2008 9:49 PM”
So, what are you sayin’? That Obama has piles? Does the MSM know about this?
    (You know, you can…um…ah.. put Preparation H ah… um-m-m, ah… on a pile, but it’s still ah, um, ah-h-h, er-r-r-r only a pile.)

  38. Obama went off-script and stuck his foot in a cow mine. Up to the hip so far, and still sinking. This guy has a habit of doing that, he forgets his lines or feels all brave and wants to get creative on a live mic, and out pops another BONE HEAD statement.
Yet here’s the Lefties, making like it isn’t THE biggest news line of the day, still, and what are we on here, day 3? And he’s issuing clarifications on the David frickin’ Letterman show?
Yep, that’s the guy going to lead the Lefties to the Worker’s Paradise. One of you Lefty brain trust members ought to send the guy an e-mail that says “STOP DIGGING!!!”

  39. Just now on CNN,Anderson Cooper stated while waiting Palin’s arrival and speech in Alaska: ‘She’s supposed to give a speech..her husband will introduce her,we’ll listen to a bit of her speech, likely the same one we’ve already heard over and over’Yeah Anderson, fair and balanced.

  40. RW – exactly. I agree with you. And now, Obama has affirmed that he actually DID MEAN what most of us understood him to say: that ‘lipstick’ meant Sarah Palin and that ‘pig’ referred to McCain or his policies’..
real- Nope; I meant ‘term’. ‘Term’ connotes a specific meaning, it’s a Sign. In this case ‘lipstick’ is a sign for Palin. It acquired this meaning when she used it in her speech.
Terms ‘grow’; they take on meaning with their use, and for Obama to use that particular term, one week after Palin’s famous use of it, meant that it referred to her.
Now, with reference to your anger that McCain has ‘taken’ Obama’s theme of change from him – no, he hasn’t. Obama’s theme of change is utopian; it has no specific identity. All it is, is a reference to the Messiah’s coming, which will Change all things. Change to what?
McCain’s change is Reform of the Washington government infrastructure and giving government back to the people. Government of the people by the people for the people. Obama is an elitist; such a thought would never occur to him.
The Democrats are a class-based party; there is the elite class who have the Right-To-Govern. This includes a certain type of feminist; that’s why they are so angry at Palin. She represents the ‘lower class’ and has no right, the Democrats feel, to ‘get uppity’ and think she has the Right To Govern.
And, there’s the lower class – called every name in the book by the Democrats. They are rural, blue collar, peasants..who run around having children and must be Governed by the Elites.
Oh – and no, I’m not lying. Nor am I an ‘idealogue’ (whatever that is). I’m a person. Period.

  41. Yeah, she’s really ready to deal with foreign leaders, etc.
Hey, real, do you think Clinton coming into the WH no less from Arkansas was up to speed on foreign affairs? Or how about Carter from Georgia? Both were a big issues then. Remember? Duh. As VP she Palin doesn’t have to deal with foreign leaders, that’s why we have a President and State Dept. VP’s reside over Congress. Duh, again.
Try educating yourself before you open your mouth.
Oh, and, do you have a link to any of your anecdotes. It helps, the verification burden, life’s hard. Make an effort.
