Watching live now as Obama waits for his intro at an event intended to be about education, arms crossed, looking irritated and tired. puts on a smile at the last moment.
He’s not taking responsibility for ill-chosen words, he’s firing back at the McCain campaign and the news media for a “manufactured controversy”. (Really? He didn’t notice the raucous laughter from his parisan audience when he said it?) Says that “enough is enough”. Cool. Which will ensure it remains high in the news cycle.
Good move, rookie.

  5. Well, the phrase ‘lipstick on a pig’ was also apparently used by McCain referring to Hillary Clinton’s re-introduction, this year during the Dem. Nomination Race, of her 1990’s health care plan. McCain said that her health care proposal was old..and even if you put ‘lipstick on a pig’..it’s still a pig. So, dressing it up, made no difference.
    HOWEVER, Obama’s reference yesterday to ‘lipstick on a pig’ can’t be tortuously twisted to refer ONLY to McCain – as the Democrats are now trying to claim.
    Their claim is that McCain’s aligning himself with Change (which Obama considers is his theme alone and no-one else has the right to change the govt)…is invalid. Obama is very worried that McCain has effectively snatched the theme of CHANGE, which has been the bedrock of Obama’s campaign..and is running away with it.
    Obama’s CHANGE has been ambiguous, amorphous. He hasn’t defined the change. He hasn’t defined what the future will be. Other than perfect because the Messiah has come.
    McCain, on the other hand, has snatched the theme and defined it as REFORM of Washington by stopping the inbred power cabals of Washington bureaucracy and cabals..and returning power to the people. The ordinary people.
    He has managed this by defining himself this way, and by the image of Sarah Palin who is a template of Power of the People.
    The Democrats are scared stiff. Their only idea is now not only no longer theirs, but it belongs to the Republicans..and has gained meat and flesh and bones…all of which were lacking when it was in the hands of the Democrats.
    So – Obama is trying to denigrate the idea of McCain and Change. BUT…using that lipstick metaphor isn’t a reference back to McCain’s use of it. That image has now ADDED meaning. Sarah Palin used it..and Obama and the Democrats can’t detach that new meaning from it. No matter what they say; they used it WITH THAT NEW MEANING. Purposely.
    The new meaning – is..Sarah Palin. A tough, fighting, representative of the people.
    Obama did indeed refer to Sarah Palin in his statement. His meaning was: You can add ‘lipstick’ to a ‘pig’ (McCain) but it won’t change anything.
    And ‘lipstick’ meant..a woman.
    Now, that was a blatant insult…

    Obama is using a schoolyard taunt to elicit a “he said”, “she said”, argument. The more juvenile a response he can get, the better. He is counting on his compliant media to plaster the “she said” far and wide, inviting his “McCain’s lack of serious issues” reaction while overlooking the “he said” that started it all.

    I kind of think he really did just toss that out there as an expression, just as many people have used it in the past. But even at that – given Palin’s speech it is an expression he probably would not have used in a scripted speech so it makes another great example of what happens when Barack tries to talk without a teleprompter in front of him.

  17. I’m a big Jimmy Stewart fan. There was a reference to this somewhere, but the movie “Mr Smith Goes to Washington” is being played out here, with Palin as Mr Smith. Everyone loves a good story, and Palin is it. The Democrats/media are attacking the star of that story. This makes them the out-of-touch, sexist, establishment party.

    The insult will backfire. It may be funny and witty but it looks like a vindictive response to the community organizer barb by Palin . But she was being sarcastic about his experience while he compared her to livestock. Probably not a great way to hold on to HRC backers or gain among middle class women.
    I doubt that the lipstick comment will phase Palin at all. After all, I am sure that taking on the good ole boys in Alaska earned her much harsher insults. If anything she will make a joke about it and by doing so she will look tough and Obama will look petty.

    Obama was referencing the alleged theft of ‘change’ … whether that change is for the better or not is debatable.
    McCain enhanced his maverick reputation with a maverick governor from Alaska and promoted it as change against the entrenched interests.
    Obama and his supporters have built up a pretty long record of being offended, calling their critics racist and defining many things as out-of-bounds.
    Obama’s lipstick on a pig comment was followed by silence, then wild applause by the audience.
    So, if fake charges of racism can be used as a defence against the non-existence of policy, so can fake charges of sexism against the non-existence of conformity to the Republican party line.

    This is somewhat similar to Peter MacKay’s “stick to your knitting” comment…though, if I recall correctly, Peter was responding during an ACTIVE conversation, not as part of a scripted response. Given the uproar that THAT caused, I’d say Obama should be treated just the same way.

    Clearly, Obama was talking about the GOP as a whole, trying to make the point that they are the same old party of Bush. Apart from the fact that they are not running against Bush, and that Palin appears to be signal a monumental and fundamental shift in US politics, this has been the strategy all along.
    On another point, are we not the ones who continually bemoan how political correctness is robbing our language of all meaning? How nobody can say what they mean for fear of offending some already offended soul? Why jump off that band wagon now?

    The problem with it is that, in context it came off sounding like a an ugly personal attack.
    Obama should just say he’s sorry he did not mean it that way it is unfortunate that there was a double entendre that he did not fully realize until it had slipped his lips ( and then not do it again) and Palin and MacCain should just say smile and say “apology accepted”.
    Lefties can believe their candidate is sincere, Righties will continue to believe not.
    But at least it is classily resolved.

  50. Well, I suppose it depends on the context in which it is said. For example, the phrase “clear as the nose on your face” is pretty innocuous. But, as my foreman found out at the company Christmas party, it can result in a punch if you say it too a large-nosed manager.
