To the satisfying roar of head explosions on the left;
The trouble is that – partly because of the surging commodity prices that have made all incumbent regimes unpopular – G8 is led by politicians who lack authority.
Nicolas Sarkozy, Angela Merkel and Gordon Brown are disliked at home; George Bush is a lame duck; Silvio Berlusconi is changing the law to indemnify himself; Dmitri Medvedev is regarded as Vladimir Putin’s creature and, in any case, Russia does not merit inclusion in the G8 by virtue either of its democratic structures or the size of its economy; Yasuo Fukuda, the host, has just become the first ever Japanese leader to have a censure vote passed against him in parliament.
Of all the leaders, only Stephen Harper – the talented but curiously neglected Canadian prime minister – is able to point to a popular and successful record in office.
Some will regard it as alarming that, in current times, world leadership should rest with Canada. But the Canadian Tories are a model of how to behave during a downturn.

the grass is always greener…………
Harper: yo’ the man!
Russia does not merit inclusion in the G8 by virtue either of its democratic structures or the size of its economy
I beg to differ as regards the size of its economy. Russia’s GDP, converted at purchasing power parity, was the sixth largest in the world, essentially equal to the UK’s and a bit larger than France’s. Russia’s government is despicable, but facts is facts.

Glad people saw this. Harper makes those of us who have backed him look good, and the people who are bailing on him look like idiots. He is, by far, the greatest prime minister in Canadian history.
*Canadian Tories are a model of how to behave during a downturn*
We may be facing a downturn economically, but North America is on the brink of a sociological about-turn. A few years ago the battle cry was “unite the right”. Now, the left is in disarray, if not self-destruct mode. Predictions: Canada-Conservative majority; USA-McCain.
Meanwhile — that would be the good folks at toronto’s star. “The toronto star accomplishes little these days. It continues to promote a failing agenda, fake polls, excess taxation and an ideology so far left it has hit the proverbial brick wall.” CRITICS SAY.
On a positive note, they are killing a lot less trees.
And yet, Yo-Steve! still can’t crack 35-36%.
Crack numbers are meaningful. If 40% don’t vote, and 35% vote for the sitting Prime Minister, what’s left for the others? Will Dion promise the 40% free crack pipes?
Of course, the fact that ANY media support for our Prime Minister must come from off shore clearly demonstrates a need for a mainstream conservative media outlet in this country. But with the antiquated media control structure in this country, it’s unlike to happen.
It’s also unlikely to happen.
“And yet, Yo-Steve! still can’t crack 35-36%.”
That’s because immigrants, homosexuals, and women, all of whom are brainwashed by the CBC to believe that the Conservative party is evil and for white males, comprise 65% of the population and are too racist and sexist and heterophobic to vote for a “proper” party and leader.
Proof? Dion introduces a fifteen billion dollar tax grab that everyone agrees will hit the poor and women hardest, and the polls didn’t budge an inch.
He could introduce a hundred kajillion dollar tax hike and it wouldn’t matter; Canadians vote according to race, gender, and sexual orientation, policy and taxes don’t matter in the slightest.
This bears repeating as we are unlikely to see this reported in any Canadian media:
“Of all the leaders, only Stephen Harper – the talented but curiously neglected Canadian prime minister – is able to point to a popular and successful record in office.
Some will regard it as alarming that, in current times, world leadership should rest with Canada. But the Canadian Tories are a model of how to behave during a downturn.
They have kept spending in check and reduced taxes. They are playing their full role in world affairs, notably in Afghanistan.
Rather than canting about saving the world (Mr Harper, in his quiet and courteous way, is a Kyoto-sceptic) they have addressed themselves to curing remediable ills and, above all, to putting their own affairs in order.
If the rest of the world had comported itself with similar modesty and prudence, we might not be in this mess.”
I note the Star now allows comments. Travers very public breakdown requires commentary.
Nice to see something a little positive once in a while …. but then the you know who start chirping…
Let them chirp. Read the comments at both the star and the other rag(G&M). The number of commenters that support Mr. Harper, doubt AGW and are revolted by the Liberal’s blatant tax grab (to name a few) are huge given the editorial policies of said rags.
Makes me think of Robert Borden
He could introduce a hundred kajillion dollar tax hike …
If 15 billion is going to make a difference to AGW, wouldn’t a hundred kajillion eliminate the problem completely?
Why not 20 billion, Dion? Or 25? Or 30? Why did you stop at 15 billion? Isn’t 35 billion more than twice as carbony as 15 billion? Isn’t that a good thing?
I myself do not do much T/V watching. My liberal spouse dragged herself away from the current CTV news to confirm- that we in Northern Ontario are blessed with at least two of these ladies.
I presume it is somewhat of a mockery of the President.
(Forgive off topic next).
Oh here we go again. Friendly genial urbane Lloyd Robertson informs us of an apology by President Bush re the Italian Prime Minister.
Journalism and it’s application. Those prissy girls, just a bunch of perennial adolescents. IMHO
The above comment meant for the previous thread. The CTV lady and her comment of GWB.
Silly me!
Why isn’t Australia part of the G8? (Making it G9).
They have a democratic gov’t, with a strong, industrial economy.
Australia is less than half the size of Canada in population and economy, thanks to the proximity of the US.
That aside I would like to see a new League of Democratic Nations spring up to counter the UN. Mainly Commonwealth countries with free elections and a free press. It would include at lest the G7 countries plus Australia, India and South Africa.
The Dana at 10:08 is the sarcastic one.
Bet all that praise for PMSH had old chrome-dome Boag’s sphincter pucker!!!
Squirm CBC squirm, and as you do you can watch what is left of the so called reporters at the Glob that wails and Toronto red star squirm with you when you have to read a piece like the UK paper wrote. Possibly some of you young reporters that are waiting in the wings at these dinosaur newspapers and news/skews, should take note and start to look for meaningful work, your lying ways are over thanks to the internet, no more polls that give you what you want instead of what you were told. Get out while you still can before you are canned. Leave the phoney stuff to the pros Travers Ibotsen and Diddler online.
I will judge Stephen Harper by his deeds, not politics or good photo ops. As my granny used to say: you can say a million words but one deed says it all. I want to see the HRC’s metaphorically ground up to dust, never to be resurrected. Than some compensation for the victims of this modern tool of suppression. Just like the inquisition with its 100’s of imitators. Modern or ancient, they still have the stink of corruption bathed in the swamp of slavery of all but the few chosen. Pick your reason, in the end they are all the same with the intent of absolute control at the expense of humanity, even of your very thought.
We will see how much backbone he has dealing with this Monster. If he kills them, I will be the first to eat crow. Meanwhile people are unjustly persecuted for there ideas.
While I might agree with some of the comments, anything emanating from a UK rag is suspect.
Gee, they told me if Bush was reelected he’d cancel the elections and remain in power. Now the complaint is that he is leaving office at the end of his term?
Well, we must complain about something. it is Bush after all.
Hey QE,
“And yet, Yo-Steve! still can’t crack 35-36%.”
You know what’s great about those numbers?
1)Liberal numbers are worse and will widen on election day because:
2)Conservatives end up with a significantly higher percentage of votes on election day than they poll and Liberals end up with a lower percentage of votes on election day than they poll, possibly because:
3)Conservative voters are motivated and liberal voters are not. Conservative voters show up on election day. Libs are loafing deadbeats who are lazy and want the gov to give them free s**t so are not the type of people to bother themselves with showing up to vote.
Endgame: you lose.
There just might be one other reason why the CPC is not polling well.
The trough wallowing, butt kissing, patronage appointment desiring media whores in this country.
The only poll that counts will be the one that comes the day that the libranos finally have the balls to bring down the government.
VOTE REFORM!
GO ARMY!
F@#$ THE LIBERAL MEDIA!
summom bonum: “Travers very public breakdown requires commentary.”
What public breakdown, pray tell? I’ve been away…
