    But seriously, this is without doubt the most interesting site, all due to the quality of postings by the Hostess, and the quality of the commenters.

    I must say that, on the one hand, I was rather surprised to find myself in the top 100 of posters here at SDA. I have considered myself more of a lurker here until somewhat recently, having been better known at the Shotgun. On the other hand, I suppose I have been posting here more frequently in consideration of the recent changes going on at the Shotgun – and your software has quantitatively identified my change.
    Now, I would like to ask you a question. I think I understand software and math enough to understand how you generated most of your table – most of it certainly would require at least a small amount of labour but would be considered technically trivial for someone such as yourself who writes software. The question centres around the times. You posted your table on Feb 4, yet your table states that it covers the time span until Feb 6. What algorithm did you use for the predictive part of the software? 🙂

    Oh man I just missed my A+ grade!
    But you know it is better to blog as a “Small Dead Animal” rather than to be one.
    Apparently I am not verbose enough, so I should take some lessons in saying something meaningful, but take a lot longer in getting there.
    There have been many who have tried making various family members become part of the “Roadkill Diaries”; so far all comers have been unsuccessful in this regard.
    But the reason Gordy Howe came from Saskatchewan was you could always count on the weather to freeze the horse manure enough to make a hockey puck for the frozen slough ice rink.
    Winter is not over all AGW fans so keep your stick on the ice and watch the elbows!

  12. There is an urgent need to quantify punditry and sombody is going to make a nice fortune by writing software that addresses this problem.
    I should be able to wave my cursor over the name of a pundit, blogger, or blog commentor and have a pop up window appear apprising me of the nature and value of this individual’s commentary.

    You need to learn from what you read at sda. Change your name to a more PC native designator, claim some land, and then open a casino. 😉

  21. Actually I picked the handle “Eskimo” and have been waiting to launch a phoney campaign of flinging racial slurs and unsustantiated generalities against those people represented by my namesake. Once I’ve collected enough “proof” that there are SDA contributors with racist tendancies to “agree with me”, I’ve instructed my realtor to start looking for something beachfront in Santo Domingo while the Alberta HRC considers my case.
    Failing this, the casino thing might work too…thanks for the tip.

    Now do the impossible (assumed impossible; you probably will figure a way) and tell us the geographic distribution of the commentors. There may be more from south of the border than even suspected.
    (That may be an interesting and illuminating thread to go with the occupation stats; geographic distribution of posters. Might be another reason why sda stands out so far above the norm.)

  25. Thanks for doing this Vitruvius. I was a bit surprised to find myself on the list as I was trying to cut down the amount of time I spent on SDA this year. Now what would be really nice would be to get this table in text format as I’m curious if plotting log(total_length) vs index number gives a straight line or not. I could write a program to extract the data from the html table but I don’t have that much time.

  32. Hey, you are the artist Kate. I am sure you can come up with some interesting stuff for t-shirts. Interesting looking at the stats. It seems that some of the best posters make them seem like they comment more than they do — Kathy Shaidle and Mississauga Matt come to mind, but I am sure everyone has favorites.     Now can you distinguish and single out for Kate’s readers the number of MSM / journalist visits?
    And Kate, how about a commentors poll of which entity is next for SDA to take down or discredit, the CBC, the HRC, Canadian Press, or Richard Warman the HRC big hitter or Taliban Jack.
    That would be really interesting.

  42. A T-Shirt!! Not much into them as an outer garment but now SweatShirts and hats, Really good quality sweatshirts are a good thing, now you’re talking.
    If it gets a few more people to check out SDA, the country is better for it. (And they all snickered, “Boy he takes this seriously.”)

It would appear that my original judgment when I called these statistics a shiny new thing yesterday ~ tinyurl.com/2ul9ve ~ was correct, as I’ve had almost 1,000 new visitors from Kate’s link so far today. Contrary to Kate’s humerous assertion, it didn’t take much time to write the program that produces these statistics, as I mentioned in the Reader Tips earlier today ~ tinyurl.com/2d9mef ~ I’ve probably only spent about six hours fiddling around with it. And let’s face it, man does not live off of reading Policy Review magazine alone 😉
    Brent ~ The Feb 4 date is the date the Blogspot page was created. I uploaded the Feb 6 data into the same page, thus the two dates. Yoop ~ I can’t do geography because I don’t have access to the IP addresses from the server logs. I’m just scraping the same data y’all can see when you View + Page Source.
    I should probably note that the Average Length column isn’t very interesting data, as someone who posts only two long posts gets in there, even if they don’t otherwise post. I think I’m going to toast that column in the next version and show the average and standard deviation in every row in the other two columns.
    Bluetech notes that there’s only about six weeks of data there. I could go back further, but who really cares what the stats were a year ago? We’ll see, maybe if I think of something cool to do with that data (like some colourful multiple-curve cartesian plots with at least one log axis 😉
    One of the interesting things I can do now that I have the scraped comments is make a page like the following, containing all my SDA comments, and those related to me, so far this year:

    What I’m probably going to do next is scrape all the threads I’ve ever commented in (I’ve kept bookmarks to them all), so I can then do a full-text search by commenter and content, for example, show me all the comments relating to Kate and Vitruvius that mention “pub” or “bouncer”. Now that would be a cool tool to make available, at least for those who aren’t trying to hide from their earlier comments 😉
    Kate ~ once I’ve had a little more time to clean up the program, I can send you a copy if you like, and if you have Perl or get it, you can automatically have the Top 100 report run at, say, midnight every day, and then provide a link on the main page.
    Suggestions are always welcome.
