Why this blog?
Until this moment I have been forced to listen while media and politicians alike have told me "what Canadians think". In all that time they never once asked.
This is just the voice of an ordinary Canadian yelling back at the radio -
"You don't speak for me."

I’m disgusted that the temperature sensor in the first photo is beside a gravel drive. Isn’t it supposed to be next to an ashpalt parking lot?
…Hi *scratch scratch*
My name is (fill in the blank)…and I’m rocket scientist as well as a USHCN global warming climatologist.
I put handkerchiefs on my head while standing with my wellingtons in pig crap up to my ankles and I…
-cue monty python big foot-
The USHCN Climatologists 2007 Annual Convention being held in historic London was a smashing success!
The leading historian organizers gathered together for a historic picture for this truly historic epic meeting of the historic predictors of future history.

Ive noticed that the temperature in my kitchen goes up when I have the oven on.
Kate: I know it is just a typo, but it is Marysville, not Maryland in California.
Regards,
John
Kate, note 2 – and I just noticed it or I would have mentioned it before – it is Orland, not Orlando.
Hmmm, one might think having the temp sensors in say a rural area might give more accurate readings…
But, Blackroc, if you buy into the conspiracy theory of the UN and enviro-wackos forcing the global warming craze, then they may not be interested in accurate readings.
The locations for these sites (where the temperature readings would be affected by manmade surroundings) are mind-boggling stupid! If they truly wanted to “fix” the temperature readings, why make it so obvious (unless they are OUTRAGEOUSLY stupid)…why not just fiddle with the accuracy of the guages themselves to report erroneous (higher) temperatures. They’re just setting themselves up for criticism with the location for these sites. Either way you look at it, whether these sites were selected innocently or with malice aforethought, this is a display of OUTRAGEOUS stupidity.
As a Gary Larsen “Far Side” cartoon had said “Yes, gentlemen, they are all idiots. But the question remains…what KIND of idiots are they?”
I, and many others have noticed, that when driving at a steady speed, even through small towns, the temp is always warmer than the countryside. (yes, when stopped the sensor recieves heat from the vehicle, but not while moving)
Is there a ‘surface station org’ in Canada ??
Dumb-Down the news.
Dumb-Down the climate.
Dumb-Down the Hollywood “documentaries”.
Dumb-Down University courses.
Dumb-Down the United Nations.
Dumb-Down the Oscars.
hmmm. The Media + Environment Canada + Hollywood + Universities + The UN + Oscars = Kyoto. The latte-crowd’s new math 🙂
Who da thought our weathermen and weatherwomen would be the target of a dumbing-down conspiracy !!??
Thanks John. Typos corrected.
Clearly, accurate temperature measurment at as may stations as possible are required to provide a basis for evaluation of gclimate change indicators.
Climatologists are still struggling to define and evaluate “average” global temperature.
We see numerous examples of inappropriately sited met stations and there are numerous sations worldwide whose data does not reach the main databases.
As a result, GW hype is driven by anecdotal evidence and not by instrumental evidence.
[ … why not just fiddle with the accuracy of the guages themselves to report erroneous (higher) temperatures.] Eeyore
Good point, but that could be proven to be tampering. The Kyoto Kult uses the ‘muddy-the-water’ method. Blame it on the labourer’s sloppy instalations —- easier to cover one’s ass. Same as Maurice Strong’s apparently never writing anything down.
Why did Gore and Suzuki hang their hat on the term ‘Man Made Global Warming’ ?? Because when one is telling fibs it is hard to cover all the bases right from the start. Hence, their changing it to ‘climate change’.
How does one find the wx sites in the Okanagan ??
The guys that conduct these are absolute idiots!
Who cares about the exhaust from a couple small window ACs placed 20 feet from a temp sensor!
Doesn’t anyone have a problem with the heat retaining brick building right next to it? How about the blocking of free flowing air? Geez, if they are going to criticize it at least get it right!
ron in kelowna, surface stations in Canada are government operated as they are in the States. However, our gov’t charges a fee for accessing data. We could set up a surfacestations.ca, wouldn’t be hard, though it would take lots of sleuthing. The next problem would be access to the station records to see if the trends have any discontinuities.
Altruistic: “The guys that conduct these are absolute idiots!”
That’s too harsh, there is a complete discusion of all the factors, including the brick wall. Since most people who have been following surfacestations.org, the brick wall is obvious.
The point is, that the station is badly situated.
Since you appear to be much more intelligent than Anthony Watts, maybe you could head up a Canadian version of surfacestations just to make sure that “idiots” are not in charge.
The very concept of trying to determine the earth’s temperature by averaging the readings from a collection of randomly located monitoring stations on the planet’s surface (at varying elevations no doubt) makes about as much sense as having your doctor determine your body temperature by taking a random sampling of skin surface temperature readings and averaging them out.
Kate, that link to the Surfacestations.org site is great, thanks! Lots of good data available and now graphics. Anyway, I thought it would be interesting to look at surrounding stations The closest one is a rural station at Willows (ID #, 425725910020). And, it looks “kind of” like Orland (more like Orland than Marysville).
But there are also urban stations as well. The largest population I found is at
Redding. Again it has a somewhat similar shape (much closer to Orland than Marysville). The interesting thing is that Redding was featured on this site before back on May 29. So we have a urban area with a poorly situated thermometer with an extra heat source near an airport and it is still similar to the rural ones.
Opps, forgot to add. To me the only unusual/interesting thing is the Marysville site. If you look at the surrounding areas neither urban or rural really look like it. So what is going on? Good question!!!
I wonder how long it will take the media to start to at least look at alternatives to the man made climate change theory. You would think that eventually there will be enough reasonable doubt to warrant a more thorough media investigation into this UN project.
Then again, maybe not. I suppose this is the result of journalists having university level writing ability but only elementary school analytical skills.
LynnH;
The media will switch to global cooling in a few years if temps keep trending downward. And they will not let on that global warming ever happened. Look back through their record, 1919 global cooling, 1935, global warming, 1975 global cooling. NYT made a comment that they were warning about global warming generations ago, while completely omitting that they were thumping the global cooling tub one generation ago.
The media won’t give up on this one until there’s another sure fire catastrophe to jump to. Too bad really, if the media would give up, maybe scientists would be able to get back to serious work instead of looking for the limelight.
PD on averaging the temps. That’s why one physicist noted that the global average temperature means as much to him as the global average telephone number. The North American average telephone number is 555-555-5555, and has risen from 0 in just 100 years. Top scientists at the UNIPTNC have a consensus that “There is definitely a correlation to the increase in average global temperature, but at this time we are unable to determine which is the forcing agent, the telephone or temperature. More funding is necessary before this important question can be answered.”
“If temperature is driving the trend we’re seeing in the average global telephone number, we may soon reach a world-wide shortage of telephone numbers which could seriously effect millions of teenagers. UNIPTNC – Summary for Policy Makers, 2007.
Vertical Convection air-flow next to buildings can certainly add *Drama* to data readings.

Microwave Process Converts Waste Materials into Oil and Gas
======
[This could solve the Tar sands / Water problem.]
=========
Global Resource Corporation (GRC) (OTC: GBRC.PK) claims that its HAWK 10 high-frequency microwave recycling process can recover oil and gases from oil shale, residual oil, drill cuttings, tar sands oil, contaminated dredge/sediments, tires and plastics with significantly greater yields and lower costs than are available utilizing existing known technologies.
The patent pending process process is claimed to be **the world’s first self- sufficient, environmentally friendly, fuel-generating recycler to reduce waste, cut emissions, and save energy by going green.**
In a July 2 press release GRC reported that the results of first round of tests on gasifying bituminous coal indicated that methane, other hydrocarbon gases, liquids in the diesel-heating range, and hydrogen could be extracted from the coal.
After processing, what was left behind were activated carbon and coke as a residue, all the products having real market value. A second round of testing has commenced to substantiate original results. If further testing confirms the results, GRC could very well be the first company to gasify coal without contributing a major greenhouse negative effect by not using oxygen in the gasification process.

I live outside of Saskatoon in the country, our temps are always at least 3 deg C below summer and winter when compared to anywhere in Saskatioon. That’s why wewe can’t grow plants that you can in Toon town.
Why are there not any temperature stations near me, why always near the Cement and Asphalt jungles of urban North America.
Also I understand that the temp stations in Siberia are not used anymore as since the break up of the FSU they don’t have the money to man them.. I’m told there’s several thousand stations that are not used anymore…seems to me that this would tilt the average temp to the warmer side when you ignore the staions located in the cold country that form the basis of pre 1990 temp readings…
Also I understand that the sun has not been considered as any influence by the IPCC deliberations as it wasn’t part of their mandate…
Seems a little bit odd that the most influential factor on our environment is disqualified by a bunch of Social scientists. Note that there is only 80 Bona fide Climatoligists in North America.. so what qualifications do the 2,500 scientists that the IPCC qoute as endorsing the IPCC’s views…
Fruitly, Goracle…. Give me break….
That’s like asking Fruitfly to comment on Particle Physics or the Goracle to comment on Cancer treatments.. They are Activists not Scientists…
I wonder how many eco-wackos have A/C in their fancy highrise office buildings?
spurwing, A conservative estimate would be, let’s see, take the sqaure root, divide by 7, um… all of them.
