    Happy Fair in Kabul
An extraordinary thing happened in Afghanistan last week. And the West failed to notice. The American and Afghan governments collaborated to create an agriculture trade fair in the capital city of Kabul. The two-day event was much like the annual fairs in many U.S. states. Except it was far more significant and significantly more important.
An estimated 50,000 visitors attended. Fully 30% were women, few of whom were covered by traditional veils. Thousands of families came. There was music. Loud and boisterous at times, and modern. Teens clapped wildly and tried to reach the stage. There was dancing and singing. A children’s circus performed, boys and girls together. Huge amounts of food and cold drinks were consumed. Ice cream was everywhere. Kids squealed with delight. Local TV and radio captured every minute. The spirit present had been unfelt for two generations. It was simply fun. Afghanistan was happy those two days. Somehow it became a joyous, national breakout party.
Business happened too. “We sold every piece of equipment we brought and made connections for additional work”, said one of 180 exhibitors. Potential investors found opportunities: “It was great for business in Afghanistan” observed one. Farmers from all over the country witnessed demonstrations of new and better practices and of modern equipment. One said of the fair “It is as if a blind man enters and gets his sight”. …-

Nicolas Ruszkowski to fix Stephane Dion’s image
Nicolas Ruszkowski is taking on the challenge of rehabilitating Stephane Dion’s image. It tells you something about Stephane Dion’s problems when you go to someone like Ruszkowski.
Nicolas Ruszkowski is a well-known figure when somebody needs their image fixed up. Prior to taking on the job of making Stephane Dion look good, he was helping other folks with their battered images. And when I say “prior to”, I mean he was doing it last Friday.
You see, Ruszkowski is a vice-president at Fleishman-Hillard Canada Inc, image consultants. As such, he had a lot of high-powered clients with very serious image problems.
As of this past Friday, May 7, Ruszkowski was lobbying on behalf of Royal Lepage Relocation Services, and the government agencies he lobbied included National Defence, Public Works and Government Services Canada, Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and the Treasury Board of Canada.
Why these agencies? Well, in November 2006, the Auditor General reported on problems in which the Liberal government awarded the 2004 contract to handle government employee relocations to Royal Lepage: …-

David Frum | Why Suicide Bombers Crave “Martyrdom”
Leor Halevi, professor of history at Texas A&M and author of the definitive account of Islamic death rituals, explains the terrifying Muslim theology of death – a harrowing vision of one’s personal future from which “martyrdom” offers an avenue of escape.
According to Islamic doctrine, between the moment of death and the burial ceremony, the spirit of a deceased Muslim takes a quick journey to Heaven and Hell, where it beholds visions of the bliss and torture awaiting humanity at the end of days.
By the time corpse handlers are ready to wash the body, the spirit returns to earth to observe the preparations for burial and to accompany the procession toward the cemetery. But then, before earth is piled upon the freshly dug grave, an unusual reunion takes place: The spirit returns to dwell within the body. …-

  6. Not exactly a link or anything, but rathe just a thought.
Is it getting harder to win local-level elections nowadays? With satellite television, I never watch the local amateurs wax poetic about local issues anymore. With the internet, I now rarely read the paper, unless I ate too much cheese the night before and am in for a long sit-down.
How do local politicians get traction? Right now, I’m in Manitoba watching an NDP government run on its record. A record that involves watching the rest of Canada pull away from us in almost every positive indicator out there. Yet, the provincial Tories only make the news for promising the ridiculous — the return of the Jets.
Maybe I’m coming at this the wrong way, because the Tories are running a horrible campaign, and I thank gawd my call to help hasn’t been returned by the local candidate. I’d be embarrassed to stump on what we’ve heard so far. But I still wonder if people are so disconnected from local politics now that incumbents can stay low and ride the apathy.

  9. Does anyone know what is happening vis a vis the Parliamentary Press Gallery boycott of the Prime Minister? I am aware that some agencies have dropped their original refusal to cover the Prime Minister (CTV had an informative interview a couple of months ago with S.H., but I believe that others may still be boycotting. What I particularly want to know is what is the position of the CBC on this. As an agency funded by the taxpayers of Canada, I believe it is incumbent on them to provide thorough coverage of the Prime Minister. From my perspective they do not have the luxury of boycotting (if they still are). To do so is to do a disservice to all Canadians. There are occasional polls indicating that many Canadians still do not feel they know Prime Minister Harper. Surely the CBC . . . so quick to inform us about its pet issues, such as global warming . . . is at least partially to blame. If they are still involved in a boycott, I think it should cease immediately. Maybe I am just uninformed about this. I have lost track of the issue.

  10. with regard to the oath of citizenship, which is to the Queen, her place of residency is irrelevant. Constitutionally, she is the Queen of Canada. That ends that.
If Canadians want an oath of citizenship to the nation rather than the head of the nation, that’s an issue to be taken up with the population, and would require a constitutional revision.

Real Story Behind Arrest of Environment Canada Staffer
Let’s take a look at a few of the comments and quotes presented by columnists Mike De Souza and Andrew Mayeda of the Ottawa Citizen, in an article entitled “Tories Defend Arrest in Leak Case.” The article (see also jacksnewswatch post on this topic) is not an oped piece so the criteria for fisking are the verifiable facts and the “way” those facts are presented. The sub-title of the article gives the reader a clear idea of how the facts are going to be presented: “Handcuffed worker object of witch-hunt, climate critic claims.” So, we know immediately that environmentalists are going to be involved in this story.
To begin with De Souza and Mayeda write: “The Harper government denied it was trying to intimidate whistle-blowers in the public service after the RCMP arrested an Environment Canada employee and escorted him out of his office in handcuffs in connection with a leak of the government’s secret plan to improve air quality and fight climate change.”
First of all, there is a big difference between a whistle-blower and one who leaks confidential information. Why are the media using the term whistle-blower? While all federal government employees must sign a code of ethics, some staffers must sign also sign a “confidentiality” agreement. When a staffer signs either type of agreement, they are legal documents. So, no staffer should be surprised when they find there are consequences to violating their agreement.
Whistle-blowing has absolutely nothing to do with breaking the federal code of ethics and leaking (to the media) “a draft version of the government’s new regulatory framework to crack down on pollution from large industries.” That is providing a heads up regarding government policy — a heads up to anti-government environmental groups.
How do I come to that conclusion? Just listen to who De Souza and Mayeda quote in their article. …-

  19. Scandal? I’ve heard it before
    By ALLAN CUTLER
Have you ever experienced deja vu — that feeling of having been there before or that a new situation has already been experienced?
Due to my involvement in the sponsorship scandal, I have become known as The Whistleblower. After much consideration and persuasion by others, I am writing a book, from my perspective, on the sponsorship scandal — the largest political scandal in Canadian history.
Suddenly, there is news about a new government scandal involving money granted without appropriate oversight. Deja vu strikes. Am I am hearing correctly or am I having a flashback? Did they really say a Liberal scandal? I keep listening. They are talking about an Ontario Liberal scandal, not the federal sponsorship scandal. Deja vu remains. There are now two scandals, and key elements seem eerily similar. …-

McGuinty said he didn’t understand the opposition parties’ “perverse delight” in accusing themselves of something that he hasn’t said.
Last month, McGuinty was forced to issue a late-night statement admitting he should have said “No” when asked if the opposition parties were racist instead of ducking the question.”

Allan Cutler gets déjà vu over Ontario / McGuinty Scandal$
    ottawasun.com/Comment/2007/05/10/4167865-sun.html
Deja vu strikes again when I hear that the Liberal government is accused of handing out grants to groups with close Liberal ties. Did I not hear the same accusations raised during the federal scandal? And it strikes once again when accusations are made of a slush fund to reward supporters of the Liberal party. Are they “entitled to their entitlements”?
Listening closely, I realized that there were also significant differences. These differences make me even more worried about the provincial situation. The differences indicate that the provincial Liberals are more worried about truth coming out into the open than the federal government was.
Unlike the federal government, Premier Dalton McGuinty is reported as acknowledging that he knew that there was no formal application process. Former Prime Minister Paul Martin was very clear that he was not involved and did not know what was happening.
Unlike the federal government, the McGuinty Liberal government has blocked attempts to have the grants reviewed by the provincial auditor.
The federal scandal was triggered by the auditor general’s report. Paul Martin, to his credit, also established the Gomery commission.
As The Whistleblower, I believe strongly in ethical values. Truth, openness and accountability are important. It is in the interest of all Ontario taxpayers to find out the truth. ** Allan Cutler [ Ethics ]
