Notwithstanding how creeped out I feel about this news, I take great exception to that comment.
This child is in no way responsible for anything done by his or her mother, and has as much right as anyone else to make of life what he or she can.
That we doubt that Karla is fit to raise this child is a good argument for keeping her in jail for the rest of her life so she could not become pregnant.
But the child is here. The child is blameless, and has a right to his or her life.
Pardon me for the rant, but the comment touched a nerve.

I was about to say too bad they didn’t sterilize her in jail, but given our insane justice system, I’m surprised she and her lover weren’t permitted to start a little family in jail. Beauty parlors, pizza pajama parties, tattoos…
I feel sorry for her victims families.

There are allegations that Paul Bernardo was already a sexual predator when he met Karla. Are there even any rumours that Karla was ‘bent’ before Paul?
Understand that I’m not saying she was just some blameless victim; but what I am suggesting is that had she not connected with Bernardo, what is the chance that she would have confined her deviance to fantasy? And if that’s a possibility, then is it also possible that she’s been rehabilitated? (because she was at one time habilitated)

In answer to your question, yes probably.
I lived in the same community before, during and after these heinous crimes took place. Contrary to what the population figure might indicate, it is a small community and a great many people there knew her (my daughter included). The general feeling amongst those that knew her ( again my daughter included ) were not surprised that she was involved. She was known to be a little “weird” and self-possessed, if not downright Possessed.
If I had to choose one word to describe how others viewed her, it would be “amoral”.
She may not have degenerated to the stage she did without Bernardo’s influence but, lets just say
you wouldn’t have wanted her as your babysitter.

Personally, I believe that the punishment should fit the crime. Bernardo should have been sexually assaulted, tortured and then killed…Homolka, too, though perhaps not killed.
But that is not how the legal system is set up in Canada. Being “progressive”, we slap them on the wrist and then let them go…asking “please don’t do that again or I’ll have to slap your wrist again”.
Recognizing that “an eye for an eye” is likely too barbaric to be acceptable, we have decreed that once the jail time has been served, criminals are free to live their lives within society. Since this is the law of the land, we should let Homolka live her life. If you can’t let her live her life, then form a vigilante group and deal with her.
I say leave her alone.
