11000 football fields sounds way worse than 20 square miles. just like oil spills are reported in liters. the icefloats just like it was before so no danger of the ocean overflowing. Archimedes had it figured out 3000 years ago, the MSM hasnt got it figured yet. just for comparison the area of Calgary is 300 square miles.the area of Red Deer Alberta 25 square miles or 14000 football fields. http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/story/CTVNews/20061228/ice_shelf_061228/20061228?hub=TopStories

In early February 2001, Blake and his crew
took a satellite phone out on an iceberg
at the King George VI Ice Shelf in the Antarctic Peninsula,
a place WHERE NO BOAT HAD BEEN BEFORE,
and called government ministers at the United Nations Environment Program’s (UNEP) office in Nairobi, Kenya, which is a supporter of blakexpeditions.}
Blake reported that he had
JUST SAILED ONE HUNDRED MILES (161 kilometers)
THROUGH OPEN WATERS
in a region usually covered with ice.
Klaus Topfer, executive director of the UNEP program, applauded the report as anecdotal evidence in line with predictions of sea ice retreat as a result of global warming.
Projected warming is likely to break up ice shelves further south on the Antarctic Peninsula, exposing more bare ground and triggering biological changes on land and sea.
That was approx SIX YEARS AGO..

how many 11,000 football fields can you fit in rhode island, ’cause dat’s da size o da iceberg whut cracked off some 10 + years ago and drifted past new zealand. melting as it went and raising the ocean level 0.00001 cms. but whose counting?

head in the sand, head in the sand. which there is going to be lots more of with the continued desertification of africa and the baring of still more presently ice covered areas all around the world.

Cal2,
Did you notice the age of the ice of the 11000 football fields…..3,000 years….so what was there 3,001 years ago? Well if the ice build up took 3000 years then one would imagine there was nothing but land there 3001 years ago….perhaps that is the last time this happened? or perhaps it was a lot longer ago…..maybe they should go stufy the ice and study the land underneath it.
As for Bollocks, ulm….yeah the Andes rocks have seen sunshine before…..and there is more sea ice cover in the antarctic and arctic this year compared to last.
Yes there are variations around a tend up and down. All that MIGHT tell you is that the earth is getting warmer, which is a trend from about 10,000 years ago. It says nothing about why.
Today some newscaster said that this has been the warmest winter on record. He said temps were an average of 4 degrees higher than normal. So, while we suffered 26 below zero F. I am so happy it was not 30 degrees below zero. Spent the day setting up my new computer, transferring files, installing programs etc. But, we have a problem, the speakers don’t work. Something about the sound card. Can’t find an 800 number for ACER, but went to the site, and it seems we have a code 10 problem. Anyone know how to fix it.

ITV’s new prime-time shockerama, “Extinct” (Saturday 9th December, 7.30pm) was truly appalling. We were treated to an hour of dumbed-down seat-of-the-pants celebrity flummery, hosted by those two eminent scientific authorities Sir Trevor McDonald and Zoe Ball, in front of a happy-clappy studio audience who clearly didn’t care whether they were watching “Deal or No Deal”, “Come Dancing” or a programme about lancing boils, so long as they could whoop and cheer at every opportunity. The sound-track of plastic-rock-by-the-metre was all-pervasive as the almost inarticulate Anneke Rice flew in a helicopter (“Incredible!”) over a snow-bound Arctic landscape (“Incredible!”) in pursuit of several polar bears (“Incredible!”) who were scared out of their wits until they were shot down with tranquilliser darts (“Incredible!”) and had damn great radio collars put on them – all for their own good, of course. They might be “the largest carnivorous animals on the planet” (so where does that leave killer whales, then? They’re bloody fish, are they?), weighing as much as 12 men, able to run at 25mph and allegedly capable of man-eating, but one actually found oneself feeling sorry for the poor buggers. You’d think they’d done enough to avoid being messed around by tree-huggers, wouldn’t you, living at the very end of the earth in temperatures down to minus 40 degrees and surrounded by nothing but ice?
The format of the programme is simple. It’s just like “Big Brother”, “Celebrity Come Dancing” or “I’m a Celebrity, get me out of here!” but with animals. And celebrities.
Each week a celebrity has to champion an animal that’s supposedly about to become extinct in a sort of balloon debate. The viewers can vote on which animal wins £1 million, which will probably be spent chasing it with helicopters. I expect they love it really. It’s like a game to them.

I suspect that most of the tree huggers and envirowackos believe in Darwins theory, survival of the fittest. So, when some species is supposedly in danger, doesn’t that say they are not the fittest and should be gone. Also, the theory of evolution, doesn’t that mean one species evolves into another. Bullocks, since you’re the ‘new lefty,’ I suggest you take a big breath and go back and read ‘We wonder if we’ve oversold the science’ as well as the comments. You might just come up to speed on the whole discussion and add something to it, that is if your plebeian brain will allow it.
And please refrain from your juvenile antics of “I win” or “I win again.” You are only losing, worse than you can possibly imagine.
It broke off 18 months ago and he gets paid federal grants of $240000/year to observe such things. In here lies the problem, and within the problem lie the lies.
the story this morning is the ice cap is melting therefore the polar bears are endangered, but since the polar bears are endangered the Inuit cant sell the hunting rights to the yanks so they dont want them to be called endangered. sounds like more research grants coming.round and round it goes.

how can you not understand what Archimedes figured out in around 200BC.
Ice displaces exactly its mass of water, not its volume.

Librano$ are being kicked out; kick ’em some more, and faster.
Bullocks, since you’re the ‘new lefty,’ I suggest you take a big breath and go back and read ‘We wonder if we’ve oversold the science’ as well as the comments. You might just come up to speed on the whole discussion and add something to it, that is if your plebeian brain will allow it.

May all of you find peace and happiness through His

“yo, daisy, you mis-spelled plebian.” – bollocks
Plebeian: A coarse or uneducated person.
You are a lost cause.
the ice shelf sits on top of the water, then when it snaps off, wanders away and melts, ALL of it goes into the ocean INCLUDING the ice that was *previously* held above the water level by the floating action.
