Mr. Mark Holland (Ajax—Pickering, Lib.): … Today in committee the commissioner confirmed that he had to get permission from the minister before he could testify, that the commissioner needed the minister’s approval before he could “give evidence or speak”. However, on September 28 the minister denied any such involvement and any such interference.
Now we learn the minister was a gatekeeper. He chose what information could and could not be released. Why?
Hon. Stockwell Day (Minister of Public Safety, CPC): Mr. Speaker, I watched the member opposite in committee for a few minutes this morning. He posed that exact question and the question was answered very clearly. I had no involvement in terms of any instruction whatsoever to the commissioner. Right after that was said, the member acted as if nothing had been presented. I would suggest that he abandon his Perry Mason on steroids routine and just stick to the truth.
Update Read the comments, too. Apparently, Holland attempted to mislead Day during his appearance before the committee.
Zaccardelli resigns.

This Holland fellow reminds me of Boudria, Copps, and Tobin the Liberal “rat pack” of years ago.
It will be intersting to see who will clip the twits’ wings.
Stockwell Day gave him a good shot yesterday in QP.
Mark Holland = “Perry Mason on steroids”
Gotta like it!
cbc did a behind the scenes at Lib conv, and this “tough guy” Holland was CRYING when his guy Kennedy moved to Dion! Maybe Stock can make him cry in QP! I cannot stand Holland, and his arrogance, typical in a Lib.tho
Was Zaccardellis waffling story because he was jammed up trying to serve two masters?
If so, who would you believe a career cop or a Liberal Minister?
Ummm, Mark, didn’t all this Maher Arar stuff happen while under YOUR government’s watch? He seems to conveniently forget that. And why has no former liberal minister (to my knowledge) been taken to task for this one?
Can’t remember where I saw it last eve,but someone made comment that if Landslide Annie were still minister, she should have been fired along with Zac.
The first time Zacardelli testified infront of this committee Holland tried the same thing. He asked Zacardelli if he was being muzzled by Stockwell Day, a charge flatly denied by Zacardelli. Then, when Day came before the comittee to testify he quickly informed him that Zacardelli had just testified that he was being muzzled by Day (a lie). Unbeknownst to Holland Day had been watching the live feed of Zacardelli’s testimony and called him on the lie.
Just like a Liberal not to let the truth get in the way of a good arguement.
“Stock-it-to-’em”!!!
Iggy in QP; (paraphrasing) “It has become customary for this Government when backed into a tight corner to blame everything on the previous administration. When is this Government going to quit blaming and take responsibility?”
Arrrgh!
Stock’s giving it back as good as he’s getting it.
What a great day for fundamentalists, Commissioner of the R.C.M.P. resigns, George Bush in difficulty in the U.S. I suppose the opposition parties in both countries and in the C.B.C. are as happy as the fundamentalist are.
skip – I admit; you’ve totally confused me. What does Zacardelli’s resignation have to do with fundamentalism? What difficulties in particular, in the USA? And what do they have to do with fundamentalism? What do you mean by ‘happy opposition parties’..and the CBC. I admit; I haven’t understood a word of your post.
Zaccardellis’s…. resignation was inevitable.
The commission was set up to find a fallguy for the Arrar affair and he was the ONLY vulnerable target of an note.
never mind the FACT that ARRAR was sent to Syria because the US intelligence and security people were completely panicked and for no other reason.
These self righteous POS’s who have been pushing this useless committee don’t give a crap about facts because they are out for one thing only and that is political blood.
What a bunch of losers!
Have listened to some of the coverage on this issue…. this Holland guy is kind of a “piece of work”. He is pushing very, VERY hard to fabricate the fiction that Day gave instruction to Zach on this testimony. Holland’s got to be a lawyer because of how he poses his attack questions and his ability to mischieviously misrepresent a situation. And you have to really listen to him to catch him doing it……he’s good at it! And not afraid to go for the big lie, either.
It really is sad that Zacardelli was left with nothing else to do but resign. No doubt a nightmare for members of the force and for Canada at large.
Pit Bull Holland could have done his committee work with class but went just the opposite in his attempts to destroy a man who has given 35 years of service to Canada. This frothing-at-the mouth/wet-behind-the-ears virtual non-contributor by comparison is alienating most everybody he comes in contact with.
This whole mess happened on the Liberals watch and there are a whole lot of senior people who should be out the door with him – in the RCMP, CSIS, the watchdogs of CSIS/RCMP, and in Foreign Affairs. To think that Anne Mac’s hands are clean is both a joke and an insult to Canadian intelligence.
That the military has been reduced to a shadow of itself over 35-40 years under the Liberals has been more than apparent to the public.
With the RCMP hiring policies, transfer policies, and promotion policies of firstly aboriginals, women, visible minorities (and always with the mandatory francophone component) – the same has happened within the RCMP as has happened with the military. However, it has been much less apparent to the public and we have been seeing the consequences for a while now.
Policy generally comes from the top down but in this case, cleaning house has to begin from the top down with competence being the criterion. Members of the Force deserve much better than what they have been having to tolerate from the upper levels.
As someone who knows Mark Holland, I can tell you that he is one of the best MPs in this country today, and is a genuine and class act. It really does sicken me to read these comments about him.
This bit of gibberish would be brought to by a pretender, and not the real Skip. I spew gibberish sometimes, but its more creative than that.

Ask yourself “Is the statement that Holland lied and attempted to manipulate both Zaccardelli and Day true or not true?”
Since it’s a matter of public record ( you can get the transcripts ) that should not be too hard to determine.
True or Not True ?

Ya sure buddy, he’s on tape and on paper telling blatant lies. Give him a few more years under the Libs and he will probably be a good thief too.
If you think a blatant liar is a great role model you will definitely fit in well with the Liberals.
Zac’s prevarications before the Committee were a gift from God. That Liberal fart catcher totally politicized the upper levels of the force during the Chretien years. The government couldn’t possibly have gotten rid of him if he hadn’t commited political Hari-Kari. And Holland, being the new kid eager to make a name for himself, didn’t even realize that Zac was on his team. Thanks for the help, Mark.
Kudos to S. Day for his testimony in front of “the committee” today (Thurs.) The interchange between himself and both Holland & Alghreba (sp) was priceless and a must see for those who missed it. CBC Newsnet. Day was open, sincere, and hopefully the whole mess is not allowed to pass simply with one resignation.
Holland was at it again and will again bring up questions in the House. Doesn’t he realize the leadership is over and Dion won. Is he working to get his name out there for the next one. How can he keep such a straight face when he speaks all the lies. Keep it up man and you may bring down several top liberals (JC, PM, SD) while trying to bring down Harper. Now that Zac is out, he can spill all the truth about adscam, trust fund investigation, and other botched investigations. After all, if Zac botched ARAR, is that not proof he botched anything doing with JC and the liberals. How could he be credible in one and not the other, or vice versa. Keep it up Holland. He sure does look serious (and phony) when questioning Day, but Day gave back just as good.
Wonder if Holland would have been so determined if he had questioned JC or others at the Gomery inquiry. Maybe PMPM would not have been given a free ride. When will he ask Dion what he knew and when he knew it about adscam and other wrong doings by the liberals. I wonder if he realizes he may have done more harm to the liberals, because he probably thought Zac was a conservative appointment, not a liberal lap dog.
Research what was said about him when he was appointment. O’Connor could put all the dots together because all the info was there. Zac and others acted on the facts as they happened, not on what might happen. Still think the only truth Arar told was to the Syrians when he confessed. And, what did the US know that we still don’t know. Remember JCs interferrance with Khdar and we know how that turned out. And, one must remember when he was deported, as a muslim, he was stupid to land in the US so shortly after 9/11.
Ottawa Sun | Greg Weston::A legacy of manure
As [ex] RCMP Commissioner Giuliano Zaccardelli rides off into the sunset with a bullet in his career and a six-figure pension in his pocket, the real wonder is not that Zac was sacked, but how the head Horseman managed to stay in the saddle this long.
One day after Zaccardelli vowed not to quit the force, Stephen Harper announced the commissioner had resigned — in the best interests of the RCMP. He got that right. Rarely has any federal institution been dragged through more muck and manure than the national police force during Zaccardelli’s six years as top cop.
…-
You know who plumped Zac into the saddle, boots and all. Martin? Gagliano?
It’s a tough question; but, here is the answer:
Prime Minister Announces New Commissioner of the RCMP
Prime Minister Jean Chrétien, [Librano$]
today announced the appointment of Deputy Commissioner
Giuliano Zaccardelli as the new Commissioner of the Royal Canadian …-

Ajax, Just saw your hero and personal friend on TV getting a smackdown layed on him by Stockwell Day. Wooohoooo! You must be so proud of this guy. This little weasel (he has to be a lawyer) thought he could bully and scare Stock into giving him an answer. Stock held firm and sent the little fella back to his momma with his tail between his legs.
And in honor of the lefties commenting on Rona’s hair…It looks like Holland combed his hair with a brick.
If these are the type of people that we feel should be running this country we are in deep doo doo.
Lets see who gets the replacement appointment that is supposed to be coming out shortly.
By the time it is filtered through Official Bilingualism, Official Multiculturalism, patronage, party loyalty, the other screening devices touched on before, P.Q. considerations, etc., lets see if it is same old, same old, or if in fact competence might be the prime requirement.
Here’s hoping that the new commisioner is some hard ass right wing old school cop. Perhaps in the vein of a Dirty Harry? Any suggestions off the top of anyones’ head?
Why do the Liberals let Holland speak? He just keeps getting burned by Stockwell Day and looks like a fool.
Why do the Liberals let Holland speak? I’m watching him on QP. He just keeps getting burned by Stockwell Day and looks like a fool. When do we get to see man on the street interviews of the people that vote for these clowns??
Now that (albeit Lieberal-appointed) heads are actually rolling over the whole “Arar matter”, it seems to me an appropriate time to ask: At any time during his hundreds of press conferences/interviews/testimonies has Arar ever actually renounced al qaeda and islamacist terrorism? IIRC, the issue isn’t that Arar had absolutely no links to suspected Cdn al quaeda members – he indisputably did – it’s that the RCMP overstated the extent and significance of these links to the US security forces, who have consistently said they had their own intelligence on Arar and, therefore, weren’t particularly swayed by what the RCMP told them anyway.
Antoher question: If Arar takes some of the millions we Cdn taxpayers are about to bestow upon him for his bad fortune of having been born a Syrian and funnels it to some of his former associates, will the feds be guilty of their own terrorist financing legislation?
Apparently there are 7 deputy commissioners in Canada. Busson (female) now in the Pacific Region…. hmmm… if I were a betting person I would probably go here.
Good question Great Walls of Fire. This is all too much of a spiders web and it smells bad. Why is Arar ‘entitled’ to $$ when Mr. Samson is not? Definitely a thing that makes you go hummm?
I agree with you Joe M. – Mr. Day’s personification was apt – Perry Mason on Steroids – I laughed out loud.
