Brought to you by the team at Small Dead Animals – “where there are more daily readers than Liberals have delegates!”
We begin our broadcast with a friendly shout out to the Mole – still providing endless entertainment for conservatives!

Now to formal coverage of the Liberal leadership convention. First, the results of our poll…

|
![]() |
In local leadership news, Saskatchewan MP and former finance minister “Weathervane Ralph” has hitched his wagon to Bob Rae. Mr. Rae’s primary political achievement to date was to plunge the province of Ontario into massive debt during a single term stint as an NDP premier.
Which raises an obvious comparison (and a question I’d like our Liberal and NDP readers to ponder)…
How is favouring Bob Rae to become the next leader of the Liberal Party of Canada differ substantively from an endorsement of former Saskatchewan premier Grant Devine for the office of Prime MInister?
(Open thread.)

And a new poll for Global news shows that it really doesn’t matter who they vote in because SH and the CPC would still win – by 8-10% points over any of the top 4!!
Now Joe Volpe could be a problem (hee hee) – Go Joe!!
Buzz is there. CAW…CAW…
November 30, 2006 – Wow, what a rally! Michael Ignatieff and supporters dressed in different coloured Iggy t-shirts totalled close to 2000 for a huge show of support this afternoon.
In terms of buzz,
this has been one of the biggest events of the convention.
TDH
Heh. Watching some of the coverage at the moment, there appears to be some kind of stripper as part of the tribute to PM Dithers…in light of the Judy Sgro “Strippergate” scandal, the format seems most appropriate…
5 years of Bob Rae did to us in Ontario what the NEP did to Alberta.
He turned a mild US recession of 10 months into a 5 year disaster. People couldn’t find work, hundreds of thousands lost their jobs or were in constant fear of doing so, and my entire family remembers the difficulty of even putting food on the table back then…
Bob Rae is the end of civilization as we know it.
We must never forget.
Did “the New Generation of Liberals” adopt Policy #45?
Just wondering.
Policy no. 45 reads: “WHEREAS the current law discriminates against unmarried same-se* couples by not permitting unmarried persons under 18 to legally engage in consensual ana1 intercourse; BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Liberal Party of Canada urge the Federal Government of Canada to bring the age of consent for ana1 intercourse in equal pairing with other forms of sexual activity.”
The age of sexual consent for heterosexual intercourse in Canada is 14.
I would dearly love for Rae to win – he would be so much chum for SH and the CP.
Iggy’s got it though barring some major faux pas in his speech. The CP just has to stand far enough away when he detonates and takes much of the LP with him.
Me, I’m cheering Bob Rae on as I owe him a significant debt of thanks. Back when he was Premier of Ontario and based on the crap he put us through, I chose to move to Alberta.
Best thing I ever did, and I don’t think I was an isolated case.
Heh. I was in New Delhi, India, on a business trip, working out of the Canadian High Commission the day of the Ontario election in 1989…a staffer came running down the hallway, almost like “chicken little”, loudly announcing that Bob Rae and the NDP had just taken the election in Ontario.
I was with about 12 people at the time, we all looked at each other in complete astonishment.
Then I returned to Ontario and experienced the utter incompetence of Bob Rae. His most famous quote, as I recall “we are going to spend our way out of this recession”….
Yup…that worked….NOT!!!
GO RAE!!!!
His ascension to the leadership of the Libs should guarantee a CPC majority…unless the populace of Canada are complete morons
*starts to research immigration policies of Australia*
Does anyone else think the kid behind the clapping man in the “new generation” picture looks like a young Scott Reid? Could that be the son that’s spending all of his money on popcorn and beer?
I love that dude…

Old-style leadership race lives on; Liberals reject one-member, one-vote
“The vote marked a repudiation of sorts for MP Belinda Stronach.
Stronach, a Conservative leadership candidate in 2004, declined to run in the Liberal race, saying she was committed instead to reforming her new party’s leadership process. She reportedly spent hundreds of dollars out of her own pocket this week paying for flyers to promote the one-member, one-vote initiative.
“You know what, we’re missing 98 per cent of the family here today,” Stronach implored delegates, speaking from one of the floor microphones at the Palais des congres.
“Don’t be afraid. Be open. Let’s modernize this party. Let’s leapfrog
ahead of the Conservative party
so we can engage,
we can earn the trust
and respect of Canadians,
we can become the most open and democratic party
in the world.” cnews

Bruce, Australia has tough immigration rules and a lot of hoops to jump through, especially if you want to retire there. Although, the fact that they will not allow anyone in with a criminal record or associated with criminal activity to immigrate does ensure there will not be any Canadian Lieberals there. Even ex-cons have limits.
Re: the young man with the glazed, drugged look on his face. This may be the real story.
1:00 PM – Wondered out loud if any of the options for leader could run the country without screwing up worse than Paul Martin did.
2:00 PM – After word about this anti-liberal thought getting around, the executive sets up a test which he promptly fails(He turned down the brown envelope full of cash).
3:00 PM – Armed security escorts him to the basement thought control department.
5:00 PM – After 2 hours of electoshock therapy, a 40 point drop in IQ, and removal of all original thought, the executive deems the young man again ready to be a liberal delegate.
5:30 PM – photo op with Paul Martin
Seeing the inanely grinning face of Paul Martin in your photo brings back unhappy memories. It also leads one to reflect that the Liberals have been better off with NO leader than with either Paul Martin or Jean Chretien.
Paul Martin doesn’t smell – I’ve shaken hands with him and didn’t need disinfectant afterward – but he exudes a palpable atmosphere of corruption and decay. His presence at the Liberal Convention will remind us all forcibly of why we didn’t vote Liberal and aren’t likely to do so in the near future.
Bruce,
Rae is a very slick politician and he never gets nailed on anything he does wrong. He’s proof that an idiot can still be a Rhodes Scholar.
He’ll do something like blame it on Mulroney, Mike Harris, circumstances, blah blah blah no matter how many negative ads our side puts out.
He’s a real wild card if he gets it – anywhere from CPC landslide to Lib majority.
And if Mr. Rae becomes PM, there is NO hope left for Canada.
“His ascension to the leadership of the Libs should guarantee a CPC majority…unless the populace of Canada are complete morons”
Just a reminder. 30% of the population still voted liberal last time around.
We can only hope.

Did anyone else see Mark Tewksbury quote his mother calling Stephen Harper a redneck? Not even the amoral Libs were laughing. Watching him all night has been a train wreck, but this was the icing on the cake.
What is it with our ex-athletes? Myriam Bedard, Ron Stewart, now Tewksbury…why are they all cracking up?
What I wouldnt’ give for a youtube clip of that. I hope someone is taping it. Please.
Giuseppe da Volpe.

Volpe’s velcro grip on his delegates moves him from the spurned to spotlight
MONTREAL (CP) – After being maligned as an embarrassment to the party, Joe Volpe is suddenly one of the most sought after belles at the Liberal leadership ball. (cnews)
The Great I Am, Paul Martin. How the hell did such a wonderful, perfect man get defeated?
The bullshit going on tonight in tribute to Martin is as stinking as any barnyard could possibly get.
Vitriolic spleen venting beyond any expectations.
Gotta tune it out if you have blood pressure problems.
The pic is deeply disturbing. The vid may prove to be apocalyptyic.

As we go into the evening of the greatest night since 68 my thoughts are on hair.
Having none I seek a proxy. Gerard or Iggy!!!

Smaul Fartin’ just off the stage and who does the CBC talk to? None other than “Earnscliffe Herle”, what a joke, Earnscliffe contracts being the former PM’s response to Chretien’s Adscam deals. No wonder Gomery called the LPoC criminally organized. Where is the NINE BILLION DOLLARS that went to the, so called, Private Foundations?
Bruce
How dare you ask about that 9b. Are you uncanadian?
Syncro
I guess it would be un-Canadian to mention Stephan Dion being a citizen of France and Canada when the most recent GG had to renounce her French citizenship in order to be in her present position?
How about the Technology Partnerships Program scandal? Or the CSL and Fednav contracts? Or Honest Ralphie’s Income Trust waffle, seems Scott Brison was there, as were many others who profited at the expense of? Who feels “Entitled to their Entitlements” ?????????????????????
CBC Radio One reported around suppertime that Iggy has a paid troupe of women at the convention who rush up and kiss him on cue. I kid you not.
How shallow would you have to be to let a college stunt like that sway your vote?
Bart,
And what is worse, how shallow do you think Ignatieff is for thinking that would work?
Is it me or is the MSM treating this like the coming of the Messiah? I don’t recall all day TV coverage and reporters simply gushing at how “happening” this all is at the Conservative convention. The build up in the media has been like the buildup to the Superbowl for crying out loud. I don’t want to sound like Chicken Little but I get the feeling that the Media has just set itself to promoting and crowning the next Liberal government. It will be interesting to see how things develop.
I couldn’t help but watch the train wreck last nite. I was already sick anyhow.
Did anyone else watch Dean’s speech?
Did you notice the applause he got when he talked about running an electrical line from Vermont to Quebec during the ice storm in ’98 because it was the right thing to do? He then went on to mention the Montana wildfires last year and how Alberta firefighters risked their lives to help out there….The response could best be described as what I call a “golf clap”
So, the delegates honored Paul Martin tonight for all he has done for the liberal party. Did they mention he took the liberals from a majority, to minority to defeat. And, did anyone mention that he was so sure of himself, and was determined to get a larger majority than Chretain that he called an unnecessary election. Imagine the party if he had actually done anything for the liberals. Oh, I forgot, he made it possible for several liberals to get a lot of unearned income in brown paper bags. Great reason to celebrate.
Just think, the leader will be chosen by a bunch of delegates with hangovers, at least the ones who remember to show up to vote.
I made myself watch the Paul Martin Tribute. My husband could only take the first hour and a half of it. I stayed till the bitter end, till Julie Van Dusen made a point of telling CBC viewers that she’d be joining the delegate she had just interviewed at one of the Libs’ hospitality suites/sweets. ‘Just letting us CPC-ers know that she cavorts with “the enemy.”
The whole evening, not just Mark Tewksbury, was a train wreck. I watched in fascinated horror, as one G*d-awful act/speaker followed another G*d-awful act/speaker. Colin James was OK–but his choice of songs was bizarre: one of them, Van Morrison’s “Into the Mystique,” might have been his forecast for the Liberal Party…–and Natalie McMaster is hard to criticize.
I almost felt sorry for Paul Martin after each successive ‘tribute.’ He and Sheila looked utterly stunned, and how can you blame them?
But the rest…the operatic “Diva” Nathalie Chocette was appalling (Bruce, above, called her “some kind of stripper”: that’s being kind), with wine dripping down her chin and a mouthful of spaghetti, which it looked, for sure, like she was going to gag into the napkin tucked into her very deep cleavage, while she sang Madama Butterfly’s beautiful aria. You’d have to see it to believe it…
THEN, there was Paul Martin’s speech, which droned on and on and on and on… Isn’t a Tribute to oneself supposed to end in gratitude and a fade out? He used it as a soapbox to excoriate the CPC and Prime Minister Stephen Harper, about the only time that Mr. Dithers actually became animated, passionate, and focused: But it was in extremely poor taste, and revealed, yet again, just how desperate the LPC has become: do a hatchet job on the Conservatives instead of highlight what the LPC has done best, the main reason being that it was hard to come up with what they did best…Pathetic.
And can’t Paul Martin do ANYTHING without that look of crazed bewilderment on his face? It seemed to be asking, “What the H*ll am I doing here?”
I can’t think of a worse MC than Mark Tewksbury, though, as a gay Olympian, he was a representative of one of the many “diverse” and “different” groups that kept popping up throughout the evening: gays, feminists, Aboriginals, VERY wealthy businessmen (though Paul Desmarais seemed to be a no-show: I guess he was in the rafters manning the strings), UN guys in the form of Kofi Annan, World Bank guys in the form of past-president Wolfonson, and various and sundry others who spoke via satellite to say what a “progressive” leader Paul Martin was and how Martin’s “Canadian values” had helped them enormously.
Monty Python couldn’t have done it better!!
And, that’s only for starters. There’s another two days to go. Hold onto your hats, folks! Well, hold onto your wallets. The CBC ran the two-hour extravaganza with no advertising: all on our dime.
I’ve especially enjoyed the wise analytical “team” that Don Newman has on the “Broaaaaaaaaaaaadcast”.I can’t believe cbc has reached an all-time low,if they have to use Duhlinda!Hasn’t contributed a coherent thot, and it’s priceless watching Boag’s reaction..like he can’t believe how vacant she really is.
This is from National Post columnist John Ivison’s convention blog:
It seems to be fair comment to say that at Conservative conventions, delegates discuss how to run the country; at NDP conventions, delegates discuss how to run the country into the ground; at Bloc conventions, delegates discuss how to run another country; while at Liberal conventions, no-one much cares who is running the country, as long as they have a hospitality suite.

Re: Sammy’s comment about CBC running two hours without commercials.
Didn’t(couldn’t force myself to) watch it but if CBC really ran two hours without commercials I want to know who paid for it. If CBC ran it with no charge I want to know who’s decision it was and how much under the table cash he/she received for it. Can anyone confirm this as I want to follow this up with CBC.
My prediction – Stephan Dion is going to be the next liberal leader. Rae’s delegates won’t vote for Iggy and vise versa. To rule Canada you have to rule Quebec. If a French Canadian gets in quebecers will vote for him as will liberals in the rest of Canada. Quebecers only vote for there own. This is why we have had french PM’s for almost the last fifty years. We have now had a non quebec PM for a year so its quebecs turn again. This is why if the ROC wants to thrive it has to have a referendum and vote quebec off the island. My hope is that Rae wins. Hopefully no one in Ontario is stupid enough to vote for him again, but ya never know…
I’d bet a cup of coffee and a donut on Dion
mbaron
Sorry – the no commercial comment wasn’t Sammy’s – it was ‘been around the block’
I like Colin James but Jackson Browne would have been better;
Imagine having to hear the screams and strangled cries of libranos in love
My money’s on the debt doubler. Why elect an adult (Dion) when you can have sophomoric BOb.
I wanted Bob Rae to win so badly that I spent 10 bucks and joined the LPC soI could vote for him (or a delegate who would).
The more I think about it the more concerned I get. It would be just like the voters in Ontario(and I’m one of them) to put Rae into power as PM.
I mean, while I was away hunting the turkeys returned David Miller as Mayor in Toronto. (well, all 56 of the turkeys who actually bothered to vote..)
Bob Rae as leader of the LPC seemed to me a wonderfully ironic dream. Now, I’m not so sure…
Sammy, I noticed the same thing: Duhlinda (LOL!), in answer to a question by Don Newman, delivered the same two sentences she’s been recycling (badly) over the past few years and Keith Boag has a look of OMG, how bad can this get? What’s this BIMBO doing on the show, anyway?
Don’t you love it?
mrtisaduffer: There were absolutely NO COMMERCIAL breaks through the Tribute, which lasted about two hours. On top of that, there were no Conservative, NDP, or Bloc commentators and it seems to me that at the CPC convention, there was commentary from other parties. All the CBC commentators and Susan Delacourt were cheerleaders for the Libs.
‘Anyone notice last night, when Diana Swain was interviewing Sergio Marchi, she had her hand on his shoulder the whole time? I was trying to picture her, or Keith Boag, putting their arm around Stock Day or Rona Ambrose while doing an interview.
But I can’t do it.
I love the fact that my tax dollars are enabling me to watch this tripe via the CBC. What really irks me is the masses who think they are enlightened by tuning into the news and believe they are getting an unbiased account. Whether it be Afghanistan or anything political, the CBC makes me want to puke.
Tewksbury blasts Harper, Alberta – Click on link below for YouTube clip.
The Red Star has endorsed Boob Rae, of course. Already annointed by Uncle Mo (come out, come out, whereever you are!) and the Montreal power cabal. He’s so reformed now, though, isn’t he?
Boob Rae is like political kryptonite.
Bring him on.
Say, where is that Tsunami money?
Is “the kiss of death” the correct answer to the question for which this thread was set up?
Anyone see MotherCorp’s “Four on the Floor – Who can beat Harper?” feature tonight?
It was like a Bob Rae infomercial. And they sure don’t like Iggy.
The MSM and their NDP PM. For them it would be like going to heaven without having to die.
Erik Sorenson,
“The kiss of death” would be the correct answer to – What is Landslide Annie’s endorsement of Dinning?
Bob Rae who has solicited approx. $1 million in donations and racked up $800 thousand and change in LOANS for his campaign. And says he has learned his lesson and is now fiscally responsible. Right.
if Belinduh is looking for substance over style then lose the barbie pink book…and you can use my line “I only dye my hair brown so people think I’m intelligent”
