23 Replies to “Premier Calvert To Meet VP Cheney In Minneapolis Tuesday”

  1. Cheney fired his shot off early. He could have waited and mistaken Lorne for a ferret.
Lorne talking to Cheney, modern day photo opp “Of Mice and Men”.

  2. Am I the only one who’s never heard of a 28 gauge shotgun? I’ve been a shooter all of my life, and it’s a new one on me.

  3. The 28-gauge was new to me, too, but I did a little googling, and they are indeed, a lightweight firearm of choice for skeet and snap-shooting quail and such, and are enjoying something of a renaissance. It would use 7 1/2 to 8 shot, and the range Cheney hit the guy at would have had just the effect it did. Heavier than a .410 (who uses those these days?), but handier than a 20-gauge.
I used to use a single-shot 16-gauge for upland game, it was very nice indeed to tote compared to my old Browning Auto 5.
I’m thinking of getting a 20-ga/.22 Hornet combination gun for feral boar shooting one of these days.

  4. (Meg in Edmonton, who’s from Texas, imagining gun registration in Texas . . .)
    BWAAAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
    That’s a pretty funny one!
    Phew!
    Thanks for the laugh!
On the serious side – you have to be licensed to carry a handgun, and you have to buy a hunting license every year – but no gun registration!

  5. It’s a rule to point up, not at other hunters.
If Cheney was shooting at a bird and he loses sight of it because a hunter was standing between him and the bird, you have to have your head up your ass to pull the trigger.

  6. Um, I just want to point out that Calvert is more of a weasel than a ferret but Cheney should feel free to fire away.
I really wonder what on earth Calvert could possibly say to Cheney. “Come and build some oil stuff so we can nationalize it in a few years once it starts making money.” Yeah, that’s the ticket, tell him the truth … no wait he might see through that. “We want to be the 51st state, please come and do some drilling.” Hopefully, upon hearing this Cheney pulls out the aforementioned 28 gauge and plugs the little weasel.

  7. And remember this guy was a fellow republican….. wonder if Lorne has timne to get that orange vest in kevlar?

  8. Firearm accidents can happen, definitely. I recall that from my Canadian Forces Reserve infantry basic training where, for some reason, our ammo NCO issued live rounds to us in the middle of a training firefight against a live enemy force at 3 AM in the morning on day 5 of the final exercise.
A minute later I hear one of our course NCOs shouting out, “Stop! Stop! Stop! For inspection, clear weapons,” and I instantly said outloud, “S*!t, we’ve got live ammo,” for there could be no other reason for such an order.
Sure enough, we did, and two of my fellow soldiers had shot their blank firing adapters off of their C7 rifles while pointing them at the “enemy” (one of whom was to become my section commander a couple years later).
Fortunately, there were no casualties, but you can bet there was a military police investigation and accountability.
Hate to say it because I love Dick Cheney, but there should be a routine local police investigation.
Not necessarily charges, etc., but at least an explanation for what happened and a recommendation to avoid such incidents among the participants in the future.
It may well not have been the shooter’s fault as the other person may have wandered into his line of fire at the last moment
I remember hearing about another exercise in Alberta where a Canadian soldier was shot in the back of the head, killed instantly, and dropped a live grenade he was holding while advancing on a trench, which exploded and lightly wounded another soldier.
These things are serious, whether involving soldiers, police, target shooters, hunters, or routine civilians.
Gun ownership, which is a good thing, demands responsibility.

  9. Canard,
I want to point out that even in jest intentionally threatening or advising another person to shoot an elected Canadian official, in particular a Premier or a Prime Minister, is a serious crime.
I realize you’re joking, but please consider the inappropriateness of your remarks and withdraw them.
Remember, people that shoot elected leaders are of two kinds:
    1) assassins – those that shoot leaders for some larger purpose, however objectionable
    2) crazies
The RCMP protective services, provincial, and local police who put their lives on the line and spend vast hours, months, and years of their lives protecting public officials would not be amused.
I would recommend that Kate delete your comment for liability reasons.

  10. This reminds me of a story I heard many years ago about a rabbit hunter who shot himself in the foot. When asked why, he stated “because it moved”.

  11. Heard on the radio this morning, a new bumper sticker is being released:
I’d rather go hunting with Dick Cheney than ride with Ted Kenedy.

  12. Sounds like a case of mututal culpability to me, and an honest accident although ultimately the repsonsibility lies with the man on the trigger.
The lawyer should have made the other hunters aware that he was moving ahead of them (and in their line of fire) to pick up a bird especially considering that he was in tall brush/grass and would be out of visibility when he was bending over to pick it up.
Cheney should have been keeping note of where all his hunting partners are in relation to himself.
Typically when hunting upland birds in a party, hunters move through a field in the same relative position to each other (in a parallel line) and have firing zones in front of them. Whitington should have made sure everyone knew he was moving into that zone to get his bird.
The 28 guage is a very light shotgun and at 30 yds a load of #7-1/2 or #8 shot would not have a lot of penetrating energy. As long as you don’t get hit in the eye no serious damage should result.
Always make sure of your target and that your trajectory is clear!

  13. By Allah’s beard it was only a lawyer on lawyer shooting!

Who says “he loses sight of it because a hunter was standing between him and the bird” ?
I’ve been shot in almost the same way, but thankfully further away.

  14. I don’t imagine culvert is a hunter. He better take his orange vest with his white flag. If culvert was in ANY danger at all he would just cower, don’t worry about your little slug, Sask. He will come home in his shell (snail shell) without poking his pointed little head out. You might as well send nothing to meet Cheney.

  15. Who’s more of a slimy little slug than Brad Wall? He’s never even held a job,he’s like Steven Harper a career fund raiser and Tory planner. I’ll put money that Brad Wall is a better attacker than defender. He’s says nothing I haven’t heard before. I’ve heard his speeches he’s not much of a thinker. His answer to everything is “the government could do more”. Every frickin time he opens his mouth it’s the same: “We should be like Alberta” Does any other province have to listen to this comparison or just us. There are less than 500,000 people in Saskatchewan who pay txes. Not counting farmers because most of them are in the income bracket with right offs that they don’t pay many taxes. I wonder what the royalty rate in Alberta is per barrel of oil?

  16. I wonder if Mr. Calvert was going to talk about any ‘other’ issues – like say this implant abuse that I still endure – since June 05, 2002.
I wonder if Mr. Calvert has considered this program for Saskatchewan – through SGI:
It’s me today – with this implant – shall it soon be all SGI clients with their cars:
In Britain, the government recently decided to deploy global positioning system (GPS) technology to track every vehicle in the U.K. every minute of the day. Just as GPS sensors are mandated for use in every cell phone in the near future in the United States (for our safety, of course), Britain will mandate the use of a GPS sensor in every car. “Has Reginald White arrived at the grocery store yet?” will become a question answerable by the security division of Britain’s DMV.

So I hope that Mr. Calvert understands that Saskatchewan’s population isn’t going to be too inclined to such a program.
I wonder how long I have to wait to have this implant injustice resolved – how long shall their nasty hardware remain within my lower sinus cavity?
When I hear that Mr. Calvert is meeting with such upper level U.S. officals I just wonder about all this. I also wonder if ‘they’ had ‘anything’ to do with this implant procedure.
How many of you good people would like to be implanted – especially covertly?
As technology advances in the area of RFID there are going to be more developments – with the use of the vast cellular radio infrastructure – to give us CRFID’s – which is what is [most likely] implanted within my sinus.
My victimizer is SGI…they coordinated the implant procedure on June 05, 2002.
Why do I think it is SGI?
Here is a copy of my dnetal record – which recrds SGI on it:
