Olivia Chow and Jack Layton now have an excuse for separate bedrooms.
The entire City of Toronto is now sitting in opposition.
No one was beheaded.
There’s a new Opposition Critic for the Ministry of Complex Files.
You won’t have regalcock.ca to kick around anymore.
Stephen Harper joins Tony Blair, Angela Merkel and John Howard on a growing list of world leaders who have prevailed over opponents running anti-American campaigns.
Andrew Scheer, 25, now has more power than Ralph Goodale.
Paul Martin left 3,000 political appointments vacant. Whoops.
A commentor; “The entire national media is insisting that the Conservatives are not an URBAN party, that they must pander to Toronto and Montreal. Well, on behalf of Edmonton, Calagary, Saskatoon, St. John’s, Kelowna, Kamloops, Ottawa etc. etc., f*ck you very much.”
Parked on the driveway of 24 Sussex, awaiting delivery, is the new official government transportation for the Governor General;

Life is good.

I think an F350 would be a better choice 🙂
In re cities: Don’t forget Quebec, which shut out the Grits and went all CPC (save one Bloc seat).
Where’s the gun rack and the mud flaps with the naked lady cutout?
re: cities
As well as Greater Vancouver, such as Coquitlam, Surrey, Maple Ridge….
“I think an F350 would be a better choice :)”
No way, dude! Dodge all the way. So what if it’s a German car company. 😉
re: cities
Also, almost 1 in 4 “urban” Torontonians & Vancouverites voted Conservative. Will the Dippers and Libs represent them?
Oh, now you HUSH-UP!!! Toronto and Montreal are the only ones who count!
Wasn’t it sweet when “landslide annie” got her ass booted out of Edmonton?
Yes, it was Richard.
\\0// \\0// \\0// arms in the air with big cheers!
Does the GG have to ride in the back 😉
it was great to see landslide annie get booted…too bad Ralph Goodale made the cut so to speak……..they are still All slimes as far as I am concerned and it is great to see Mr.Harper as Prime Minister…by the way on the Auditor Generals office has posted,”as of this morning” lots of jobs openings for Forensic Investigators and Auditors………….do you hear those shredders on the HILL working overtime????????you can bet they are
Well it looks like arrogant Alcock has been edged out; so my summoning the Lions of Judah in Manitoba seems to have worked.
Nothing like a good ballot box mauling!
The “Lions of Judah” are quietly licking their chops after a rather corpulent meal.
3000 appointments in a week for a Liberal… No problem.
Good to see Alcock gone. Just as good to see Pettigrew and Aileen Carroll OUT! That’s what happens when you’re a carpet bagger. Or an opportunist. Whichever applies.
I woke up today and the world was still here!!According to the Liberals we were all to be vaporized and Canada would be a waste land… i never even set my alarm clock ? there really was no reason to ,as all of us would be toast!! Go figure….Thanks alot liberals now i’m late for work.
Mike…. the liberals lied??? NOOOooooooooooooo
The split is not urban/rural. It is metropolitan (Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver)/Canada.
The media seem unaware that “urban” is not synonymous with Toronto, Vancover and Montreal (perhaps their adjective should be “metropolitan”). In our next three most populous cities–all nearing the million mark–Ottawa, Calgary and Edmonton the Conservatives took all the seats but three (all in the Ottawa urban core; the CPC swept the suburbs). The CPC also took four out of six Quebec City seats.
So there was no urban failure by the Conservatives, there was a metro one. The Toronto and Montreal media fail to realize that the word “city” is not exclusive to their burg.
And three quarters of all immigrants go to the metros, including tens of thousands of family class immigrants, each year.
http://www12.statcan.ca/english/census01/products/analytic/companion/etoimm/canada.cfm#three_largest_urban_centres
The following are eligible persons for family class immigration, from the Citizenship and Immigration Canada website:
http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/sponsor/
“You can sponsor relatives or family members from abroad if they are:
* spouses, common-law or conjugal partners 16 years of age or older;
* parents and grandparents;
* dependent children, including adopted children;
* children under 18 years of age whom you intend to adopt;
* brothers, sisters, nephews, nieces or grandchildren who are orphans; under the age of 18 and not married or in a common-law relationship; or
* you may also sponsor one relative of any age if you do not have an aunt, uncle or family member from the list above who you could sponsor or who is already a Canadian citizen, Indian or permanent resident.”
They forgot the kitchen sink. Economic criteria are not/not applied. It is inevitable that grandparents will become much heavier users of the health care system than younger immigrants.
People are almost never called upon in practice to fulfill their pledge to support those they sponsor.

Y’know, I’m getting the distinct impression that Kate’s a bit of a Mopar girl. Gotta like that.:)
I like the sentiment behind the choice of vehicle, but until the CAW dumps Buzz we should be shlepping her around in a KIA.
What do we do now?
Congratulations on a brilliant election campaign from colleagues across the pond, and here’s hoping Harper gets a fair chance to build a majority for next time. Thanks also to Kate for an always-entertaining and informative blog.
It’s reassuring to know that if all else fails we can rely on a Commonwealth country to send a liberation force to free us from the Blairite tyranny. Please send soldiers – with guns – from your cities – from Canada – I’m not making this up….
Regards,
William Norton
Deputy Chairman, London North East Area Conservatives
PS:
You might like to know that back in the Old Country, our Liberals are not quite such a force, but they are still keeping up the traditions and have had a very busy January:

Old and mostly white people put Harper in power, when Maloney slipped up they were lucky to hold three seats.
Now you can see that Canada doesnt want what the conservatives are selling. Nows the time to rethink your positions on a lot of the problems facing Canada. One year is all you have to show Canadians that you can change!
Think of Toronto as its own province; I’m sure its going to sink in that they don’t have a voice in cabinet. Wow. Must be a first in how many years? Ever?
Oh, Kate, I like your pick of trucks. Duallie – nice touch. I suspect though that it should be a Ford to compensate for the cuts announced this week. Add a slip-tank and you’d be set!
Harper’s a good strategist; he’ll be thinking a couple of elections ahead. I think he’ll take the steps that will have the biggest long-term impact. This is possible because such steps often look inconsequential at first, so he should be able the get them to pass even with a minority.
Regarding the CBC, it should be one channel, country-wide. Give it the mandate to do arts, news and documentaries; stuff not done on other channels. No more Antiques RoadShow.
Regarding CRTC, it should regulate frequency spectrum, not content.
These are long term goals. I’m not sure how to get there from here without causing a riot.
Saskatchewan can be proud today.
They have the highest crime rate in Canada. In fact, Regina itself has the highest per capita crime rate in Canada. And now, very appropriately, they’ve re-elected the biggest (alleged) criminal in government.
Good for you Regina. Showing us once again that you can’t seem to figure out what is good for you…
Is it going to take the RCMP to get rid of Goodale seeing as how you can’t figure it out on your own? Foolish people. If you would have simply elected someone else then everyone would have forgotten income trust scandal and you could have elected Goodale for your mayor.
Another good politician gone to waste….
Conservative Party Wins Canadian Election. What Now?
Hi all. The Canadian elections are over. As expected, the Conservative Party of Canada replaces the Liberal Party as a minority government, making breakthroughs in Quebec and Ontario. Prime Minister Paul Martin not only…
Hmmm…left-wing Canadian media says Conservatives “not an urban party…don’t speak for the cities of Canada”. Sound’s reminiscent of their left-wing American media brethren with their “not a mandate” after President Bush was re-elected.
Unfortunately, what Prime Minister Harper, the Conservative Party and the Canadian people can probably expect from most of the left-wing Canadian MSM is the same relentless sabotage and undermining efforts from the left-wing MSM as President Bush and the Republicans have been enduring.
Tell the premier of Ont that TO is not the center of the universe. They had a chance and failed. The libs & NDP elected a total of 21 seats less than they had before. This is a win?The conservatives elected 26 seats more than they had before. Those voters rejected Martins so called cdn values of abortion, ssm, swinging clubs, gun control, corruption, theft, The metro areas of three cities should get that message. We are a country of family values, not afraid of religion, The media will dwell on the coming leadership fight in the liberal party, and ignore Harper while he gets his program thru. Will any opposition vote agains the accountability act, to face the voters next time as a party that prefers corruption. I think not. Will they vote against the military spending. How about tax cuts for the average cdn. In a few weeks we will all be filing our tax returns, and thousands are going to get a big shock when they find out the supposed tax cut martin put in does not put more than maybe 80.00 in their pocket. But it does put at least 350.00 + 80.00 in the hands of high income earners. Hope you haven’t spent that money the media said you would get. I thought Layton was against tax cuts for the rich. Guess he lied or doesn’t understand the tax return, Sch 1. Mr Harper does not owe metro montreal, vancouver or toronto anything. The next election could be very interesting as it will fall in with the 2008 US election. Will the libs still bash the US. BC better think twice, with the olympics coming, about trashing the americans. They need those tourist dollars. And, martins fear campaign re abortion, if you want one, or cause the need for one, pay for it yourself. Why should I pay for your stupidity and immorality.
I have a question: Can Prime Minister Harper name his own GG? OR is she there for the duration or until she , herself decides to step down?
I would like nothing better than to see someone more appropriate in the post.
Nothing against her personally, but it just seemed that appointing her showed disrespect for the country considering the role the GG plays.
Anybody know?
And, martins fear campaign re abortion, if you want one, or cause the need for one, pay for it yourself. Why should I pay for your stupidity and immorality.
It’s a choice, as the pro-choicers are fond of saying, therefore an elective procedure and shouldn’t be covered under mediscare.
You’re so right, Sam, darn that Maloney! (shakes fist)
why are you so stuck on the supposed anti-americanism.The election had nothing to do with Bush.
how does criticism of the Bush and co equal anti-american?.
America is far from the wiping boy of an ungratful world.Much of the criticism of the US is legitimate and underlines the inability of the Bush team to get their ideas out there in a manner that does not come across as arrogant and based on bully tactics,if in fact it is being misunderstood.
War is an absolute failure, its about grief, blood and guts the ultimate horror we can visit upon each other.Of course any country that uses war as a means to an end is going to come under strong criticism and emotions are going to be high.
I am always stunned by those in the “developed” nations that are so quick to support war,I find it so sad …my only wish is all those that are so quick to actually go to the places they wish war upon, talk to the people, witness the suffering, anything to get behind the bluster and
rhetoric of politics.
Regarding the MSM’s “urban” rubbish.
If you go through Elections Canada “Major Centres” list of 11 cities you’ll get 36 Conservatives, 42 Liberals, 10 NDP, 9 BQ and 1 Independent.
36 Conservatives…….in cities…….in Canada……I’m not makng this up.
Stephen Harper joins Tony Blair, Angela Merkel and John Howard on a growing list…
Portugal elects conservative president Jan. 23
1. The happiest man at the conservative victory last night was a liberal. Brian Tobin. How long has he been waiting for leadership campaign?? Guess what Brian?? You won’t win.
2. The two unhappiest winners were Blinda Stronach and Scott Brison. Those two back stabbers have a quest for power and attention respecively, that won’t be satiated sitting in opposition. Losers both. Looks good on em.
Dodge raped me.
When My wife and I lived in Toronto we had to drive 30k to get to a safe shopping centre. What a great sight to see in our rear view mirror heading west. Not with standing my bad memories of Toronto I do know the folks there are a product of the social engineers at the “star” the “globe and mail” and the “cbc”. Many of them do not realize that the social engineers have made them a product of pavlovian treatments over and over and over…………

When Enough is just never Enough
Why Toronto is Liberal bedrock
Jan 18, 2006
….Though it may be a mystery to much of the country, the city’s loyalty to the Liberals “has a compelling kind of rationality to it,” says Myer Siemiatycki, a politics professor at Ryerson University in Toronto. Prof. Siemiatycki said several factors explain the city’s voting pattern, beginning with its large population of recent immigrants and cultural minorities.
Forty-three per cent of the city’s population are members of an ethnic minority, while 49% were born outside Canada, according to the municipality. And the Liberals have been very effective in wooing those groups — helping to unite families, hack though red tape, provide money for resettlement, language training or other needs. With a half-million new immigrants arriving over the past 25 years, even ridings that once tilted Conservative have gone Liberal…

Time to rein in Toronto’s petty despots
Dec 3, 2005
Two years after he was elected to office on a pledge to clean up government, Toronto Mayor David Miller continues to preside over a corrupt administration. This corruption is not limited to the high-profile cases for which Toronto is making a name for itself. Petty corruption is the stuff of daily life at city hall…
….The local despots — in Toronto they’re called councillors — do more than curry favour through their power: As the advisory panel points out, they act to blindly stop development, discourage business, and otherwise harm the city through arbitrary actions that cater to special interests and political allies…
….One example of the trivial ways in which councillors use their office-holder muscle on behalf of friends and political allies can be seen in a case involving Councillor Olivia Chow, the high-profile wife of NDP leader Jack Layton (and now a candidate for federal office), and Green Beanery, a small non-profit company located in a downtown residential neighbourhood (I am a director of this non-profit)….

Chinese voters encouraged to put aside minority mentality
Jan 12, 2006
Being a minority should not be a barrier to voting, Rev. Dominic Tse told a mostly Chinese audience Wednesday afternoon in Markham.
Be part of Canada instead of “staying in a Chinatown minority”, Rev. Tse said. “Many (Chinese people) live in a ghetto. They go to work, come home, read about (back) home until something bad happens and their benefits are taken away.” ….
….While all five panelists agreed it is important to vote, opinions differed as to whether the government and political candidates are doing enough to reach people of different ethnic backgrounds, especially during the election….
…Daisy Wai believes the government has done more than enough to help immigrants, pointing to Canada’s strong ESL programs and the inclusiveness she has felt and opportunities she has been given…

Snowbunnie,
Here’s all you ever wanted to know about the Governor General.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Governor_General_of_Canada
KP
Thanks, KP.
I appreciate the response.
I had that information and read through it again but did not get a definitive answer in any of the information I have read through. The impression I get is that Prime Minister Harper has the power to appoint another GG.
Must the current GG complete a set term? Or is this at the determination of a new PM?
And would it be wise in any event as this might alienate newly savvy Quebec?
The MSM is overrun with political commentators wetting themselves in their self-mastabatory euphoria, when they find that there are no CPC’s in Monrayall, Trana, and Hong Koover. Implying of course – that it is only the wild-eyed country bumpkins that are attracted to that dangerous CPC.
Other than the fact that we don’t really give a fat rats ass, the answer is simple. It’s the deomgraphics, stupid! Those cities are overloaded with 3rd world, and communist chinese economic refugese, who could not bear to have the public tit dry up, so naturally they would vote socialist. Get out the broom and make a clean sweep Steve!!!
In any event the new PM and team have a lot more on their plate than to worry about a new GG.
And I know they are going to do an outstanding job!
Is there legislative means to kick our current govenor general out and replace them with say, Don Cherry? Canada would kick ass! if Cherry was GG! Kick that separatist, sociallist, shit smear, not good enough to be publically known, Canada Hating, hypocrite out! Don Cherry for GG! who’s with me!
Does it have a HEMI?
If you cant Dodge them…Ram them.
Re elect Kim Campbell.
did anyone notice Peter Pansbridge last night comparing the liberal loss of Alberta to the Conservative loss of PEI, only a journalist in nevernever land could dream that the loss of 100000 GST adminstrators votes would compare to the loss of 3,200,000 votes of the one of two provinces pulling the freight in this Canaduh.
and this urban vote crap. –since when did the rural or small city vote count less than the seething masses of welfare types in downtown trona and Van.???
It’s rained in Vancouver for, what, 37 days in a row. Last night, Conservatives win. This morning – first sunshine in January.
Coincidence?
I THINK NOT !!!!!!!
Personally, I’d prefer a ’91 Chevy Sprint.
Beats anything off the line…
Loved mine – put in “V” racing plugs, used high octane, and Duralube oil. Would cruise down the highway (undisclosed speed) and pass the $165,000 Beamers, Honda’s, and RAM Hemi’s with the drivers looking at me like “wth…where’d you come from”?
Was priceless.
Alas, had to give it to the daughter…now it maybe goes 50KM, tops, around town…
*sigh*
Hey Kate; are you plugging for the Dodge boys to get a replacement for ol Blue?
Liberal appointments are jobs for life. the appointed Senate the Supreme Court, VIA rail, Canada Post, private foundations ad nauseum. they are all entitled to their entitlements
I am not so pessimistic Kelly, With a coalition with the Bloq we may have change yet and Fuck the liberano’s; they are irrelevant now.
so what will the blogs do for fun now that the election is over? How about a poll of worst media coverage of the election? I’d like to nominate CBC’s Terry Milewski for the “Doom and Gloom” award. Someone send this guy some prozac
Oh, no, Keith Boag definitely gets the nod for worst coverage. This last weekend he’s been looking like he was going to start crying any minute.
Although I noticed someone (maybe over at Surly Beaver) said Craig Oliver actually DID cry when Paul Martin sacrificed himself last night.
