A few items caught in passing –
M.K. Braatanflies to High Level, Alberta;
“When I checked in my luggage I asked to bring on my laptop bag with me as a carry-on, and they said ‘Sorry, there isn’t room for that on the plane.’ Uh oh.”
Yes Candace, it is going to be a long campaign.
The UN Money For Smog Program ramps up, with Maurice Strong, Power Corp and the developing nation of China – of course – as leading beneficiaries.
Bob Tarantino debaffles polling;
When the different group of people asked on Day 10 provide a different answer than the group of people asked on Day 1, brows get furrowed and talk of “momentum” fills the air.
An NDP supporter finally gets the attention he deserves. Apparently, this …
… wasn’t working for him.

Violence Spreading in Australia
The Australian reports that four churches have been attacked in Sydney by gangs of Lebanese Muslim youths.
FOUR churches in Sydneys southwest have been attacked in 24 hours as the citys riots spread from race to religion.
A community hall linked to a Uniting church was burned to the ground early yesterday, carol-singers were spat on and church buildings peppered with gunfire.
In response, members of the Arab Christian and Arab Muslim communities have called for a curfew for all Lebanese youths over the weekend.
Police believe the attack on the hall, in the suburb of Auburn, was intended to destroy the Uniting church next door, while nearby StThomass Anglican Church, which has a primarily Chinese congregation, had all its front windows smashed. Three of the attacks were on churches within minutes of each other. The night before, Molotov cocktails were used in an attack on an Anglican church in Macquarie Fields in the citys far southwest.
Arab Christians have suggested the attacks on churches may have been meant as a violent attempt to shame the citys Lebanese Christian community into supporting Lebanese Muslims in the race-hate war, which began as a battle against young white males over use of suburban beaches. …
Amjad Mehboob, head of the Australian Federation of Islamic Councils, said he believed the violence had been committed by an extremist fringe of the Muslim community. I wish we knew who they were. I wish we could engage with them so we can find out what their beliefs are, so we can deal with them, he said.>> via LGF

Kate,
Here’s a link to an inspiring video from the Detroit FREE Press.
http://www.freep.com/assets/slideshows/votersvoices121405/index.html
And here’s a suggested assignment for your readers:
“Throughout his nine years as Prime Minister of Canada, Jean Chretien wielded personal power with so little consultation with the public that his government was often referred to as an “elected dictatorship.”
Today, December 14, 2005, as Iraqis move historically to elect the first democratic government in the Arab world, Liberals (and leftists)are in the forefront of criticiziing and dimminishing the significance of this remarkable accomplishment.
Discuss:
Are Liberals (and leftists)inherently anti-democratic, and if so, why. And to what extnet has the unqualified support of the Liberals by the state run tv and radio broadcasting system contributed to this deplorable phenomenon?
Five seconds after this clown dies I hope he finds himself naked before God holding that sign.
Anybody actually been to the “undoJesus.org” site? Man, it doesn’t matter what your beliefs are — that site’s as amateurish as all get-out. Comedy’s all over the Web!
I cannot get behind a “Money for Smog” program, but “Smog for Food” is a completely different story.
Add your own comments? Let’s see..Kate McMillan’s a hateful b.. Oh, wait…that’s kind of rude.
*ahem*…
Kate McMillan’s a rude cun…naw..she won’t let me get away with that, I don’t think. She banned me already for calling her that (freedom of speech, eh?)
Kate McMillan believes brown people should be shipped off to concentration camps?
…yes? Did I get away with that?
Yay…Yay me!!!1!
Wow, I never thought that racist cu

Wow. Typical lefy interjection.

this idiot has had a run in with the domain naming authorities in 1999. he registered (hijacked) a bunch of government names like canadiancouncil.com, statscan.com, etc., and put them on the open bidding market. the gov wasn’t too happy about that and the lawyers devoted considerable time to the case. the gov won. shoulda put ‘im in jail.

55 minutes to go Kate and I got my last vote in.
Loved the blog by M.K. Braatan about High Level. Staying in High Level is like stopping by for a few days in Delise. It probably is a nice place to live, retire or bring up a family but unless you are visiting friends and relatives, Smalltown, Canada is not a good place to kill time. BTW, I’ve lived and had to work temporarily in some small towns.
What is Ti-Guy yapping about???
Braatan should be thanked for his urban arrogance. Somehow, being trapped in a house in the city with ‘nothing’ to do is somehow better than do the VERY same thing in rural Canada.
Ti-Guy is just demonstrating his frustration that he wasn’t one of the choosen few that got to preview Bareback Mountin’ and is venting via a mysoginistic spray of drivel.
As soon as someone starts spouting “freedom of speech” you can bet they don’t know what they are talking about. If they hadn’t been banned I bet it probably would have concluded with the words “environment”, “politically correct,” “Bush” and “anti-war.”
Speaking of speech, I do believe there is a thing called “hate speech” in Canada now – correct? Most of those terms you used against Kate would fall in that cetegory. Actually, just your intention and actions show enough motive for that to be considered hate speech. You don’t have to say a particular word, just your intention is enough to put you on trial.
Yes that’s right, all you lover’s of the elusive “free speech” which you think you hold, keep voting Liberal and keep watching it dwindle away.
Free speech….have you even heard anything so outrageous?
thanks for the link! I’m glad I didn’t have to work as hard as poor mkb.

Harper Surprised to See McGuinty on the Campaign Trail
“In a chat with reporters on the Tory campaign plane, Harper said he was surprised to see Dalton McGuinty campaigning with Prime Minister Paul Martin.
The chat was supposed to be off-the-record, but it was reported by some media on Thursday.
…
Among other things, Harper suggested most premiers “hate” Prime Minister Paul Martin.
…
Harper talked candidly about forming a minority government and he expressed a willingness to work with the NDP, the Bloc Quebecois and even some Liberal MP’s.”
What if someone were to…oh, I don’t know, use the magic of computer technology to change the message on that sign to read “If Mohammed returns, kill him again.” and disemminate the photo thoughout the world wide web? Now, that would be a real test of his secular convictions. I’ll bet his hubris would melt away pretty quickly and terror would consume him. Like most bullies, they sure know how to pick and choose the targets of their vitriol.
I’m an atheist, but even I was offended when I saw that puke with the sign.
Thanks for filling in the missing bits, Kate. I saw the photo on Neale News but I didn’t get the connection.
Our friend Darwin the Atheist Messiah in some other pics.
From The Globe:
“The Quebec wing of the Liberal Party accidentally released a list of ridings yesterday that shows it has written off a majority of seats in the province and conceded almost all of the francophone areas to the Bloc Qubcois.”
Iraq Extends Voting After High Turnout

BAGHDAD, Iraq – Iraqis voted in a historic parliamentary election Thursday, with strong turnout reported in Sunni Arab areas and even a shortage of ballots in some precincts. Several explosions rocked Baghdad throughout the day, but the level of violence was low. The Iraqi election commission extended voting in the country by an hour because of the high turnout. >>>

Re: Money for Smog…
Here’s a couple of question someone should lob at PM Paul Martin in one of the televised debates…
Mr Martin, since Ontario is about to shut down all Ontario’s coal fired generating plants.
1. Why do you want to use canadian taxpayers money, through the Kyoto accord, to subsidize your former employer Power Corp’s building of coal fired generating plants in China?
2. What kind of fees will your friend Maurice Strong be charging canadian taxpayers for his services, in setting up this Money for Smog program???
Your truly
Skeptical taxpayer../
I went to the site, and it’s not been updated for over a year. Most of the links are dead. The Email goes nowhere. I tried to sent the following message.
“Will you also be working for the disamantling and abolishment of Islam? If so, when? If not, why not?”

Media knives are out for Harper after his 1997 speech. Hope he nails Martin on off-shore escapades/tax evasion. The Libs must be doing really badly. Anybody notice how many media sites are polling to see where we’re getting our news? I suspect they’re going to target these media – newspapers, tv – and bombard the public with this story. I wonder if there is an ethical journalist anywhere in this country?
I realise we(the majority of posters on SDA) don’t normally agree with or even read Paul Wells and Macleans.
Yesterday’s report from his time in Martin campaign was less than complimentary. I quote “He’s unbelievable!”
“Is there no end to Paul Martin’s grand pronouncements, stirring appeals, and full-of-holes commitments? Talk about your gaseous emissions”
Last week, G&M and CBC can’t support his stance on handgun bans, now Wells in essence saying the Emperor has no clothes, and Reid’s B&P comments, not a good couple of weeks for the Libs.
The effectiveness of judicial banning of long guns (I wonder if this sucker got approved by the Registy):
http://www.cbc.ca/story/canada/national/2005/12/15/officer-shot.html
“A 40-year-old man with a history of disputes with police has been arraigned on a charge of first-degree murder in the shooting death of Const. Valrie Gignac in Laval, north of Montreal.
Franois Pepin had been charged repeatedly with issuing death threats and harassing police officers and court workers. He was under a ten-year court order barring him from possessing firearms, the CBC’s Amanda Pfeffer reports from Laval.
Despite the ban, which dated from 1999, he had asked for, and was granted, permission to use a gun for hunting during the fall season.”
Good f…ing grief!
I wonder how the Liberals–and Conservatives–will deal with this chilling example of the futility of our justice system. Also reminds me of Roszko and the four RCMP members murdered at Mayerthorpe.

I am what Mark Steyn would call a “rationalist” atheist. I find his Dec. 17 Spectator article on the need for a Christian foundation to keep the West going very convincing indeed:
“O come, all ye faithless”
http://www.spectator.co.uk/article.php?id=7080&page=1
Excerpts:
‘…in practice the lack of belief in divine presence is just as likely to lead to humans avoiding responsibility: if theres nothing other than the here and now, who needs to settle disputes at all? All you have to do is manage to defer them till after youre dead which is pretty much the post-Christian European electorates approach to their unaffordable social programmes. I mentioned in the Daily Telegraph a couple of weeks back the amount of mail I get from British readers commenting with gloomy resignation on various remorseless trends in our island story and ending with, Fortunately I wont live to see it. When you think about it, thats actually the essence of the problem: hyper-rationalist radical secularism reduces the world to ones own life span. Why try to settle disputes when youll be long gone? Faith is one of those mystic cords that binds us to our past and commits us to a future…
…The meeks chances of inheriting the earth are considerably diminished in a post-Christian society: chances are theyll just get steamrollered by more motivated types. You dont have to look far to get the cut of my jib. And you cant help noticing that since abandoning their faith in the unseen world Europe seems also to have lost faith in the seen one. Consider this poll taken for the first anniversary of 9/11: 61 per cent of Americans said they were optimistic about the future, as opposed to 43 per cent of Canadians, 42 per cent of Britons, 29 per cent of the French, 23 per cent of Russians and 15 per cent of Germans. Three years on, Ill bet those European numbers have sunk even lower…
ts hard to persuade an atheist to believe in God. But unless hes the proverbial militant atheist or, more accurately, fundamentalist atheist the so-called rationalist ought to be capable of a rational assessment of the comparative strengths and weaknesses of different societies. If he is, hell find it hard to conclude other than that the most secular societies have the worst prospects. Rationalism is killing poor childless Europe…
Whats so rational about putting yourself out of business? On both sides of the Atlantic, the godly will inherit the Earth: in the United States, blue-state birthrates mean that in 20 years America will look a lot less like John Kerrys Massachusetts and a lot more like Texas and Utah; Europe will look a lot less like an Amsterdam sex club and a lot more like Clichy-sous-Bois. Post-Christian Europe will also be post-European. If youre cool with that, fine. If youre not, you might want to rethink the lazy slurs about Americas neo-fascist religiosity. Merry Christmas. Happy Eid.’

I am an aethist and I think this is foolish, and this man does not speak for me.
In my humble opinion I have no problem with the message that Jesus left.
But I do have a problem on how humanity has chosen to deliver it.
They’re exhuming Trudeau as I write this …
Why, it seems, are so many ‘people of the left’ such nasty, rude and offensive blokes? One has to look at this Bedford’s other site, http://www.atheists.net/ in order to observe their lack of civility and respect. Sad.
Years ago, I chaired one of a series of indoor rally’s that allowed unhappy British Columbians’ to voice their displeasure with the then NDP gov’t. More than three thousand (of a town of 70,000) turned out to hear speakers on taxation, fisheries and other ‘issues of the day’.
Included in the thousands were a local NDP Cabinet Minister, a few dozen of his ‘close union friends’ and a team of young anarchists – you know, the black hoody ‘anti-globalization’ crowd. As soon as things got underway, they caused chaos. The anarchists took over the stage while the Cabinet Minister and his burly colleagues stood up tried to out-shout the speakers and crowd. When that didn’t work, they attempted to unplug the PA system and pull the fire alarms. It was just nuts.
That’s the left. Not all of them, but enough of them that they have to wear it. A Cabinet Minister attempting to stifle the freedom to gather and debate by violent means – the Liberals at least do their dirty work in a sophisticated fashion.
