A few news bits while Kate’s away

Scott Brison tried to get away with a smear and wound up apologizing for it.
Both SDA and its commenters get mentioned in the Ottawa Citizen (no permalink — see Kinsella’s Nov 5 posting)
Liberals sinking like a rock in the polls. Meanwhile, Jack Layton is busy bending Martin over a sawhorse. The folks at Canada Free Press aren’t expecting an election any time soon.
The riots are spreading in France as Islamist wingnuts are still on the tear.
Cuts in community mental health programs and the reduction of available beds in psychiatric facilities has pushed more mentally ill people into our prisons.
CAW failed to unionize United Church clergy. I’m actually a bit disappointed over this as I would have had a lot of fun watching the uproar if they had succeeded.
Feel free to add your own news tips in the comments.

Liberal MP Scott Brison has officially apologized for the malicious and false statements he made about the National Citizens Coalition.
See below a letter he emailed me late Friday after I demanded an apology and retraction:
    Dear Mr. Nicholls:
Thank you for your letter dated today concerning my statement regardingthe NCC.
I wish to acknowledge that my statement was factually incorrect in twoways:
    * I was in error to say that the NCC was charged six timeswith violations of the Elections Act.
    * It was premature to say that there was a contravention ofthe Lobbyist Registration Act. In order to resolve and clarify thenature of these activities, I have asked the Registrar of Lobbyists toinvestigate. I was provided with incorrect information, but I accept responsibilityfor my statements. I regret my errors, and I withdraw those statements categorically. Please accept my apology.
    Sincerely, Scott Brison

  5. What the hell makes Kinsella and Wells ” Mainstream bloggers?” Why does the “Main Stream Media (MSM) ” attach more importance to them than, say, Kate, Angry, or the Western Standard’s Shotgun Blog. I think it’s just another effort of the part of the MSM to put down serious bloggers while still commenting on them. That stupid reporter should remember that people who visit blogs have a loyalty to them and that they are consumers who buy papers or advertise in them and pay that idiot’s salary.

What is it with you buttsex perverts always getting my name wrong? Anyhoo, I can now add “Published Poet” and “Poltical Commentary Featured at such publications as The Ottawa Citizen and WarrenKinsella.com” to my CV. Excuse me while I go strut…

  9. Warren, you are a mainstream guy.
    You partied with the devil.
You are a Chretienite .. a Librano … and that can’t change any more than you can ever learn to play music.

  10. Scot (smegma breath) Brison eats crow among other things. Can’t this fool stay down home .. may get into the underground economy drywall business like many other Merry Timers.

  11. Flakes like Brison and Kinsella don’t come cheap, and one wonders how many of them are out there, and what they are being PAID to do this? (Something will a little ‘fur’ on it, perhaps?)

  12. If only Scott Brison were eating crow, I don’t think he is, as a matter of fact I think he’s holding up a picture of himself pretending to eat crow so you will let him off the hook. I’ll quote myself from the other blog. I have to say though that this “apology” seems to hold hidden messages as well. For example, “I was in error to say the the NCC was charged six times with violations of the elections act” is he saying “I should have said Five” a true apology would have been “I was in error to say that the NCC was at any time charged with violations of the elections act, in spirit or letter.” Further tosay that something is premature like he does in the second part of his “apology” implies that he’s going to try to throw a horse shoe around your necks framing you guys with the spurious charge of illegal lobbying. This is in no way a real or sincere apology, the man is deliberatly obfuscating his words here and couching them in such a way as to be able to go back on them with great ease. But I guess this is what you get from a liberal politician these days. My advice is to write back a statement saying that you appreciate the spirit in which his apology was written but that as some of the areas of the apology itself as a trifle ambiguous you would like some clarification written down or satisfaction should be sought, this can be either on the lawn at dawn or in the courts his choice.
This last bit you can leave off although I rather think the idea of pistols at dawn would be a really good way to get Brison out of politics, prison or graveyard I don’t care which.

Reno work doubles cost of government building
    Kathy Tomlinson, CTV News
It sounded like a good deal at the time. The owner of a huge 68,000-square metre office complex in Ottawa, occupied by Nortel, approached the government offering to sell. Nortel was planning to move out, as part of its downsizing. The building’s primary owner, Power Financial Corporation, was looking for a buyer.
The government decided it would be a great location for the Canadian Food Inspection Agency and Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada to set up headquarters for some 3,000 employees. In March, 2003, Ottawa bought the seven-tower complex for $91 million. A good price for a building of that size, but, critics say, not a good deal for taxpayers in the long run. >>>>

    Globe and Mail Update
Mar Del Plata, Argentina Down in the polls at home, Prime Minister Paul Martin says now is not the time for an election because he has too many important things to do.
He acknowledged Saturday that the Gomery report into the sponsorship scandal is behind the sharp drop for the Liberals in the most recent public opinion polls.
“These polls say it’s going to be a tight election and it’s going to be,” he told a news conference, saying that he knew the Liberals would pay a political price for calling the Gomery commission. “But I did it because it is the right thing to do.”
Nevertheless, the minority government has a full agenda of critical issues to keep it busy throughout the next several months, suggesting that voters do not want the opposition parties to force a general election before March.

  20. Some of you may remember that silly little boy Mark Johnson the Opinions Editor for Waterloo University’s Imprint Magazine who had a pathetic article about the London bombings where he praised the Liberals etc and did not reply when I took him to task in the magazine (as did other students).
Well, his latest is up about the Gomery scandal:
Quote: “I’ve laboured (and, dare I say, succeeded) as of late to make my politically-driven columns as unbiased as possible, but it is hard to remain neutral when the Liberals were so clearly right and the Conservatives so mired with their heads in the sand.”
    Article here
How can a fourth year politics student be so ridiculous? I know he is also on the local Liberal Party committee but he is beyond parody!
Not a word about the Liberals sudden drop in the polls or this:
Although the Gomery report exonerates the prime minister, the poll finds that a majority of the population does not believe that Martin, when he was finance minister, had no knowledge of what was happening with the sponsorship program.
    The numbers show:
    ○ 60 per cent do not believe that Martin was not involved
    ○ 71 per cent feel he must be held accountable
    ○ Only current Liberal voters believe he was not involved and should not be held accountable for the events that transpired, but even among these loyalists, almost 4 in 10 disagree.
So 40% of the Liberal loyalists think Martin WAS involved….oops.

  21. “The United Church of Canada…where you can worship trees and still be a member.”
Er, ouch. I’m a Shintoist and I got married at the UCoC. This only happened because my Easter and Christmas Christian wife wanted to get married in the same church her parents did. I was surprised that the church didn’t tell us to get married elsewhere. I guess they were mainly concerned about the rental fee.

  23. Wonder if Taber or “Chuckles” Duffy will mention it on CTV’s “Question Period” today.

  24. Mark–it was mentioned on QP today, but then they allowed Brison to wax eloquent about Harper not reporting his funding from his first leadership campaign for the CA. They did nothing to refute Brisons statement that it was not necessary at that time. They didn’t ask if Martin reported all his expenses from his extended overthrow of chretien on the wat to his leadership. They didn’t ask Brison about the stolen taxdollars that were funnelled into Quebec Liberal members ridings was reported to Elections Canada either. Brison has a habit of saying things just like a Liberal–loopholes in the statement big enough to drive a Loomis truck loaded with brown envelopes stuffed with cash through.

  25. Didn’t CSL get a grant/?loan from the government that was reported as $60K and turned out to be in the millions? It was “reported” before PM’s coup. Have they ever repaid it? If it was a grant, why was it given? Scott as Svend. I like it. Politic(ian)s make strange bedfellows….

    Re: Brison
Of course the MSM will give him a free ride on the slander…. he’s a Librano, don’t cha know. If the Tories win, it will (hopefully) spell the end of the CBC as we know it. And they know it. And that’s why they do their best to destroy “hidden agenda” Harper…. and give a free pass to Brison’s slime job.

  27. George: My quick take. “Giggles” Taber (as might be expected) soft-balled Bryson in her “Question Period” interview, and without probing allowed him to present himself as a virtuous figure bravely fighting the noxious Conservatives in Parliament–while at the same time painting Harper as an extreme right-winger when at the NCC.
Meanwhile “Calvinist” Craig Oliver constantly hectored Harper during his interview.

  29. Sean,
I hope no offence was taken, none was meant. The UCoC is happy if one person is a memeber. It isnt about rental fees.
I have been to many dual faith ceremonies and the point is never whose faith it is more that there is faith.
My comment was more that there seem to be fewer core beliefs in the UCoC, not that I am terribly religous but I do expect a little consistency out of a religous organization. There should be some things they believe.
If I remeber corretly the last moderator even questioned the divinity of Christ. Maybe I am being picky but I always thought the belief that he was the son of God was kind of important to faith.
Anyway, it has become in its leadership more a community with a set of political and social ideals and less about religous ideals.
My memories of the UCoC in my youth were that of a pretty comfortable place, not highly dogmatic and welcoming but definitely had some belief structire to it… Something happened on the late 80’s and 90’s and it just became something quite different. As I said the leadership was captured by groups with political as opposed to religous agendas.
Oh well. Now attend, somewhat infrequently the Anglican Church. A little stuffier than the UCoC. The kids like it and my wife is comfortable. I think I need to find a good Scottish presbetyrian church, stripped down no nonsense.
