  1. Apparently nitrogen is heavily regulated over there. Both in fertilizer and NOx emissions. They’ve made it impossible to even build anything.

    1. Russia will snap them up in a heartbeat. Give ’em big land grants. They already did it with white farmers from South Africa, Zimbabwe and Zambia. Russia will gladly help farmers move there and get profitable.

      The Russians are smart cookies. I also suggest reading “The Russian Way of War” (it is available as a pdf) if you want to actually be able to comment and assess actual Russian military structures.

      1. Yep, there’s a YouTube channel about an extended Aussie family moving to the Altai region of Russia. I’ve seen interviews with German & Americans as well, who moved there to farm, something they could no longer afford in their home countries. There was an RT documentary about the German, who was a dairy farmer and was bringing modern farming techniques & experience with him. BTW, all the smart-asses who say “Why don’t you move to Russia?” – it’s not easy to get citizenship.

          My great-great-great-great grandfather moved to Russia in 1766 with a promise of no taxes or military service. 100 years later came taxes and military service so they started bailing out.         When they closed off the “Zuider Zee” by the construction of the Afsluitdijk, they vastly increased their square footage of land by a whopping 1900 Square miles.
        We have to keep in mind that the Netherlands has near the same sq mileage as does Vancouver Island..with 15+ Million living there.

        There is no “Natural” Habitat left to reclaim.

    1. Well, to be honest, I think they mean nitrogen-based compounds like ammonia, ammonium nitrate, and urea, which are fertilizers which can over-fertilize algea in streams and lakes. And to manufacture these compounds uses a lot of hydrogen and energy, generated primarily from natural gas. That’s where their carbon dioxide reduction concerns come in.

  23. I had wondered how the proponents of the 4th Industrial Revolution would induce people to eat bugs instead of meat. I guess the government of the Netherlands figured the best way to do this was to simply dispossess a third of their farmers, (excepting friends and supporters of the government, of course). My guess is that they’ll focus in particular on farmers who keep livestock.

    What people don’t seem to recognize is that this is not an easily reversible act. You can’t simply replace or reinstate farmers to fix your food supply. These are not factory workers you can simply lay off, and then call back when you need them. Farming is a complex business, and once you’ve lost that corporate knowledge, it’s not easily replaced. Just ask the folks in Zimbabwe.

    The farmers who have been dispossessed will not simply loiter peacefully in retirement waiting to see if they’ll be called back to farm again. They’ll leave the country if they can, and resort to more desperate acts than mere protest if they can’t.

    I imagine, that like the Liberals and NDP in Canada, the ironically named People’s Party for freedom and Democracy feel that they can carry on their dysfunctional coalition with the D66 and other parties more or less indefinitely, and that they can ride out the misery they’re creating without losing power.

    If the government succeeds in doing this, the Dutch will go hungry. They will need to import food supplies. They will live in a state of more or less continual crisis for years to come, and repairing this damage will take a couple of generations even if it doesn’t topple their economy completely. I can’t believe what I’m seeing.

  28. In highschool I had a German teacher who was in fact Dutch. He’d been a boy in the 1930s in Nijmegan, and saw the Nazis invade and take over. He used to tell us stories about how they had to eat his sister’s pet cat during the starvation during the war, but he also told us that some time before the war, there was deliberate destruction of produce to keep prices up or something. Milk was just poured down the drain and onto the ground. Vegetables were taken from farms and piled up in a huge long mound like a dike, then soaked with gasoline to make them inedible. When the privation started soon after, people would go digging through that mound of rotting vegetables to try to find some further down that hadn’t been tainted by gasoline. You’d think there’d be some sort of folk memory about the sort of judgment that comes upon a people that turns to such insanity, but I guess everyone who could have learned from history has died off.
