‘The war has changed’: Internal CDC document urges new messaging, warns delta infections likely more severe

The delta variant of the coronavirus appears to cause more severe illness than earlier variants and spreads as easily as chickenpox, according to an internal federal health document that argues officials must “acknowledge the war has changed.”

The document is an internal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention slide presentation, shared within the CDC and obtained by The Washington Post.

It cites a combination of recently obtained, still-unpublished data from outbreak investigations and outside studies showing that vaccinated individuals infected with delta may be able to transmit the virus as easily as those who are unvaccinated. Vaccinated people infected with delta have measurable viral loads similar to those who are unvaccinated and infected with the variant.

  13. I think that the notion that the “Delta” variant is more deadly is absolute rubbish. It originated in India which currently has only 7.3% of the population fully vaccinated (26% partially vaccinated). The new death rate per million in India is .1 per million (same as Israel and Japan). In the UK, it is 1 per million, Germany is .2, Italy and Netherlands are .3, and so it goes.

    The “Delta” variant is an attenuating virus. Easier to spread, but much milder. The CDC absolutely CANNOT be trusted on anything. It is completely politicized and therefore should be ignored. The damage the U.S. (and others) have done to once trusted bodies is breathtaking. It makes me wonder if Baghdad Bob didn’t escape from Iraq and is now in charge of much of the U.S. bureaucracy.

      Not trying to bust your chops, Art, just trying to get a handle on this.  Do you have a citation for the delta variant being “much milder”?  Try as I might (and my search-engine-fu is pretty good), I can’t seem to find any info on delta’s virulence (dangerousness), as opposed to its transmissibility (which is blathered on about ad nauseam in the media and the few other sources I could find).
      It’s almost as if the virulence information is being . . . withheld from us somehow.

For example, the latest data from the U.K. show that the case fatality rate for the Delta is just 0.2%, much less than the others. The raw data shows that since May 1, there have been approximately 1,300 deaths in the U.K. out of roughly 1.1 million confirmed cases. But those are confirmed cases. The likely infection fatality rate is much lower because now more than ever, people are avoiding testing, and the U.K. media has been reporting for weeks that the symptoms of the Delta for most people appear more like a cold.

Understood, but the death-to-case ratio worldwide could be affected by confounding factors, such as a better understanding of how to use medical and pharmaceutical interventions to reduce mortality. The death rate appears to have largely decoupled from the case rate (and that’s a good thing!), but without a more nuanced, evidentiary understanding of why, there’s still going to be lots of people arguing that vaxxes etc. are largely responsible, not a decrease in delta’s virulence.

          It would be nice to come back at such an argument with info that was able to tease out the differences.

    1. How do we separate the cases caused by opening up and those and others caused by a more contagious variant?
      Like any virus, mutations are less infectious but more transmissible. They act like this is some new scientific discovery.
      The delta variant is different, vaccinations don’t work, the CDC opines speciously, again falling back on outcome.
      Ignoring current falling, not rising hospitalizations and deaths, but unlike last summer cases an independent variable.
      Lockdowns and masks and cases have been independent variables all along, but before at least cases tracked deaths.
      Not so now. So WTF are they talking about? Those slides telling us the war has changed, don’t square that circle.

      The bottom line is the bottom line. Isn’t what they told us when this whole thing started – wash your hands, don’t touch your face. Oh, that was to provide China with needed cover of time. The only consistent element is ignorance and control.

    2. “Cases” are people who test positive (often a false positive). “Cases” are not people who are sick, or who will likely get sick (science/reality shows that 95-98% do not even notice). “Cases” can be increased by strategic use of testing, and manipulation of statistics, and use of rhetoric tricks (logical fallacies). “Cases” whenever you see that word, you are being played. Just remember, “cases” does not mean sick people.

      Any news story that claims to be science and uses the word “cases” should be ignored, it is not science.

  21. How do I “know” (strongly suspect) that NO variant is worse than the original? Because the virus was optimized for infecting humans. It’s already as dangerous as it can be, It’s only got one way to mutate, and that’s to become less dangerous.

      That said it is the height of vanity to think we are propaganda immune. And a high IQ is no defence; probably the reverse.

      1. A high IQ allows you to make more complex and convincing sounding rationalizations to believe what you have decided you want to believe anyway. There are whole colleges courses, even whole colleges, now devoted to the idea that it is an absolute truth that there are no absolute truths, run by and invented by very smart people (well, fairly smart, but they claim to be very smart) who will tell you “believe us, because we are very smart”. And yet they cannot even notice that their statement contradicts itself.

        For those who don’t know logic (pretty much everyone today, since it is not taught), here is the logic. If it is true that there are no absolute truths, then the “truth”, stated “there are no absolute truths” is itself not an absolute truth. Therefore, the only possible conclusion , if it is true, is that there are some things that are absolute truths. Oh, and the statement that there are no absolute truths is not and cannot be on of them.

    The CDC said in a report on Friday that 127 vaccinated people infected with the Delta variant during the outbreak APPEARED TO CARRY as much virus as 84 unvaccinated or partially vaccinated people who become infected. The report referred to an outbreak in Barnstable County, Mass. Local officials there have said that at least 430 confirmed Covid-19 cases have been linked to one cluster following festivities over the July 4 weekend in Provincetown, on the tip of Cape Cod.

    “High viral loads SUGGEST an increased risk of transmission and RAISED CONCERN that, unlike with other variants, (ME- OR ANY OTHER VIRUSES) vaccinated people infected with Delta can transmit the virus,” CDC Director Rochelle Walensky said in a statement on Friday. “This finding is concerning and was a pivotal discovery leading to CDC’s updated mask recommendation.”

    Meanwhile at Cape Cod, the epicentre of the new delta variant breakout that provides impetus for lockdowns and masks?

    COVID-19 cases have been plummeting across the state in recent months with the rise in vaccination rates.”

Most people have mild symptoms and received a COVID-19 test when they went to Outer Cape Health Services to check out respiratory-type ailments.”

    Btw, two deaths in a week, our of 473 total deaths, which has 50% population increase in the summer, one of the highest median ages in the the US, permanent population around 200,000, so with a .24% death rate, not including visitors.

    Btw, just for fun I checked the whole state of Massachusetts. Daily deaths at 8 per 10 million, about five a day.
    That’s less than the US overall at 1 per million, or put another way .0001% of the population, as CDC mines the data.

    The Centre for DeMarxist Control data is ridiculous, to base a national mandate on this nonsense, anecdotal data at best.

    2. Those may be stats for now, but there are many sinister things going on as they push people to take these vaccines. A number of countries are pushing it on pregnant women, assuring them it is safe, yet there is a significant increase in miscarriages. We also do not know what the long term effects are, and we have a murky understanding of side effects. So, come back in six months and we will see what your stats look like.

    3. Speaking of the CDC PowerPoint link, check out page 15 showing fatality rate vs. average number of people infected by sick person for a variety of diseases. Note how the y-axis uses a log scale for fatality rate. This compresses the chart to make both the original and delta Covid varieties appear almost half as deadly as the Spanish Flu, SARS, and Polio. However, reading the fatality rates shows both Covid variety fatality rates are between 0.1 and 1.1 while the Spanish Flu, SARS, and Polio have a 10% fatality rate. This is straight out of “How To Lie With Charts” by Gerald Everett Jones. Even if you read the numbers, your mind sees the physical proximity and interprets Covid as being much more dangerous then the numbers indicate.

      For extra geek points, try plotting this using a linear scale.

  35. I have visited Last Duel Park in Perth Ontario. It commemorates the last duel faught in Ontario. Sadly, a promising young man died. Initially, the other party was ok to walk away, and the guy who died, also, but his assistant (second) egged him on. Sad story, ultimately precipitated by a misunderstanding. The challenger ended up marrying the woman over whose honour they faught, but they were not happy. Not a good way to solve problems in my view, but we certainly could benefit from an improved sense of honour among politicians.
