“Ottawa can’t seem to shake this tendency to flatter”

Two former diplomats are warning that the Liberal government’s recent silence on China could reinforce the country’s increasingly belligerent actions on the world stage, amid concerns Chinese officials actively misled the World Health Organization during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic.
 
David Mulroney, who served as Canadian ambassador to China in Beijing between 2009 and 2012, said Ottawa’s “almost humiliating” posture toward China in recent weeks was a missed opportunity to acknowledge the country’s shortcomings during the viral outbreak.
 
China has drawn criticism for providing potentially faulty information to the WHO, particularly in the first weeks of the spread of COVID-19, which in turn left world leaders largely ill-prepared for the virus.
 
Guy Saint-Jacques, who served as Canada’s envoy to China from 2012 to 2016, said leaders in Canada and elsewhere need to call for a full investigation of the WHO after it uncritically relayed information from Beijing observers claim could be inaccurate.
 
He also denounced recent “reprehensible” comments by Health Minister Patty Hajdu, who dismissed claims about faulty Chinese reporting as “conspiracy theories” that originated “on the Internet.”
 
Mulroney said the recent silence by Ottawa is part of a long-standing instinct to gloss over Chinese aggressions, largely due to its tendency to retaliate and its growing economic heft. But an unwillingness to acknowledge even the possibility of Chinese misdeeds could sow public distrust.

He did it when he sent them 16 tons of our emergency supplies. He did it when he sent them funds for the very Wuhan lab that probably is the source of the Kung flu. He did that when after the outbreak he gave Visas to hundreds of Wuhan residents. Actions speak louder than words, and apart for Tedros, China could not count on a more loyal and humble, bootlicking serf.

We need some planes to fly. But, he is bringing home people from weird countries, For free, but not me. I have a booked paid flight with my dog, cancelled once, and re-booked for May.

  5. L, you won’t have to worry about any of that in the future. The government has found a way to force all people into whatever box they deem appropriate and travel will be one of the one’s that will not be acceptable. We were forced to come back from our perch in Florida long before usual because we were a danger to Canada and Canadians, that is the only way I can describe it. Now we have given government the ability to really herd us and force things on us that we would never accept. I for one find it dangerous beyond anything that has ever happened and unacceptable. I guess the next step for me will be a forced death.

    1. You are probably right. I will probably not be able to come back here next November. I did not try very hard to obey the Trudeau order to come home In March, so am suffering the consequences. You made it back. We support our snowbird economies in the USA and they know that and appreciate the business.

  11. Anyone who think that Canadian government grant agencies are unbiased nonpartisan incorruptible bastions of scientific truth is a naive fool. They are as corrupt as any agency can be. They just cloak themselves in the sacred tenants of peer review and the pure search for truth. Only the excellent get funded. Who gets to choose who is excellent enough to be funded? The ones the committee choses to fund. Who gets chosen to be on the committee? The people the committee gets to decide who are excellent enough to be on the committee. Who always gets funded? The committee members of course because they are the most excellent. They are proud of and boast about how only 10% of the most excellent of excellent qualified scientists actually get funding. The worst of it is that if Ottawa simply disbanded the entire corrupt bureaucracy running scientific grant funding, disbanded the committees with their huge expense accounts flying around to meet and discuss who is excellent enough to be funded, and gave every qualified university professor the grant they ask for, it would actually cost government less! That has been proven scientifically in peer reviewed literature. So it does not surprise me at all to learn a professor working with the Chinese got an enormous grant. In fact I have been wondering what China got to be allowing all that PPE out of the country. That $825,000 is just a down payment I’m sure.
