Yale and Princeton researchers found that both white Democratic presidential candidates and self-identified liberals played down their competence when speaking to minorities, using fewer words that conveyed accomplishment and more words that expressed warmth.

If you are in an fashionable, approved group then they merely talk down to you like you’re an idiot child who needs to be taken protected (POC, women, LGBT, Muslim ) If they dislike you, they treat you like untouchables (Conservative, libertarian, working class, Xtian, rural).

This attitude of intellectual superiority and assuming others aren’t as competent also explains the dumbing down of the education system. From elementary school to university, there is a snobbish, even patriarchal attitude that “those people” couldn’t possibly learn and understand the same concepts we did so it’s unfair to keep such high educational standards.

I student taught at a small town in southwest Ontario. The school had two black kids, brother and sister. Watching the white kids act cool to relate to them was kind of embarrassing, but they meant well, and they had no previous experience. Kind of pathetic to see that grown up liberals – a contradiction?- aren’t any better at it.

Your point is well taken hb, however, the headline is from the Washington Times not the New York Times. If their intent was to use “scare quotes” they would have used double quotation marks. Accepted Associated Press style is to use single quotation marks in a headline when it contains a quotation. In this case, the word “patronize” in the headline is taken from a quotation of the study’s abstract in the story.
