Keystone’s friends and foes alike may have underestimated the North American rail system’s ability to handle the thick, gritty oil from western Canada known as tar sands. And while rail was originally a stopgap solution to the lack of a pipeline, oil producers have discovered its advantages.
Now, transportation and energy experts on both sides of the border believe that Canadian crude shipments by rail will continue to increase, whether the pipeline is ultimately approved and built or not. Concerns about the safety of rail shipments after a series of recent derailments won’t slow the growth, they say.

Warren Buffet must be swimming in his cash, laughing at the watermelons.
Looks like the ethanol swindlers have found a worthy competitor to see who can kill the most starving people.
Yes indeed, and if these left-wing environmental loons had bothered to talk to a single oil man they would have learned this fact.
As for the Obama-worshipping Buffet, he is a hypocrite.
Joel;
BNSF estimated they would be hauling about 1 million bpd by the close of 2014. Since buying BNSF Buffet has almost doubled his money. Bill Gates is the largest shareholder in CNR I believe. Both CPR and CNR are ramping up rail loading facilities but state that crude is only about 5% of their revenue. Never saw any bpd estimates.
The problem with shipping crude by rail IMO is the ongoing threat of government intervention. Rail is increasing spending on safety but tough to invest a lot of capital without the assurance that use will be on going. My understanding is that 35000 new tankers are on order.
if I remember correctly Suncor and Syncrude put out a beautiful 40 API synthetic crude. no grit ,minimal sulphur
I wonder when Lac Megantic will start the class action against tides Canada?
Class action? Why not just hire the same rent-a-mob retards that Tides uses, pay them more money, and then have them “occupy” every office belonging to Tides until the mountain of garbage and feces renders their properties unusable. Now that would be a better use of their money rather than paying lawyers to sue them. And it would be fun to watch as well.
Burn, baby, burn!!!
What cal2 said. They must be shipping the upgraded syncrude, not the bitumen. I doubt any facilities have been configured for the unique processing bitumen must go through before conventional refineries can handle it, outside of the upgraders at Ft. McMurray.

Not gonna grow with Komdrade Harper mandating grain shipment quotas for the rail industry.
I know it’s light. There are three cokers at suncor and a fluid bed Coker at syncrude, the oil is light
Each rail car is a 60ft pipe, capped at each end with wheels under it, therefore each car is an autonomous pipeline. Unfortunately they sometimes fall over and break.
That’s what I was thinking.
The lies about the oil sands and Canada’s intentions are just baffling and angering.
All of this tree-hugger shit is based on a demonstrably false
premise! The Earth is not getting warmer, animal species are
not dying off, CO2 is not a pollutant, Electric cars and
solar panels are not only not necessary, they are less than
worthless!
The anti nuclear power, anti Keystone and anti fracking dorks
are so brain dead, they they are too stupid to breathe.
They have no concept of the laws of physics. I am in the process
of putting together an array of 9,996 pennies for a photograph.
Any gas that constitutes 1 percent or less of the Earth’s
atmosphere is called trace levels.
That is 3-1/2 cents out of 10,000.
CO2 exists at about .35 percent, the vast majority of which is
created by nature. I have had clueless morons tell me on this
web site that CO2 is a “Powerful greenhouse gas.” Has it any
more power than O2 or Nitrogen?
At these levels, CO2 is irrelevant!
As usual, profits of Obozo’s cronies are more important than peoples lives. The simplest thing to do is just to ban shipments of crude oil through Canada. What can be suggested to the US that an underground railway be built which would be dedicated to the transport of oil. All oil car traffic would be through this underground railroad freeing up surface rail lines for more important uses like transporting food.
If Obozo is worried about the oil sands “carbon footprint”, then a totally enclosed underground railroad would allow for very efficient CO2 capture from the trains as they travel under the NW US. What’s not to like about this?
Oil by rail. I wonder what the downside to that might be.
the first comment summed it up. buffet. as long as he has the rails and cars and barryo is in office there will be no keystone.
Using rail is a work around. It’s what the private sector does when they have, A. A product people need, and B. People who are willing and able to pay for it.
I think this whole thing looks like Warren Buffet bought himself some railways, and then bought himself a President.
Possibly some digging into some Watermelon finances might reveal Berkshire/Hathaway-ish fingerprints?
This is the kind of Evil thing that Socialism inevitably brings into being. I expect there’s a whole circle of H3ll dedicated to the weasels who perpetrate such scams. The sulfur stink is strong.
Correct Glenn … IOW “Money Talks and Bullshite Walks”
0.35% ?
You’re off by a bit.
CO2’s actually at around 0.04% in the atmosphere, which is about one order of magnitude (10 times) LESS than what your stated percentage is.
However – given the way things are going these days with warm-mongering math, hysterics and re-definitions perhaps less really IS more.
