Reader Tips

Tonight we watch a mini-documentary produced by the NYT about the incendiary case of Tawana Brawley, the African-American teenager who in 1988 falsely accused three white men, including a local Assistant DA, of raping her, smearing her body with faeces, and writing racist and misogynist words on her torso.
The Reverend Al Sharpton, who first burst into the national spotlight by fanning racial hatred after the “incident”, features prominently in the retro report. Currently the host of his own nightly talk show on MSNBC, Sharpton still refuses to take any responsibility for the racial hatred he incited or admit that Brawley’s story was a lie.
As the great rhetorician himself puts it,

“I think that the lessons of Brawley is (sic) very unstructive (sic) for me and others, but I think that people want to cut off the lessons where they want.”

Exactly.
Without further ado, here’s The Tawana Brawley Case: Retro Report.
Comment we much. We must, and we will much, about that, be committed.*

  1. Probably not the best approach:

The New Jersey man who is fighting to regain custody of his young children–one of whom he named Adolf Hitler Campbell–showed up today for a Family Court hearing wearing a full Nazi uniform and a Hitler moustache…

  2. EBD, I had something else in mind. Why didn’t you post that instead? It’s always about what you want to watch.

  3. “…we buy as much of our fruits and vegetables as possible from Fukushima Prefecture, the Connecticut-size jurisdiction where the plant is located (we even specially order boxes of Fukushima produce) while millions of others in Japan take extreme care to consume only food from the far west and south of the country. And yes, our whole family, including our 12- and 10-year-old sons, eats Fukushima food. We’re convinced it’s perfectly safe, and we like helping people whose products suffer from an unjust taint.”

  4. I honestly thought that was the video you had in mind.
I’m not sure yet what happened – I’m looking into it – but I would guess that my selfishness somehow interfered with your alpha frequency and/or it’s amplitude.

  5. Hopefully I am not transgressing the intent of Reader Tips too much, but I received the following poem today and thought it was great.
About EBD’s video choice this evening. I think society is still suffering from the legal travesty that occurred in this case.
    A POEM WORTH READING
He was getting old and paunchy
And his hair was falling fast,
And he sat around the Legion,
    Telling stories of the past.
Of a war that he once fought in
And the deeds that he had done,
    In his exploits with his buddies;
    They were heroes, every one.
And ‘tho sometimes to his neighbors
    His tales became a joke,
    All his buddies listened quietly
For they knew where of he spoke.
But we’ll hear his tales no longer,
For ol’ Joe has passed away,
And the world’s a little poorer
    For a Soldier died today.
He won’t be mourned by many,
Just his children and his wife.
    For he lived an ordinary,
    Very quiet sort of life.
He held a job and raised a family,
    Going quietly on his way;
And the world won’t note his passing,
    ‘Tho a Soldier died today.
    When politicians leave this earth,
    Their bodies lie in state,
    While thousands note their passing,
And proclaim that they were great.
Papers tell of their life stories
From the time that they were young
But the passing of a Soldier
    Goes unnoticed, and unsung.
    Is the greatest contribution
To the welfare of our land,
Some jerk who breaks his promise
    And cons his fellow man?
    Or the ordinary fellow
Who in times of war and strife,
Goes off to serve his country
    And offers up his life?
    The politician’s stipend
And the style in which he lives,
    Are often disproportionate,
To the service that he gives.
    While the ordinary Soldier,
    Who offered up his all,
Is paid off with a medal
    And perhaps a pension, small.
    It is not the politicians
    With their compromise and ploys,
Who won for us the freedom
    That our country now enjoys.
Should you find yourself in danger,
    With your enemies at hand,
Would you really want some cop-out,
    With his ever waffling stand?
Or would you want a Soldier
His home, his country, his kin,
    Just a common Soldier,
Who would fight until the end.
He was just a common Soldier,
And his ranks are growing thin,
But his presence should remind us
We may need his likes again.
For when countries are in conflict,
    We find the Soldier’s part
Is to clean up all the troubles
    That the politicians start.
If we cannot do him honor
While he’s here to hear the praise,
Then at least let’s give him homage
At the ending of his days.
    Perhaps just a simple headline
In the paper that might say:
    “OUR COUNTRY IS IN MOURNING,
    A SOLDIER DIED TODAY.”

  6. Al Sharpton has been race-baiting for longer than the past 25 years.
I can’t put my finger on the first time I came across his BS and name, but I think it was in the seventies in NYC,or maybe Detroit. He was bad then, and he has not improved.
Al Sharpton is not a good man.He knows it,but it pays his bills.

  7. Just what church has ordained ‘Reverend’ Al Sharpton anyways?
Clearly he needs to be expelled.

  8. Time for a prayer to that sweet saint…
What the IRS was doing behind closed doors may soon be official policy in California. Last week, the State Senate voted to revoke the nonprofit status of any group within the state that does not allow full participation of homosexuals, a move aimed directly at the Boy Scouts of America. According to the Associated Press, the bill “would require those organizations to pay corporate taxes on donations, membership dues, camp fees and other sources of income, and to obtain sellers permits and pay sales taxes on food, beverages and homemade items sold at fundraisers.” Groups that sponsor troops would also have their tax returns and membership policies scrutinized by the Franchise Tax Board, California’s version of the IRS.

Commissioner Ann Cavoukian’s slammed the government Wednesday for showing a “lack of responsibility and accountability” in erasing the files.”

  11. I thought race baiting con men like Sharpton were the exception. When 95% of the black population votes for Obama (instead of the usual 60% for democrats), I see that they are more the rule.

  12. FYI folks, Ms Brawley has been found in one of the Carolinas working as a nurse. The people she defamed and perjured herself about, have found her, served her, and now she is facing a lawsuit she will never win. She can settle, and never have to admit in court that she and fat al were lying, or she can fight it out, and you know fat al will be subpoenaed, and then the real fun begins. I was living very close to the New York State border when this happened. It was on the news every day, it even made an episode of “Law and Order”, and they explored the idea that the victim was not a victim. Sometimes, even after many years, justice must be applied, and if Ms. Brawley, or whatever her name is now, spends her retired years eating cold bear poop, it will not be enough.

  14. The Guardian: … (which I’m loath to link to, but no one else is covering it yet…) Mark Levin mentioned this on his radio program a few moments ago…
“The National Security Agency is currently collecting the telephone records of millions of US customers of Verizon, one of America’s largest telecoms providers, under a top secret court order issued in April.
The order, a copy of which has been obtained by the Guardian, requires Verizon on an “ongoing, daily basis” to give the NSA information on all telephone calls in its systems, both within the US and between the US and other countries.
The document shows for the first time that under the Obama administration the communication records of millions of US citizens are being collected indiscriminately and in bulk – regardless of whether they are suspected of any wrongdoing.”

  15. Well, blow me away:
Former Mayor, aka Moron, David Miller has just become World Wildlife Fund Canada’s new president and chief executive officer:
    http://toronto.ctvnews.ca/former-toronto-mayor-david-miller-to-head-wwf-canada-1.1311714
“[Miller] will oversee WWF-Canada’s staff of more than 100 employees and lead an organization with more than 150,000 supporters and volunteers.”
‘Sounds to me like a community-organizer gig. One hundred employees and some volunteers is about the size of organization Miller might be capable of leading. He says that environmental issues are the greatest challenge of our generation.
I wish he’d treated Toronto’s “environmental issues” with more respect. He left Toronto an absolute disaster zone, so it’s a bit rich that he’s bleating on about environmental “challenges.” Toronto’s infrastructure challenges are largely due to his ineptitude as TO’s mayor.
