As a retired school administrator, I used to to think that the zero tolerance nonsense was a result of an hysterical sort of CYA I-only-follow-policy approach.
Having lived in both countries, I’d argue that Americans tend to go in more for very literal interpretations of rules or edicts than do Canadians. That doesn’t wholly explain it though.

Private school for my kids. Consequently I’m poor. My son went on a band trip. I always give him money for a souvenir as he doesn’t ask for much. He came home with a nicely carved pocket knife (regular size, 10 or so tools). I never even gave it a thought until this morning. Now that alone is worth the price of admission.

By punishing — severely — kids who do things like this that are minor or, in the case of the senior expelled weeks before graduation because he forgot he had his gun in his truck — they’re sending a message: your life will be ruined if you accidentally fail to toe the line.
Don’t you think this kid will remember this? How he got in serious trouble? What will his reaction, probably, be? To avoid this behavior. And to pass that lesson on to his children.

Well, I am an American and I sure as hell voted. Most of us do not pay attention to what is going on locally where our lives are most affected. When I was living in Ottawa I went to a local school board meeting and elections. What a surprise! The vast majority of folks in attendance were union members or family members of school teachers. They voted in who they wanted. Only three of us there who were against the fraud, waste and abuse. And you wonder why this crap happens and why your taxes are out the roof?

My son was kicked off of his school bus just this Monday for bringing a baseball bat to school. Tuesday (I only relented because I had just finished a night shift and was too tired to argue………THAT day anyway LOL) I had it put in a bat bag and the zipper locked with a suitcase lock. He was kicked off AGAIN. This happened despite being allowed to take his skates to school in a skate bag. When the driver was questioned about this inconsistency (aside from the stark lunacy about the bat) he looked at me as if I spoke Klingon.
The School Bus Consortium was promptly called (NOW I sounded like a Klingon) to remind them just who it is that THEY work for.

This irrational insanity over “weapons” that is sweeping state pedagogy may seem like the epitome of paranoid nannyism, but it happens with such frequency and in spite of all the bad press and parental protest, that you have to wonder if there is something more malevolent at the root of it.
If one had the capacity for critical assessment of the presumed inculpability of the holy order of state pedagogues, one would suspect this is part of a conditioning initiative to create subservient, self-deprecating, obedient worshippers of authority, deprived of any self-interest, self-reliance, self-determination or even any survival instinct – state created Eloi. It is not the threat of a pencil or a pen knife of gun gestures with the hand or pop-tart which is being dealt with here. “Zero-tolerance” policies have been instituted in US schools since the 80’s. We had a kid suspended because of a butter knife which he carried for his bagel and cream cheese. More than 75% of educators identify as Democrat and give money to the DNC. It kinda says it all.
