[University of Waterloo*] is the latest school to fall victim to these self-proclaimed activists. Christie Blatchford was set to give a talk to a small but enthusiastic crowd of people about her new book, Helpless: Caledonia’s Nightmare of Fear and Anarchy, and How the Law Failed All of Us.
Some of the usual suspects decided that Blatchford and her audience were – you guessed it – filthy racists who don’t deserve to have an event.
I say we invade these institutions, fire the administrators and convert them to user pay.
(*Note – linked post mistakenly names Wilfred Laurier.)

All the good little fascists screaming, protesting & generally acting like a bunch of ADHD afflicted two year olds.
The best little fascisti are always the Progressive Fascisti.
Did Christie’s publisher hire the protesters? Nice publicity. Interesting that Hitler’s brown shirt thugs are still around going on 90 years now.
If Laurier was privately funded then it could do as it pleased. Somehow public funding means some opinions are allowed and others arent. Of course this doesnt apply to publically funded art where any attempt to express any opinion against what you see is immeadiately howled down with cries of censorship.
Sue the pants off the protestors and the administrators for violating your rights. If it works for one side it has to work for another. If the administration wont develop a backbone then a legally mandated spine stiffening needs to be put in place.
There must be fire extinguishers around. The folks who came to see Blatch should make use of them.
Kate’s absolutely right.
Not showing up to protest is a failed conservative policy.
I am abput to increase the sales of Christie Blatchford book, ‘Helpless’ by 1 as I go now to buy a copy.
Christie writes a book about a police force paralyzed by gutlessness and political correctness and her speech is hijacked by protesters who are allowed to disrupt it because of the university’s gutlessness and political correctness.
Hmmm.
Definition of a racist: someone who is winning an argument with a liberal.
Once they start screeching the racist accusations you know you won.
It’s their version of a concession speech.
This happened at the University of Waterloo, not Laurier. It was reported in the WLU student paper.
Distraction works well for children on the edge of temper tantrum. Announce free Che T-shirts for the first 50 students in a lobby far away from the meeting (have a table with free speech pamphlets instead). By the time the protesters figure out the ruse they’ll be too late to disrupt the discussion.
2004 (I think was the year) study done by UoT found that 87% of upper college and university professors were left leaning
these sorts of tactics are par for the coarse
I just don’t get this. 15 years ago, I went to school with some of the most angry, unkempt, and ideological left-wingers imaginable…but even they would not dare shout down a speaker of opposing view points. They had too much pride. What the hell is going on at Canadian universities?
I listened to part of an interview with Christie Blatchford on CKNW a week or so ago. She said there was nothing (or very little) about this in the MSM. I thought that Christie Blatchford was a reporter so I thought to my self Where were you.
If they were not arrested and charged, then there is no hope for civilized discourse.
If there is no civilized discourse, then it is mob rules.
And that is how civilized republics die.
I’d like to see these thugs interviewed by Ezra or Adler on SunTV when it starts broadcasting.
They want publicity and want to spread their mssage of peace and tolerance, so they should be happy for a bit of publicity.
I’m an alumni of Waterloo who regularly donates to the school. I may have to reconsider this depending on the administration’s response.
GYM @12:42 – “2004 (I think was the year) study done by UoT found that 87% of upper college and university professors were left leaning”
Disturbing and doubtless true, but I know “left leaning” profs who would never countenance this kind of… nonsense. Why weren’t these pathetic fools dragged off by security, and Batchford allowed to continue? I blame the University; they obviously never wanted her to speak.
The lefty-fascist clique at the Waterloo universities want their share of the MSM publicity. They’re envious Ottawa, TO and McGill campus speech fascists get all the attention.
Frankly, if the media ignored the antics of uncivil radicals and the cops were more prone to charge them with peace and order crimes, we’d see far less of this crap about bullying wimpy university officials into squelching opinions that differ from campus radicals.
In my day at university (engineering) radicals were physically dispatched with a gleeful abandon, skinning one’s knuckles on a campus agitator was voguish – but that’s another era before mass conditioned emasculation took place.
One must separate the symptoms from the disease. Treating the symptoms, the administration of public institutions that allow fascists to take over events like these should all be fired. A contract with all users of such facilities should spell out the level of security provided with commensurate pricing (as I think Kate said, no free use). Unfortunately, the Professoriate are a higher order symptom of the disease and they would incite their favored student drones to escalate and before you know it you are at Kent State.
The real disease is the corrupted incentives for university graduates due to the influence of leviathan. There are too many contrived disciplines like “environmental studies” and liberal arts students enrolled at too low a price for the nonexistent private sector market. We are producing, at great public expense, useless or destructive pedigrees. We have a system of guild socialism for “professionals”, stifling competition and limiting access which could be replaced with voluntary standards associations.
Liberal arts colleges and programs should be full cost user pay if not replaced entirely with library cards and the Internet.
It was interesting to see that the small audience gathered at the auditorium appeared to be way beyond the age of typical university students. I guess the fascist drones didn’t want an author of a well researched book influencing people who had probably made up their minds on the issue and already bought her book. It was for the audience, at least an enlightenment on PC at modern universities.
The more Dee-Verse we are, Dee-Werse it gets.
Oh look, the Wilfred Laurier library has Mein Kampf in stock.

” I just don’t get this. 15 years ago, I went to school with some of the most angry, unkempt, and ideological left-wingers imaginable…but even they would not dare shout down a speaker of opposing view points.”
It’s because they don’t get their asses kicked enough by either the campus cops or the students.
Like assholes all over the globe, the minute you tolerate their incivility and pugnacity instead of countering it they become bolder and attract more sociopaths.
The way to deal with morons like this is to go downtown, find a few native indian drunks, and promise them free beer for a couple of days if they pound the crap out of some morons who’ve chained themselves together on stage to prevent free speech. Even if these guys are arrested, nothing will happen to them since they’re a protected minority group and, for a small cost one deals with the problem in a creative manner.
Of course the beaten up protestors can’t say anything because it would be racist to do so.
Interesting as the thugs were from the KW Chapter of the ARA.
Now who do we all know who spoke to them about “Maximum Disruption” and what Calgary ARA member is pleading for financial help after being alledgedly beaten by NAZIs. 34 years old, 4 kids, no job nor future in the Communist Party he once ran for???
Sad pathetic thugs. No better than those they target.
As a current graduate student at UWaterloo (in engineering), let me make a few comments.
1) This event was really poorly promoted. I didn’t hear about it at all until after the disruption. Seriously, Christie Blatchford should draw a crowd of more than 20 people.
2) These protesters definitely don’t represent the majority of students at UWaterloo. There are some vocal radicals here–some of the organizers of the G20 protests, for example–but I think in general UWaterloo is one of the most conservative major universities in Canada. The co-op program is huge, with many students at work placements every second term. Being anti-capitalist just doesn’t have the same appeal to students who are competing for the best jobs at Big Business (tech and finance being particularly strong players here), so I don’t think the radicals get too many recruits here.
3) But actually, I’d say the majority of students here aren’t really politically engaged at all; they focus more on their studies and hobbies. If Ezra came with his Ethical Oil tour, that might attract a crowd (because of the science and business angles), but most political talks probably wouldn’t.
Rent-a-mobs seem to really like the swastikas. They are the only ones reproducing them….It’s quite obvious to me that the swastika represents those on the extreme left. It’s their symbol.
Once they start screeching the racist accusations you know you won.

exactly mr stan. exactly the way I get personal attacks from SDA regulars when I point out the hypocrisy of linking to the hated New York Times.
they cough up childishness but still refuse to answer the question.
Irony is completely lost on these protesters against fascism.
And why weren’t the leftards dragged of stage and arrested for causing a public disturbance? Jesus I’m sick of the weak-kneed marxists in Academia, typical of the shrieky left to silence any voice they don’t want to be heard if we don’t start acting like them we’ll never destroy the progressive’s agenda.
These pitiful creatures are nothing but childish, socially rejected misfits who desperately crave attention and feed off of each other’s need to belong. As individuals, they would throw-up and passout if they became the focus of the attention of the crowd without the support of their fellow immature buffoons. They should all be expelled from the university STAT.
If I remember my history correctly, the Nazis also shouted down people, destroyed property and attacked people with opposing points of view. Now, instead of wearing brownshirts, they wear filthy clothes and Che Guevara t-shirts.

I’m looking at this video and noticing the utter complacency of the people in the audience not chanting.
If I’d been there, I’d be outta my seat really fast to challenge the asshats shutting down Christie’s speech.
Canadians are way too placid, way too compliant, way too wimpy. No wonder we’re being taken over by the extremists. We refuse to stand up to bullying behaviour. Our attitude is “whatever,” “I won’t fight.”
Nuts to that.
As for “don’t the left ever get laryngitis” (Roz): Can’t those of us on the right ever grow a pair? We’re allowing the left to intimidate and bully us.
How come these asshats were able to shut/shout down Christie’s speech? Where was security?
Is it just me, or does it always seem that the biggest screamers at these events, are overweight short haired females with bad complexions.. Kind of like Mike Moores in drag.. And whould that explain some of their attitude?..
Why don’t you send a message to the person that organized this whole debacle
Her name is Tallula Marigold (no kidding!)
Try this…….

“Once they start screeching the racist accusations you know you won.”
Yeah, but that’s what you call yer’ basic Pyrrhic victory, Stan.
I know what you’re saying – that, to whatever extent an actual debate is allowed to occur, under particular formal rules of argument and counter-argument, anyone screeching ad hominem attacks has lost the *debate*. But when said screechers shut down – prevent – the expression of views, in a public forum, that aren’t their own, they’ve won something more important than a debate: they’ve won the ability and, in effect, the right, in the corporeal and governmentally-officiated realm, to tape up the mouths of those with opposing views.
I’m frankly at a loss as to what can be done about this. If fifty brawny conservatives went there to confront and counter-silence these protesters, the talk would be cancelled even more quickly because of the now even more serious ‘security’ situation.
There should be consequences for those who silence others; I just can’t imagine what those consequences could realistically be, or who would be doing the enforcement.
What can be done, realistically, given that our laws pretty much allow “protesters” to shut down the speech of others under the guise that protest is protected speech?
What do some of you SDA commenters think – and please, be realistic here – should be done – could be done – in these situations? Bear in mind, before you answer, that one of the tactics of the “max-disruption” types is to obviate the possibility of enforcement (e.g. by University security staff) by being disruptive in waves, as in, wait for security to remove the screechers, and then move in with the next group of screechers.
It’s not like the cops are going to jail people for “peacefully” chaining themselves together while shouting.
Solutions? Anyone?
I mean, I know what I’d like to do, but…
EBD: “What can be done, realistically, when our laws pretty much allow ‘protesters’ to shut down the speech of others under the guise that protest is protected speech?”
GROW A PAIR. AND LEARN TO PRAY.
Check out Melanie Phillips on The Michael Coren Show: Scroll down to “Melanie Phillips on Michael Coren” (I got all four parts on YouTube but realized that the four links would never make it past the filter)…
Modern liberalism has utterly screwed itself/us.
Modern liberalism = relativism = “equality” = multiculturalism = every culture is equal to every other = nuts to Judeo-Christianity = sayonara, democracy = the might-is-right thugs win.
We’re in a spiritual battle, but we’re just too unspiritual, at the moment, to get it.
Whoops:

strange days indeed.

I’m pretty familiar with both WLU and UofW …attended both at one time.
My friend’s father was on the board of regents when it was still Waterloo Lutheran U…. but I digress.
The 80s and 90s saw political correctness used as an excuse for just about every kind of activist and left the administrations and their spineless demagogs sh!t scared about standing up to them.
This will change eventually as push comes to shove and what goes around etc…. also on the plus side it is creating a backlash among students who are not in university for the pursuit of social studies and student activism.
One of the greatest impetus’ for college and university students to reject leftist ideology is the behaviour of these bitches and their screaching scolding intolerance.
Problem is these days is that the university will allow any snot- nosed punk in with a PHD [Parents Have Dough]. Not to mention the plethora of absolutly useless courses that lead to nowhere. Any course that ends in “studies” is only a way to learn how to demand the gov’t pay for everything these zeros are deluded into thinking they deserve. It’s NDP brain-rot.
Sigh. Time to send yet another letter to the U(W) alumni affairs office explaining why I won’t be giving them money this year, either.
waterloser86 is correct: note the grand total of five students protesting this, and that probably constituted the whole of Waterloo’s ARA. It’s not a politicized campus.
That said, the fact that the WatCops didn’t cuff every one of these people and drag them off to the holding tank for processing doesn’t bode well. I’ve seen them nail students with nightsticks for rollerblading on campus.
Sorry, batb, but although “grow a pair!” expresses a fed-up attitude that I think most of us share, and is apt as a generalized prescription for society at large, it doesn’t even begin to answer the question of what, specifically, in *real-world* terms, can be done to stop goofballs in Canada from shutting down the speech of the non-left that they despise, like Steyn, and former Israeli PMs, Ann Coulter, and Blatchford, etc.
Something has to be done, IMO. I don’t think saying – cathartically – “grow a pair!” to the world at large provides any answers, unless it’s followed up by “Grow a pair, then, as a consequence…”, or “Grow a pair, which would, in this specific case, entail (X)…”
I sense a really great column in the G&M coming up. About the only reason I would look into that paper.
On the bright side, due to all this publicity Blatchford will likely get a much bigger turnout for her rescheduled speech.
Censorious idiots always end up hurting their own cause.
IIRC, and things haven’t changed since I last looked, the Canadian Criminal Code has an offense of causing a disturbance by shouting. This means that members of the audience can make a citizens arrest of the loud chained morons on the stage and transport them to the police station. Once you’ve announced that you’ve made a citizens arrest, it is permitted to use whatever force is necessary to move that person from the place of arrest to the local police station. Use of force in this scenario doesn’t constitute assault.
Why no-one has tried this is beyond me as there is a clear case of a disturbance being caused and the nature of that disturbance is of a criminal nature.
EBD, you left out the most important part of my prescription — the prayer part.
I mean it. We’ve reached this pretty pass because our gonads have shrunk in direct proportion to our having failed to acknowledge our Judeo-Christian faith, which is the foundation of the West’s concept and practice of freedom — both of which we hotly defended over the centuries. The Left — and, it needs to be said, militant Islam — have always tried to get rid of the churches and the religious first, in order to make the State/Shari’a Law the arbiter of all things. That should tell you something about the importance and centrality of Christianity in the maintenance of democratic freedoms in the West.
There are any number of band aids that might be applied to the gaping wound but only major spiritual surgery can heal the West’s malaise as it allows the march of the jackboots (all five of them, in this case) to shut down free speech.
We’re actually in a spiritual battle here, something that too many in the West fail to understand.
For our struggle is not against enemies of blood and flesh, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers of this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.
Therefore take up the whole armor of God, so that you may be able to withstand on that evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm. Stand therefore, and fasten the belt of truth around your waist, and put on the breastplate of righteousness. As shoes for your feet put on whatever will make you ready to proclaim the gospel of peace. With all of these, take the shield of faith, with which you will be able to quench all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
When the West stood firm against tyranny, these spiritual truths were well understood. I suspect that, perhaps, two in ten would have any concept of what this passage is about.
It’s not a fairytale.
Anyone ever checked out the backgrounds of some of the professorial staff at the Universities where this sort of crap goes on? Could there be a connection or are the students a product of an entire education system from Kindergarten on steeped in Leftist doctrine?
Whatever, we should be very concerned.
I await Christie’s next column in the Slop & Fail aka Globe & Mail.
Tony RoBC at 105pm; I believe I heard Christie Blatchford state that for the most violent time period of Caledonia anarchy she was in Afghanistan. When she came back she found the situation in Afghanistan and Caledonia too alike to be comfortable. However I have only been following the book issue on the periphery. A suggestion for you all, ensure your local library has a copy of her book on the shelf and publicize that fact. On a side note it would be interesting if anything comes up in the Vaughan by election that Fantino is contesting. Doubt it; too much crap could hit the fan if Julian started into all that he knows. IMO
Very perceptive farmerboy1 @ 7:13 AM. I agree “too much crap could hit the fan if Julian started into all he knows”. I think he’s already making a loud and clear statement by running for the Conservatives.
EBD causing a public disturbance on private/public property is a criminal code offense, they should of been dragged off stage and charged not treated like leftwing supremacists who are above the law.
