A CBC exec expenses his donations?
The president of CBC says recent articles about the spending habits of a senior network executive are unfair and misleading. […] Lacroix said it’s erroneous to interpret the information as meaning Lafrance — executive vice-president of French-language network Radio-Canada — spent $80,000 on himself. The amount includes, he said, contributions to the Montreal Symphony Orchestra “or other charity events in the arts community.”

Isn’t that misappropriation of funds, and therefore grounds for termination?
The entire CBC should be terminated. That would save taxpaers a billion a year.
Yeah, isn’t that like… illegal?
No,no,no.Woodporter and Ghost of Ed.He is entitled to his entiliments.Don’t you guys get it?? And I will bet he got 100% refundable, unlike us other plebes who only get 15% of 3%,after the NON-refundable portion,of course.
And you wonder why it cost $1 billion a year.
Phantom….illegal in the CBC? How can it be illegal when it is their job and duty,to keep us peons unpartially informed of all that happens in Canuckistan? They NEED the money for this, you understand?
The CBC has its own Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Mirroring Liberal Party spending habits is, of course, a big part. They are still looking at eliminating audits so they won’t even have to record expenses.
You guys just don’t get it. I’m truly disappointed in what is quite often a well thought out comment section.
All right then!!! Listen up!!
They’re entitled to their entitlements!! Got that. They’re not like you and I. They’re special, If you don’t believe me, just ask them, they’ll tell you.
See! That wasn’t difficult at all, now was it.
Sarcasm off.
Well yeah!!!
You do not expect him to donate his OWN money do you? That would completely negate his entire belief system. His money is his and our money is his.
Pat,
My apologies, but I have given up on trying to reform the CBC. I truly believe it’s futile. I wish they weren’t untouchable.
Pat,
My apologies, but I have given up on trying to reform the CBC. I truly believe it’s futile. I wish they weren’t untouchable.
Oh, sorry dudes. I forgot my place there. Imagine, me thinking a noble CBC exec should be held to the same standard as us lowly peons.
I’ll just go back to rolling in the mud now. Don’t tell on me, eh?
Privatize CBC.
Privatize the CBC? BWAHAHAHA!!!! That’s a good one, Mark! Who’d buy them? They couldn’t organize a two man rush on a three hole sh1t house. They’d be in bankruptcy court in a week if they had to rely on actual advertising sales.
Just fire ’em all and sell the cameras.
Sorry to say we are all stuck with the CBC and their ways until such time as we declare through an affirmative Clarity Act vote. No amount of bitching and whining is going to change a damned thing. When you accept Canada – you accept ALL of it: Quebec, Liberals, ND, CBC, Bilingualism.
So he billed the taxpayers for charitable donations — and then he claimed them again as deductions on his tax return? Betcha?
I’m, voting for the three stooges.
They will give me ‘government’ money so I can give it to charity so I can claim a whack of charitable donations so I can get a hockey sock full of tax refunds so I can offset my government money funded Canadian Television or Video tax Credit earnings.
Yeah, that’s what I’ll do!
I predict between now and the January budget vote the CBC will engineer the demise of the separatist coalition. Michaelle Jean can’t allow a formal coalition with fewer seats than the Conservatives to take power. Further, if the Bloc was to formally join the coalition she has a problem were a regional party is in clear control of parliament contrary to the spirit of federal governance.
Bottom line: if the coalition breaks up then there won’t be a non-confidence vote. No non-confidence vote means no February federal election. No federal election means no Harper majority and that means that the CBC continues to be entitled to its’ entitlements.
So there you have it, Canada’s media has to hold its’ nose and quickly cull the people holding together the coalition. Nobody’s more afraid of a Harper majority than the CBC.
Elmo, you beat me by loonie
elmo – exactly. He uses taxpayer money to donate to charity and then, he claims this donation on his personal income tax submission, so that he gets a refund!
Martin, my guess is that between now and the January budget, the Liberals-NDP will be fighting each other for the support of their constituency.
What Ignatieff is doing, I’m beginning to think, by his fence-sitting on the coalition, is a strategy of not alienating NDPers who support the coalition as a way to gain power. He wants them to ‘go Liberal’. But he doesn’t want to alienate Liberals who might have been appalled by this coalition.
Layton, however, has to hold on to those people, so, he’ll be fighting Ignatieff.
Rae will be fighting for the coalition.
Their agenda of ‘Harper must go’ is a strategy to deflect the facts – that they planned this putsch, they planned to take away the democratic rights of Canadians; they were setting up the Bloc, a regional party, to vett all Motions passed in the House. Whew..that’s a lot of dirt to hide under the rugs.
Only slightly off topic, but with a budget like that we should expect SOME Canadaian news coverage…especially about our Prime Minister.
This from another blog:
“Prime Minister Stephen Harper was honoured in New York City by the Conference Of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations which is presenting him with its first-ever International Leadership Award.”
Has anoyone seen/read this?
Folks,
The more I read about this stuff…the more it breaks my heart. The worst thing about this is that from the comment made by the CBC president, no less, they don’t see anything wrong with this person’s actions.
I guess when you can’t see how wrong it is to “donate” money and deduct it as an expense from your employer then the “wrongness” of the Liberal/NDP/Bloc’s actions would also be lost on you.
I hate point out the fact that both names mentioned are French–probably from Quebec.

Also a bit OT, but this is a fantastic video regarding the coalition abomination (click on my name for direct link)

sell the cameras.
are you kidding. I saw them at the western final and they are these huge hulking things. they have been using the same cameras since they filmed Razzle Dazzle.
80000 in charitable donations to another high end glitter show explains why they dont update their equipment.
FIRE.THEM. ALL.
I must admit I was listening to CBCpravda this morning driving in. they were busy blaming Harper for a revival of the Quebec separtist movement. I usually dont listen because they have me in a snit by the 14street bridge. but I took a safe route this morning away from pravda headquarters.
Yes, all sarcasm aside, I believe that is illegal. If he is claiming a tax credit for donations he expensed to the CBC, the CRA would like to have a word with him. I’m not saying he did, I’m saying IF he did.
Know anyone in the CRA? I do.
Actually, I’ve always been uneasy about our Crown corporations (Sask Power, Sasktel) making donations to admittedly worthy causes such as the Jazz Festival and others. I don’t object to the causes but I object to the fact that as they keep jacking up the rates on heating and other necessities, their clients (who have few other options) are given no choice about making these donations. The fact that someone sucking hard on the public teat would use his privileged position to make further withdrawals to support various causes doesn’t surprise me either.
Jimbo,
We have a name, we know where he works and we have his position. Does CRA need anything else? This is the one time I’d really like to see CRA go after someone and if he’s proven guilty of something illegal–I’d like to see him fired, fined the full amount (+ interest) of the embezzled monies–and this is important NEVER BE ALLOWED TO WORK FOR THE FEDERAL GOV’T AGAIN.
~~favill~~
cal2, you’re werong there. Those cameras are the latest, greatest HD beasts that taxpayer money can buy.
My spelling mistake proves that after reading this article, my head exploded from the ridiculousness of it all.
CBC – Pigs at the trough. You don’t “privatize” the CBC – you simply cut off their funding and let them sink or swim on their own. If they can’t make it they die a natural death. That is how the real world operates.
CBC to fire FruitFly Suzuki survey says-research shows-critics say-economists warn-anonymouse sources reveal.

Back to you, Peter …
Hey – credit where credit is due. It was my letter to the editor that brought this issue to light.

Gotta support arts and culture in Quebec remember!
“Privatize the CBC? BWAHAHAHA!!!! That’s a good one, Mark! Who’d buy them?” – The Phantom
How about Rupert Murdoch? 😀
Yukon, I feel your pain. My head is now Defcon 3, nuke-bunker-grade bomb proof, just from the explosion practice of the last week.
Good thing it grows back! ~:D
Screw firing them, lets buy every single member of the CBC a ticket to Afghanistan and explain that its for a charity that they can write off later, then leave them there. If there’s any complaining, we tell them we’re outsourcing.
“or other charity events in the arts community.”
Like the Liberal Party of Canada.
I can see the CBC head office from my window. Somebody got a spare rocket launcher?
The amount includes, he said, contributions to the Montreal Symphony Orchestra “or other charity events in the arts community.”
WTF! CBC is itself a form of Charity.. How or Why should Gov’t funded Agencies make monetary contributions to other like or similar agencies.
This is an abuse of basic Corporation monetary Principles. It would get the CFO fired because it provides a backdoor access to Corp funds. The Government MUST not allow the PLL’s money to be spent on Charities without Vetting at the highest level of parliament…
CBC needs to have a forensic audit if they think this is normal.
How much does this happen? Are we dealing with bureaucrats left over from the Adscam era working some kind of ExpenseScam now? Is this what these people will resort to in order to divert government funds to their pet arts groups???
Could someone please tell me why, in this day and age of big media and globalized electronic information exchange, our tax monies should be paying for a media corporation?
Frozen heads on pikes in Ottawa at this time of year would last until at least April, maybe May if the ravens don’t get at them too much.
Fire them all!!!
Question: Of the $1 Billion spent on the CBC each year, what proportion goes to French services?
irwin daisy at 12:10 PM
please don’t temp me, I could build something to do the job at that range:-)))))
yukon gold
really? they are monsters. the other networks were there with cameras that were a quarter the size.
maybe Borat Dion can get one to do his next video.
you tink it hizzy make videhoes?
[ CBC is planning to overhaul its television news divisions, moving The National to seven days a week and revamping CBC Newsworld, after a recent market study showed some of the public broadcaster’s key programs weren’t registering with Canadian viewers.] G&M
CBC a regular, Kate ?
I’ve just sent this letter to the CBC Ombudsman:

Dear Mr. Carlin
Copied, below, is straight out of the PDF of the CBC’s recent survey. I have highlighted [all caps here] the brazen lies being perpetrated here by the CBC, repeated on Radio 2’s noon newscast today—that the PROPOSED (explain that untruth, please) coalition is comprised of two parties, the Liberals and the NDP. These two parties do not have enough votes to defeat the Conservatives—and that’s a fact, inconvenient as it may be for the CBC.
The newscast today did mention that the Bloq was going to support the coalition, a euphemism for CONTROL it. Of course, not mentioned—though duly noted by the citizens of Canada—is the fact that the Bloq is a SEPARATIST party. (If stating this is insensitive of me, too bad.)
“Results of a CBC News Survey
“December 4, 2008
“Outlook on the Current Political Situation
“Q. The Conservative government of Stephen Harper will likely be defeated when Parliament next has an opportunity to vote. The opposition parties want to replace the Conservatives with A COALITION MADE UP OF LIBERALS AND NEW DEMOCRATS led on an interim basis by Stéphane Dion.
“Based on this, which of the following is closest to your view?
“The PROPOSED coalition of Liberals and New Democrats replacing the Conservative
government within the next few weeks
“Parliament taking a break for a month or so to see whether the Conservatives
can get the confidence of parliament when it comes back into session
“An election to be called within the next few weeks to break the impasse”
[Back to my comments to Mr. Carlin] I notice that the CBC also misinterprets the results of the survey, totally downplaying the obvious support for Stephen Harper and the CPC. (44% of Canadians would now vote for the Conservatives v 24% for the Liberals. Wow, that really shows how successful the putsch has been!) CBC’s weasel “Conclusions”, which shamelessly spin the results of your own survey, would be sent back for editing in any grade 4 class: “Support your opinions.” I’d ask if the CBC has any shame, if I didn’t already know the answer.
The CBC has lost the confidence of the Canadians public—check out your pathetic ratings—and I sincerely hope that your most recent skulduggery to unseat this government completely backfires.
I’ve watched CTV Tass this week: pretty bad, but not as gut churning and stroke inducing as CBC Pravda’s propaganda, which, it seems, is backfiring.
As if it weren’t already, CBC’s cronyism is fully exposed here—“Ignore that man behind the curtain”—but CBC doesn’t have either the eyes to see it or the ears to hear it. ’Not a smart move when your tenure’s in danger and the sleeping Canadian giant is beginning to awake and see the “smoke and mirrors” political picture in this country for what it really is: a Ponzi scheme for the socialists and separatists.
So far, Quebec’s been the only Canadian child allowed to get really angry and be royally paid off on the back of everyone else in the family: among others, that game’s up now, and the longer CBC refuses to play fair, the more vulnerable it becomes.
______________
Of course, the CBC will deny, deny, deny and spin, spin, spin. Fortunately, there is HOPE for CHANGE here: such tactics are becoming less and less successful;-)
irwin daisy: naughty, naughty–but what a SATISFYING (figurative, of course) idea!
CBC’s News division is taking advantage of the fact that its Editor, John Cruickshank, just took off to the Toronto Star.
Without anyone to take the blame, CBC News is spinning fast and furious for the perfect CBC coalition – pro-left, pro-separatist (Radio-Canada’s pet project) and pro-Liberal.
On Novemebr 19, I wrote a registered snail mail letter to head honcho Timothy Casgrain, advising him how CBC might ramp up George Stroumboulopoulos “HOUR” ratings and get some conservative balance at the same time.
With a hard copy to the Prime Minister as well.
I am waiting for a reply from CBC.
That they do not even see why this is wrong indicates a state of rot beyond repair. Either privatise the CBC (begin with the French network) or totally clean house hiring only people with a modicum of a moral compass – being able to understand the different between right and wrong for example.
