Michael Fumento reports from Afghanistan

Michael Fumento is another independent reporter who has made trips to Iraq but is now reporting from Afghanistan:

I mentioned in an earlier blog from Lagman that I was sharing a tiny room with two AP reporters. What I didn’t say was that one believed 9/11 was a hoax and presumably the other one, who never took off his Che Guevera t-shirt, felt likewise. That’s my opposition. Do you really trust what these guys are going to tell you and the people of other nations that will run their stories and show their video?

No, actually, I don’t.
But that’s why independent reporters are so important. Check out his ongoing coverage, including the coverage of a firefight in Mizan:

Approaching from three directions, the idea is to catch them in a pincer so that the only Taliban options will be death or surrender. B Co.’s contribution, headed up by unit commander 1st Lt. Kevin Stofan, is to stealthily set up a blocking position with five Humvees carrying a variety of weaponry inside the trucks and in the truck turrets.

  1. “Approaching from three directions, the idea is to catch them in a pincer so that the only Taliban options will be death or surrender.”
Should there be two options? Given the ludicrous outcry in Canada about the treatment of Taliban prisoners that Canada does not hold, it seems that the most reasonable thing for Canadian soldiers to do is to ensure that they take no prisoners who might wind up being mistreated.

  2. The Geneva Convention allowed the Nazis to shoot people in civilians clothes because they could deem them Spies , so why the hell would I show mercy for a Taliban terrorist in civilian clothes if the NDP back home is in bed with the Hamas/Hezbollah/Jihadist supporters in canada .
Just call in the snipers and night vision goggles to kill them from a distance and leave them there , or maybe ship them to Geneva where Libby Davies and Talaban Jack can visit these thugs and have a group-hug .
Too bad MP Davies doesn’t realize that the Taliban would slit her throat in 2 seconds for being a obese Lebian without a burka on and being in favour of Organized labour Unions and gay marriage.
Svend Robinson didn’t have the guts to visit gaza, he merelt taunted the IDF for the cameras because Hamas would have stoned him in public or beheaded him as a homosexual.
If the NDP don’t want to be behind our Troops, then at least stand in front of them as shields to show a conviction to Human Rights and freedom.

  3. the fact that any idiot journalist wears a che “i am a murdering scumbag” guevera t-shirt is, in itself, quite amazing…..it is quite obvious that these leftard morons have no idea of his murderous ways, especially the media types he executed in cuba, while working for that beacon of free speech himself, fidel “i am also a murdering scumbag” castro….strange days indeed!

  4. ya ya ya, i can hear alby, iberia and the other leftards now…..bad american scumbag’s also murdered…blah blah blah….the difference is I do not wear an Oliver North t-shirt…..so stuff it leftards

  5. National Post | Reader’s Response
More than 85% of online voters disagreed with yesterday’s statement that “Gordon O’Connor should resign as Minister of National Defence or be fired over the Afghan detainee controversy.” …-

  6. What? kingstonlad…you don’t have an autographed Ollie t-shirt? Why,they are all the rage with us knuckle-draggers,doncha know. I will send one out immediately, for only 29.95 + shipping, and sales tax. Would you like that UPS express?

  7. I caught about 15 minutes of QP on CPAC…the drama and energy that is being displayed and used by the opposition is disgusting. As Stock Day mentioned they weren’t interested in the Brit soldiers a few weeks ago why the outrage now?And would they put on that big of a show for a Canadian…whoops yes!..if they were in jail they would be concerned about how they are treated…bad analogy.A shame that these drama kings and queens are actually paid by our taxes and are supposed to be ‘representing’ Canadians, even soldiers, while the are in the House.
And speaking of the media, Lisa LaPhlegm so pious and genteel in her interviews with the ‘detainee’ (that she had no problem connecting with for the very respectful interview.)
The Libs have the media in their hands.
Day, and Harper very cool and calm in the House, but that doesn’t come across in the media.

  8. My husband is coming home on leave soon from Afghanistan–all I can do is hope that he doesnt get spat on by the usual suspects because of this outcry regarding how the Government of Afghanistan allegedly treats its prisoners.

  10. I dont think that Canada has a right to say how prisoners are treated in Afganistan. No more than Afganistan has a right to say how prisoners are treated in Canada. We are helping Afganistan rid their country of scumbags and terrorists not taking over the country as the Soviets tried to do.

  11. These prisoners are the rightful responsibility of the democratically elected government of Afghanistan…they run the jails and it is against the Afghan people and their government these criminals have committed crimes.
It is toxic Socratic irony that Taliban Jack and the terrorist/fascist apologists of the degenerate left, ignore the fact that Taliban forces have killed 100 times as many Afghan civilians in criminal acts of terror and genocide than they have Canadian troops who try to prevent this.
Victims of criminals mean nothing to dogmatic leftards…only if they represent a political advantage. Then again, the “humanity” the Left wears on its sleeve is fleeting and only a distraction from where their real loyalties lie…in utopian dogma…and humanity is expendable in the propagation of the sacred leftoid dogma….as we see in their position on Afghanistan.
The larger question that these fraudulent “humanitarians” have to ask is how many Afghanis will the Taliban kill if the coalition forces pull out?
    Google “Taliban” “genocide”

  12. Agreed, wlmr – the prisoners are the responsibility of the Afghan gov’t. Furthermore, the Geneva Conventions don’t apply to them; they are not military; they are terrorists.
However, it is up to NATO and the UN, not Canada to oversee what and how Afghanistan deals with these prisoners. The operation is a NATO/UN operation, not Canadian. And, it is up to the UN to define how a military should deal with terrorist prisoners. The Geneva Conventions don’t apply; there are no rules and regulations.
Layton and the NDP, Dion and the Liberals, if they really genuinely cared, should be petitioning the UN to develop rules-for-terrorists. But they aren’t dealing with the UN. They aren’t genuinely interested in the situation.
They are just trying to turn this into political attacks against the Conservatives.

  13. Watching and listening to the likes of Dion and Layton in the HOC they clearly painted themselves as chickens. That being the case, then I just wish they would both go and pluck themselves.

  14. Nice piece by Fumento. It struck me that this is precisely the type of news story that is never seen in the MSM. The reason? The story coveys a simple message: the work is hard but progress is being made.
Every story on Iraq or Afghanistan I’ve read in the last few years (though I must admit I rarely look anymore because of the predictability) was concerned with casualties, setbacks, failures, or the squawking of some special-interest group.
I’m always amazed that so many people think the US and its allies shouldn’t fight against brutal theocratic fascists, and can’t win against an enemy so week that all they can manage is suicidal hit-and-run attacks against defenceless civilians. It boggles the mind that so many have such a poor perspective on things. But with the source of information they have for making their judgements — well, maybe it’s not so mysterious after all.
