Edmonton needs more penalty shots π
Ward needs to get a gooning like Roloson faced
NHL linesmen need to be a little more aware of the 10-1 violations the Carolinas pull woth no calls in their own zone.
It’s going to be a long haul but hopefully the Oilers can go all the way. The Oilers need to crash the net more, like on Smith’s winner last night. This is going to be a series determined by the best goaltending, as the teams are fairly even in every other aspect. Last nights game was the first I had a chance to watch on the tube. Fine, wide open hockey both ways.
After last nights performance, it appears that Edmontons worries about goaltending are over. Edmonton is on their way to another dynasty. Now if we can only jump start those damn leafs……woe is me!!
The national sports pundits never took notice of Edmonton until the end of the San Jose series.
Listening to Leafs Lunch in Toronto when Ottawa was facing elimination, they were still pontificating about their chances of winning the cup.
At the same time, in the western conference, the Oilers were destroying the Sharks and their only scenario had either San Jose or Anaheim in the Stanley Cup Final. Only by the end of the series did they actually notice how well the Oilers were doing in the playoffs, and before.
One win on a garbage goal does not make a dynasty. Not to mention gooning a goalie… check the replay again bub, the Oiler hammered the Cane into the net. The Oilers can keep it alive by playing hockey, and they need to play it better then the Canes. BTW, the refereeing sucked for both sides, though if you NEED an excuse, use it.
But then again, I hate the Oilers, so I hope they lose Monday and the Canes can celebrate a win on home ice.
Ward was awesome again last night. If he keeps it up and the Oilers still struggle to get lots of tip-ins and traffic they will lose.
the most important thing that came out of the game (besides the victory) was that markkenen (sp.) played pretty good and that is a huge morale/momentum boost for the Oil.
I watched the NBC broadcast – far better than Cole and Neale – and they all (including the guys working in the truck outside) noted that they got chills hearing the fans sing BOTH anthems. Class act on the part of oil fans. It would be wonderful if they took over the US anthem as well.
Edmonton is, however showing that the Oil Country City can act like any other gooftown when it comes to drunk fans in the streets.
Last night, only a downpour saved another potential riot.
One would hope if the Oilers win the Cup that Edmonton is ready.
TIZ
Smyth did not goon the goaltender, he went to the net to deflect the puck into the net, he did not run into Ward. Edmonton should crash the net as much as possible. Goonery would be like Williams dirty hack and slash on Koivu in the Montreal series. The Cane’s do not deserve to win the Cup this year.
Firstly, a win is a win is a win.
Secondly, Edmonton was noticed at the end of the first round. The damn Flames ruined it all.
Thirdly, I was SHOCKED that NBC showed both anthems. That has to be the first time an American network has done that in years.
As to what will happen in the series, get back to me after Game 4. I’m still debating where this is the San Jose series, or the Anaheim series, where Edmonton is playing the role of Anaheim. Edmonton could just as easily be winning this series 2-1, thus, this series is still way too close to call.
Remember last season? Edmontons fans cheering for Tampa, yelling ABC, Anyone But Calgary from the rooftops?
Well as a TRUE Canadian hockey fan, even though Calgary is out I’m pulling for Edmonton. When the next season starts I’ll go back to screaming for the Oiler’s blood.
And Gord, the Anthem singing makes me misty eyed everytime. Absolute class, patriotisym at its best!
I didn’t say Smyth gooned the goalie… someone else above observered that the Oilers should goon the goalie. As for the unfortunate slash/hack/whatever… like that never happened to another player, ever. The Canes are as deserving as any team that makes it to the finals.
Gord, I think I will switch over to NBC too… Cole and Neale are so blind they can’t even make a decent call of the game anymore… well, could they ever?
Mark M, crashing the net is illegal if they contact the goalie and should be called every time. The only time it should not be called is when they are pushed and don’t make some effort, if they can, to avoid the goalie. That becomes very subjective on the ref, but what can you do.
Dwayne, they could, in 1991.
Jim Hughson, now, listening to him call a game is like sinking into a hottub.
Well as a TRUE Canadian hockey fan, even though Calgary is out I’m pulling for Edmonton. When the next season starts I’ll go back to screaming for the Oiler’s blood.
Maybe a true Canadian hockey fan, but not a Flames fan. No REAL Flames fan, or Canucks fan, or Leafs fan, or Habs fan, or Sen fan would ever cheer for another team, especially the Oilers. Do you also cheat on your wife when you are out of town?
PeterD,you remind me of the nastiness that used to permeate the Calgary/Edmonton rivalry of the 80’s.
The Herald,I believe, ran a series of what some common hockey terms actually meant in Edmonton.
The one I remember most is:
What is considered a 2 on 1 in Edmonton?
It’s when your wife and dog go after the same piece of meat!
Boy,I miss those days of clean, honest hatred for one’s rivals.
I would never profane Kate’s site with a response to Dwayne’s nonsense…. I’ll just think it and, it ain’t pretty.
Ryan Smyth is the emotional leader of the Oilers as well as as hockey star of the highest order. A goal is a goal is a goal and the one he scored last night was a beauty!!!!!
By golly, I caught game three on NBC deep in the heart of Texas and although i miss “grapes & mclean” it wasn’t too bad a show. Having worked at the Northlands back in the dynasty years, the game certainly brought back memories even if most the names are new. I was actually touched at the anthems, especially when the fans actually sang the thing. I hope the Oilers go far but it will be an uphill battle.
Having lived in both of Alberta’s big cities, I am always aware of the rivalry although in honesty, Edmonton takes it more seriously than Calgary does. Edmonton’s city altermen wanting to change the name of Calgary Trail shows how childish they can be.
My loyalies are simple: #1 hometown team (or last hometown that had a team), #2 Alberta team, #3 Canadian Western team, #4 Canadian team.
Just caught a cnn report on the world cup. Showed a scene of fans. The Red Mile and Blue Mile have a long way to go to match that mob of people in Germany. And they were not even in the stadium. Does anyone in Canada watch this.
The is the fist Stanley Cup final that has peaked my interest in quite a while. Despite being from Tronna, I grew up worshipping the Edmonton dynasty as it replaced the Islanders at the top of the hockey heap. They need to keep that Jussi guy in net – he’s putting on a show. If they play like they played in game 3, I’m predicting a tough 7-game series and they just might pull it off.
Go ‘Canes go!

Hey maryT – what’s this event in Germany of which you speak? Surely not a sporting event of any interest since SOCCER SUCKS! Who gives a big large turd what goes on. Yeah, you can give me that “more people play soccer than any other sport” crapola, but that doesn’t make it a good or interesting sport. Put on some skates, grab a stick and get out on the ice. Or shut up. I really don’t care.
Mad eye: I wouldn’t know a soccer ball from a hockey puck. My point was the huge mass of people celebrating. Where do they come from. Lots of stories on sports programs as to why this game has never caught on in the US or Canada. I have never watched a soccer game, but non sports fan that I am, I am watching the Stanley Cup games and rooting for the Oilers. Just listening to the fans sing O Canada is reason enough to watch. And, mad eye, quit jumping to conclusions, you might get hurt when you fall.
To Sean from Calgary….”Go away Sean, go” π
Smyth’s goal was a goal….and it made up for the one that the Oilers were cheated on earlier…the one that Moreau made.
I wonder how well the Canes would do if Cam Ward was injured like Roloson??? That’s a big blow to a team, but the Oilers have regrouped, and they’re working hard.
As for the singing of the anthem, it’s totally a class act in Rexall Place….but especially seeing Joey Moss sing his heart out
Go Oilers Go…..(You can come back now, Sean in Calgary)
“Do you also cheat on your wife when you are out of town?”
Wow. A personal attack by a troll from Redmonton. Tell yah what Petey, when you grow some integrity and honor, you can debate me. ‘Till then, go back to the kiddies table.
Texas Canuck is MY kinda Hockey fan. He’s got it figured out.
“My loyalies are simple: #1 hometown team (or last hometown that had a team), #2 Alberta team, #3 Canadian Western team, #4 Canadian team.”
Hell yeah!
being a born and raised Calgarian it only hurts a little bit to say “lets go Oilers”!!, but only in the privacy of my own home…and if you tell anyone I said it I’ll deny it.
My brother lives just outside of Raleigh. But I have friends in Edmonton (and Calgary… and Tronna… and Hottawa). All I really want is a great series. Another Edmonton performance like Saturday night and we just might get it.
Eh, The Oilers aren’t the only team to lose a goalie at the start of the finals…
Look at Trinidad and Tobago. Goalie’s out 10 minutes before the first game of the finals, and the team still ties up Sweden… π
“The Oilers aren’t the only team to lose a goalie at the start of the finals…”.
True, Knight of GMIM, however on the subject of hockey, how about losing your first string goalie while he’s in the Winter Olympics getting injured while his team makes a lacklustre showing. Pro hockey players in an amateur venue where the amateurs are making professional efforts and getting results!
Messier singing on the bench against the nasty Isles in the 80’s:
“Here we go, Oilers, here we go!”
The Moose is in the House……..go get ’em guys
If I hear the abbreviation ‘Canes’ one more time I think I’ll scream. (Christ, even calling Saturday nights game, I’m sure Oilers radio broadcaster, Rod Philips used it more than all his other words combined)
It’s like the so-called word ‘puter and those that say peace-out. Do you get a special hat to wear when you used those words? I hate when new slang gets invented and everyone seems the need to fall over themselves using it in every sentence. (Remember the likes of “bling-bling”, “you go girl”, “as if”, “whatever”, “yadda”…..?)
ARGHHHHH!
Incidentally, someone DID poop in my Lucky Charms this morning!
I’ve never thought of seeing World Cup games and the Oilers on the same day. Blissness.
It just can’t it get any better than this. Oh look, Italy playes next…
p.s Bob Cole is old, slow and boring.
Lord Stanley’s Cup?
Is that some old guy’s used jock strap?
(just kidding….go ‘Canes!)
GM…no, I believe you’re thinking of Jacques Strappe…
