[T]hat’s where were stuck, we either carry on fighting in those hotspots, ridding as much Jihadists as we can along the way, while helping democratic and enlightened reform to take hold that will help diminish the amount of future Jihadis taking shape WHILE taking losses. OR…we can withdraw, strengthen their resolve and deal with a much worse and dedicated Islamist threat 5 or 10 years down the line.
The choice is that clear.

  1. “The choice is clear” to some of us.
But we’ll need strong political leadership to have resolve and not withdraw.
We need Iggy not Rae in opposition.
The US needs Hilary not another Kerry running for the Demos.
Who will the Brits have when Blair is gone?
It’s amazing to me, how fragile our state of affairs is, when democracy’s choice of a couple of people on the planet can make a huge difference on the geo-political situation. I guess it’s because just-in-time WMD’s are now as available to as calculators to despots and their army of terrorists.

  7. The discreet rise of muslim conversions…

Translation: he conversions of Muslims in France to Christianity is a subterranean river only now emerging onto the surface. The Catholic Church says little about the subject except that several hundred people raised as Muslims are baptised every year. An estimated 10,000 ex-Muslims have now converted to Christianity in France, about two thirds of them to Catholicism. The numbers have been rising every year according to the Catholic Association Notre Dame de Kabylie. The reason for the relative silence is due to very heavy family and community pressure.
To lend mutual support to these ex-Muslims a Protestant prayer group called ‘Oasis’ was set up a few years ago. “Requests to take part in these prayer groups are on the increase ” states Saïd Oujibou, one of the few Muslim converts to Christianity who does not hesitate to speak out in public. Coming from a strict Islamic background he himself exerted much pressure on a sister who converted to Christianity. “One of our brothers made her rip out the pages of the Bible one by one”, he says. With his wife Fatima, who is also a former Muslim, this ‘itinerant pastor’ travels across France coordinating the Oasis network.
Malika, now a practising Christian, sighs : “All contact with my family has been broken off.” She went on to say “I haven’t rejected all aspects of Moroccan culture” she says “but only the Gospels could answer the questions that I was asking myself.”…-

  11. Visit to sick friend turns into three-day Miami ordeal for elderly motorists
    Agence France-Presse
    Saturday, June 10, 2006
Three elderly Americans spent three days driving lost around Miami until police came to their rescue yesterday. “The two women were taking turns driving, and they’ve been driving around non-stop trying to find the hotel,” said Mary Walters of the Miami-Dade Police Department. “The gentleman does have Alzheimer’s, so he didn’t even know he was lost. They were found in the car, just sitting there, in the parking lot of the gas station.” The trio, all in their early 70s and from Naples, N.Y., were visiting a sick friend, but got lost on the way back to their hotel about 13 kilometres away. They managed to tell a relative about their plight on Wednesday before their cellphone died. All three were reported to be doing well.

  12. Pat says, “The only thing that could make the Left happy would be the failure of the West in the war on terror.”
The crazy thing about their thinking–duh–is that if the West loses this war on terror, the people on the Left are likely to be the first people rounded up, incarcerated, beheaded, whatever, for their views on women (they should be feminists and have rights), on abortion (it’s pretty much a basic woman’s right and on demand), on SSM (for sure; bring it on!), on religion (ban it from the Public Square), etc., etc.
Can the Left not see this? Everything the Muslim terrorists stand for is diametrically opposed to the planks of their agendas. That’s what totally floors me. What has the Left got to gain by its opposition to the War on Terror? Why are they so virulently anti-U.S.? About the only thing standing between them and their own annihilation at the hands of these terrorists is the allied American/British/Aussie–and in Afghanistan–Canadian armies. Can’t they see this? Are they totally blind?
    What’s up?

Ontario to change rules for farmers’ markets
    By ANGELA PACIENZA
TORONTO (CP) – It began as a typical fundraiser for the Friends of Willistead – a folksy annual affair complete with friendly volunteers, freshly made sandwiches and a healthy dose of homespun charm.
It ended in a splash of bleach, a heap of spoiled egg salad and a lot of angry questions about why Ontario’s public health inspectors seem to be reading the Health Protection and Promotion Act as if it’s the riot act.
Art in the Park is an annual luncheon in Windsor, Ont., hosted by a group of senior women to raise money for the restoration of Willistead Manor – a lavish mansion built in 1906 for Edward Walker, son of the whiskey tycoon.
The ladies were preparing the food in the kitchen when the inspectors arrived and promptly declared them in violation of the act’s food premises regulation because the eggs had been cooked off-site, said Brenda Clayton, the group’s president.
First, they confiscated the sandwiches. Then they threw them in the trash. And for good measure, they doused them in bleach.
“There was a meanness there – it was not nice at all,” Clayton said from her home in Windsor, Ont. “Everybody was very upset by the whole incident. It ruined our day.”
The ladies had been boiling the eggs at home and then assembling the sandwiches on site for at least 20 years without any trouble from public health authorities, said Clayton. So why did the inspectors choose last weekend to break up the party?
Ontario Health Minister George Smitherman called the bleach incident “inappropriate and offensive,” and admitted the province’s 36 public health units have become overzealous in recent years in their application of the regulation.
Under the current law, farmers’ markets, church suppers and other service club fundraisers are lumped together with grocery stores and restaurants – and inspectors have been holding them all to the same standard, Smitherman said.
“That obviously doesn’t mesh with our common sense view of what a farmer’s market ought to be.”
Robert Chorney, executive director of Farmers’ Markets Ontario, described the problem as “36 health units interpreting the rules 36 different ways.”
Things nearly boiled over last year when about 200 protesters – one vendor among them had been fined $125 for mislabelling a jar of pickles – showed up outside health unit offices in Brockville, Ont., to complain about what they considered government harassment. …-

    Young Trudeau a cruel chameleon
By Douglas Fisher — Ottawa Sun – June 11, 2006
The new biography, Young Trudeau 1919-1944: Son of Quebec, Father of Canada (McLelland and Stewart), is as fascinating a book about politics as we have had in Canada.
Covering the first 25 years of Pierre Trudeau’s life, it is clearly a labour of love — and packed with surprises. I marvel at what authors Max and Monique Nemni have uncovered in Trudeau’s own files and wonder how all of us got the man so wrong for all those years.
I was immediately struck by some parallels between the Young Trudeau story and today’s news.
Just last week, police in Toronto arrested 17 Muslim men and accused them of plotting violent acts against national figures and institutions. In Young Trudeau, we learn that during World War II there was in Montreal a ring of French-Canadian Roman Catholics with treasonous aims similar to those alleged in Toronto. And Trudeau, later cherished by many as our greatest prime minister, was its chief planner and manifesto writer — while at the same time holding a second lieutenant’s commission in the Canadian Army reserves!
This incredible story tells how Canada’s “Abraham Lincoln” spent his formative years as a key member of this secret group called the “LX,” dedicated to organizing a revolution. Members planned to overthrow the government of Quebec, separate Quebec from Canada, and set up a French-speaking Roman Catholic republic called “Laurentie.” It was to be a “corporate” state, much like fascist Italy under Benito Mussolini.

  17. Damn Pickle Police! So the food gestapo in Ontario do their inspections carrying jugs of bleach? That sounds like they knew what they would find and were just trying to get their jollies instead of explaining the rules to these people who were certainly not food professionals like restaurant or grocery workers.

  19. new kid,
I share your frustration so OK,I’ll bite.
First of all, from what I have witnessed on this site, the vast majority of lefties HATE the U.S. and define themselves PRIMARILY as NOT American!Look at any politically correct culture and you’ll see there are always exceptions to the tolerance/be nice rules. Here in Canada, for example,it is acceptable to ridicule Americans,Conservatives and Christians(the MSM probably won’t take notice unless you slag one of their icons).
As a matter of opinion,I believe many lefties would rather”appear”to support terrorists than dare credit the U.S. with ANYTHING positive. The worst ones have actually made it part of who they are, working it in on ANY topic.Think about it,it does sound like some type of mental ailment.
To your other main point, yes I believe they are that naive. How else do you describe what we have all witnessed this past week. It’s as if only caucasions should be held accountable for their actions, natives and muslims have NO social responsibilities. This liberal mindset still entrenched in Ontario is indeed disturbing to witness in action…After all, what kind of a chickensh*t strategy for dealing with violent behavior is:…Don’t worry,be happy,…or…Maybe if we pretend we are not home, they’ll go away!?
Anyways, with the constant years of soothing words from the liberal power bases in this country, the hard-core lefties visiting here will NEVER even consider that they could be wrong! You see, they’ve been reinforced how to think for so long they CANNOT,in most cases, think for themselves! That is why I consider dancing in endless circles with easily identifiable trolls to be an utter waste of time.
Let’s be honest here, you have debated many a leftie on this site, and done well by my POV.BUT,for all this endless back-and-forthing,they have yet to be able to articulate to you WHY!
    You finished with “What’s up?”
Well,if they haven’t been able to explain their reasons for such thinking to you YET,maybe the fact is they were NEVER really trying to!(They do seem to love dancing so!)
So,as stunning as it may seem to you and I,I have come to believe the self-described leftie seems quite happy to pretend all the bad in the world will go away if the U.S. would just stop being a big mean bully!…Which means that must have been american-style confusion you were experiencing! LOL

  21. Thanks, Canadian Observer, for your observations. I think you’re right. My question may have been rhetorical but I’m grateful you gave it a shot!
Thanks for the pat on the back vis a vis my duelling with the trolls. I actually try very hard not to engage them, now that I’m aware that the endless, and continually getting smaller, concentric circles they’re going in (with one foot nailed to the floor, I swear) lead ABSOLUTELY nowhere.
I think another aspect to the problem of this mindset is a commitment to no thinking, zero thinking. They just say whatever leftie claptrap comes into their minds at any given time. This particular freight train is speeding down the track towards us, and it scares me to think what things are going to look like in a few years time.
It’s bad enough now, but at least we have a few articulate and thoughtful (as in ABLE TO THINK) people around who benefitted from an education BT, that’s Before Trudeau. AT, it’s all smoke and mirrors and, hey, if it sounds good, it’ll do. It doesn’t have to mean a thing, it just has to sound good.

  22. The Left love America more than the Right. The proof is that when America is loathed in the world the Left as sad and angry because we know the majority of Americans are not represented well internationally by their foreign policy. We are sad that a great nation can allow itself to be so violently wrong. We are sad that it will take years for them to recover the respect that ordinarily they deserve. We are sad at the constant misuse of great soldiers and officers. We are sad that so many were tortured or otherwise mistreated by a failed American policy. We are sad that after all the effort and money America has spent it will not achieve what they hoped it would…an end to terror. We are sad that the policy of fighting them over there rather than fighting them over here has failed. We are fighting them everywhere.
It is in no way a sign of anti-Americanism to show anger at their present failed policy it means the opposite.
I think to watch a neighbour take a bad road and NOT tell them, THAT signifies disinterest or hate more than than those of us who criticize.
Five years later most of us still don’t know why two countries and over 50 million people had to placed in the middle of a neverending war. No, it is not a good enough excuse to say they took down the two towers and 3000 Americans were killed. There is no logic or sense to that explanation. Al-Queda, a terror group took down the two towers. Does that then mean that Afghanistan, the entire country has to be invaded? Does that mean that Iraq has to be invaded also, because …well, depending on when you asked the question the answer would change. So frankly, we don’t know. Tens of thousands are killed. Many tens of thousands more injured. This war shows no signs of abateing anytime soon. We can only imagine in our craziest nightmare how and when this will end for the victim populations of these two wartorn countries. Millions living in warlike chaos and insecurity because a terror group took down two towers killing 3 thousand.

  23. “…it’s all smoke and mirrors and, hey, if it sounds good, it’ll do. It doesn’t have to mean a thing, it just has to sound good.”

  25. ‘Anyone read the item on Neale News which suggests that in order to avoid being raped, it might be a good idea for women to drink less? The feminists are in a rage over this. Women should be able to drink and not be raped.
Well, that’s a no-brainer. But, suggesting that women not be so inebriated that they have no defences against a would-be rapist or that their inhibitions become shot to Hell seems not only reasonable to me but compassionate as well. It’s advice I’d gladly give my daughters and feel that I was doing them a favour.
What is it about these flimsy, hyper-sensitive feminists that they have to insist that women MUST be able to do anything they want, like drink to the point of being out of control, but insisting that other people–that is, the would-be rapist– be responsible for NOT assaulting THEM?
Here it is again: Who me? It’s not my fault. I didn’t do anything. Don’t blame me; it’s his fault.
Well, if a woman makes a decision to drink alcohol to the point of inebriation and not being able to make rational decisions, she should hardly be blaming the guy who takes advantage of her. It takes two to tango. If you don’t want to tango, ladies, say no to that fifth cooler.

  26. Voy Forums. Rumour? ….
Just went down to the Frontier (Caledonia) this Saturday night. Just blew my mind what I found out. We are led to believe this about a land clam dating back to the 1841’s. Wrong!!

That’s right, this dispute is about a casino!!
Since Hill did not get the land, he is going to steal it. He brought up two women from the NY reserve, one being Jameson , these two started this protest. Then, Hill brought in Mohawk Warriors from the US, some with Army experience, the leader is (you are not going to believe this) an ex-navy Seal!! At the present, this ex navy Seal is fortifying the land, conducting weapons training with automatic guns (gun registry??) building Bailey Bridges over the RR tracks, cutting trails in the woods for quick escape by atv. Chainsaws are going all night cutting roads in the woods. Gunfire in the daytime. These thugs have gone to some of the residents telling them to leave their houses. These thugs are paid by Hill.
