The Inability to Think Beyond Stage One

SDA regular ‘Larry’ posted something very interesting yesterday. His second link pointed to this:

Governor Noem appears to have a troll named Roseanna Renaud absolutely obsessed with her. Looking through her tweets, Ms. Renaud, is also obsessed with Covid deaths. In any case, she accused Noem of being a “super spreader” citing various facts including that 218 South Dakotans have died from Covid-19 to date. With the state’s estimated population of 858,469, that’s 0.025%. The breakdown by age is as follows:

  • 0 – 29: 2
  • 30 – 39: 7
  • 40 – 49: 10
  • 50 – 59: 22
  • 60 – 69: 32
  • 70 – 79: 38
  • 80+ : 107

One astute commenter challenged Renaud: “Are you seriously going to strip people of their rights, isolate an entire population, and cause irreparable damage to the economy over 218 deaths? All for what? Eventually we have to open up again, and when we do, there will be deaths. Doesn’t matter if it’s tomorrow or in 2022.”

She retorted: “Every single one of those 218 people mattered. You’ve shown your true colors.”  Such simplistic thinking.  This is the kind of comeback a 5 year old child has on a playground.

You can read the responses here.  This is a clear example of the divide between people who think purely through emotions and those who use logic and are able to view the bigger picture.  Will it ever be possible to get pure emotion-based people beyond the mental trap they’re in?

  1. As for the troll…”plant based chef” pretty much sums up the level of moonbatery we’re dealing with.

  2. No.

Nobody expects much insight or logical thinking from a dog. The most one expects from most dogs is that they not relieve themselves indoors, not steal food from humans or try to eat garbage, not bite humans or other dogs, and understand and promptly obey basic commands from their masters (sit, stay, lie down, heel, quiet, go to bed).

That’s what people like this are like. The best one can hope to do is train them, with appropriate rewards and punishments, to be model inmates in a closed institution such as a prison or mental institution. Left to their own devices, they will be never be more than an annoyance at best and a danger at worst.

Renaud is not going to change, so the best that anybody could do is for Twitter to delete her account and stop rewarding her for being obnoxious.

  3. BC Population – 5.1 million
    BC Covid Deaths – 230
    Rate – 0.0045% or 4.5 per 10,000
Today bylaw officers in BC showed up at soccer games, allowed under BC’s Covid regs, and told us sure, the kids could play, but parents had to stay in their cars in the parking lot. I can’t make this shit up.

    1. Growing up in Vancouver, the tiny number of deaths per the population size is MIND BOGGLING TO ME as to why they will not re-open to any significant degree.

  4. “Economics in One Lesson” ~ Henry Hazlitt
Teaches that economic policy must be made taking into account the effect of the policy on ALL groups, not just how a single group is affected.

Similarly, emotional thinkers are people obsessed with a single idea. This Renaud crazy looks at COVID and nothing else. 1 death is too many. She has not the width of perception to know that COVID policies have negative effects in other areas, that also must be weighed. She chooses simply to ignore those effects. 10,000 can die due to lack of exercise, which is ignored for the ten who die from COVID.

Will it ever be possible to get pure emotion-based people beyond the mental trap they’re in?
If she learns to widen her perspective, then yes. Maybe teach basic economics in school. It could even be used to replace Critical Race Theory!

  5. ” Will it ever be possible to get pure emotion-based people beyond the mental trap they’re in?”

Let’s hope not. The world needs losers in every transaction. Emotional cripples are a perfectly deserving underclass.

  6. The problem is that these idiots scream, holler and demand action. Too many in charge do the squeaky wheel thing and give them all the grease.

  7. Let’s check the other stats, like deaths from car accidents, drug OD, stupidity….then call me in the morning.

    1. These people are the “helmet” people. Ban bicycles, tobaggans, sleds, trampolines, wear helmets everywhere else, bubble-wrap everything, speed limits cut in half. Safety first! In order to have a long life you can’t have an interesting life. Because “every life is precious.” Stay inside! Don’t go anywhere! Did someone just cough? Run for your lives!

      1. Chris, everyday there is another idiot out there to be heard from. These freaking fools are citing deaths as if virus deaths were somehow more import than the usual deaths in America, about 8,000 a day die from all causes with a population of about 340 million. The same is happening in Canada and about 732 people die everyday in Canada according to some out dated statscan numbers. The deaths from the whu who flu, while tragic for the families of those people, is not going to destroy Canada any more than the daily 732 deaths from all causes. We have become a nation of idiots.

  8. “This is the kind of comeback a 5 year old child has on a playground.”

Also used gun grabbers, dog breed banners and those supporting more restrictions on drivers.

  9. I talked to a dentist last week who was furious about this ridiculous overreaction to the Wuhan flu. He made his point this way:

“Do you know anyone who has died from covid?”
    Nope
“Do you even know anyone who had covid?
    Nope
“Does anyone in your family or circle of friends know anyone?”
    Don’t think so.
“Now, in the last six months how many people that you know died from cancer?”

    1. I will not ask about your dentist’s details but I wonder if we don’t go to the same dentist? By any chance a female, very slim, blond, the office close to a major car factory? The reason I ask is because I heard the same from my dentist.

  10. Kristi Noem or Tatianna Turner? Melania Trump or Hillary Clinton? There is a certain je ne sais quoi about conservative women vs the other ones. Can’t quite put my finger on it.

  11. Fear reigns supreme in one of the least affected areas of the world: Vancouver Island. 840,000 people and three… count’em, three active cases. Yet our largest mall just announced mandatory masking and personal temperature taking before admittance. Chief medical officer St. Bonnie Henry for political reasons, just changed social distancing IN SCHOOLS to one meter, rather than two.

So if you want to buy a pair of socks, bring your mask, have your temperature taken, answer a few ridiculous personal questions and then be let into a store a few customers at a time where you’ll be greeted by staff in masks, standing behind plexiglass barriers.

Oh, the joy. I don’t know how many times I’ve told people that I’m not required to live my life to the level of their fears.

  12. I know it sounds bad but at some point in time there will be an accounting for those who stole liberty to exercise control, power and authority.
But you reap what you sow.

    1. No.
      That sounds good.
What is bad is that I don’t believe any kind of accounting is coming for the foreseeable future.

      1. Chris I agree. In fact we won’t take a stand against the idiocy we are being exposed to while being treated as inmates in our own asylum. Step lively now to the latest check point and get government approval to continue breathing.

    2. Disagree. Despite a mountain of evidence against CAGW, nobody has been held to account for the Great Global Warming Swindle.
The best I can hope for is that both the COVID19 and the CAGW power grabs end some day soon.

  13. “This is a clear example of the divide between people who think purely through emotions and those who use logic and are able to view the bigger picture. “

You mean like people who think that being asked to wear a mask indoors in public places where possible because logic combined with the evidence shows it works is exactly the same thing as shutting people’s businesses down, which doesn’t seem to bring any significant added benefit?

Japan did mask mandates which were almost universally complied with, and few shutdowns and had 16 COVID deaths per million population, the USA and Sweden took other approaches and both had over 600 COVID deaths per million population. There is a simple answer, which is supported by the science, that is resisted by people who think with their emotions rather than facts and logic. An answer that could significantly shorten this mess we are in. Just because you are comfortable with early deaths among those over 60, well actually over 50, it doesn’t necessarily follow that you are following logic as applied to the facts, it’s just a way to let you sleep at night.

Another fact that should be logically taken into account by anybody who purports to think rationally is that the pandemic is not finished in South Dakota, and so those numbers are not final in any sense of the term. Let’s look at them next June and God willing, you can gloat then. Nothing would make me happier than if you guys were able to gloat after the coming flu season ends. The smart money is not betting that way though.

    1. Oh look, fear and panic porn Tim in Vermont is back!!!!!! Heed his warnings, or you will have a 0.006% chance of dying from COVID!!!!!

I am so glad when stupid people try to troll.

  14. OK, I’m a resident of a small town in coastal BC, north of Lotusland called Powell River, and have a view of Van Isle from my home. My daughter lives in Nanaimo on Van Isle. My little town has the plexiglass, the masked wallymart, and the odd idiot bathing in disinfectant, and others jogging in deserted areas alone, with masks on. So yeah we have our share of the idiots. Personally, apart from avoiding wallymart, I have not changed my lifestyle one iota, and apart from a few stares, with no Karen beratings, for not wearing a mask. I haven’t been out of town since last Christmas, and there is a small outbreak in a reserve a few kliks north of town. I have not witnessed any, I repeat, any, people being cited, charged, fined, or “coerced” due to the Covid crap. All seems exceeding close to normal, and I know of no Provincial, or Municipal demands of stupidity or excessive control. Except for the plexiglass and masks, all seems normal, yet what I hear, see online, and can glean from other sources, do I live in the only rational town in Canada! Am I oblivious and blind, or is this place an exception to the mindless idiocy happening elsewhere? Just asking for a friend.

    1. GerryK What you describe is similar to what I have experienced here in Kelowna.
I don’t shop much other than groceries, but I was at Costco and no one got on me for not wearing a mask. Same at the grocery and liquor stores. About 30 percent are wearing masks wherever I go. Mask wearers often look afraid, though, which is sad, especially when they are young and healthy looking.

  15. No mandatory mask wearing in Okotoks except in municipal buildings. Businesses can apply their own mask wearing preferences. Only Walmart has the mandatory mask edict, which is company wide. No one to enforce the rule either. Saw about 1 dozen people without masks in the store last Friday. Mostly farmers and ranchers and 2 younger females. Not a Karen is sight.
