Lest We Forget

Last year I had the great honour to stand on the shores of Juno Beach in the Normandy region of France for the 75th Anniversary of D-Day. Much has happened in our world since that tranquil day.

  1. A number of years ago when I was stationed in Europe, I visited my uncle’s grave a couple of times in Holland. He was shot down in 1943. Sad to see what our country has become after the sacrifices of so many brave young men.

  2. Oh, don’t worry, PM SFB, Peking Man, Black Man, Everybody With a Beef Man….forgot, along with millions of others. If you’re Old Stock White WW2 survivorman….fugeddaboudit, they ask for too much.

  3. May the ones who bravely fought and died R.I.P.
    “They lived,
    Felt dawn,
    Saw sunset glow,
    Loved, and
    Were loved…”

    P.S.
Hats off to Steve E — a contributor of SDA, his son belonged to the
Youth Band from Burlington Ontario, featured in above photo.

  4. Robert, my son was there in that band–tall skinny trombone player. The whole trip was transforming for most of those kids. The most emotional moment for my son came when he visited the gravesite of a soldier who fell in the assault. Before they left for France, each kid had been assigned a soldier who had fallen. They researched the soldier’s life and wrote a short piece about him. It made the experience very personal.

Nancy beat me to it I see. Thank you Nancy.

      1. Sadly, the band hasn’t played since the onset of COVD-19. My son has since retired from the band but he still has friends there.

        1. Steve, someone contacted me who was in Europe for the D Day Anniversary a few years ago at the time when your son was there. He would like to provide you with some photos of the Burlington Marching Band that he took. Would you be interested in receiving them? We can make arrangements through this website, if you’d like. Please reply here.

  5. We villainized our heroes and are now a society of anti-heroes, but well heeled and protected establishment ones.

  6. These men walked on the beaches in the face of extreme firepower, thousands died and we honour them by running and hiding because the government says so, if it only saves one life. What a sad commentary on Canada today. Quick put on your mask, someone, maybe you, might die. My disgust cannot be measured. Those who are afraid to die are afraid to live.

    1. Except now that they are trying to organize riots social distancing doesn’t matter any more. If anyone doesn’t realize they they have been conned yet, they must be pretty thick.

    2. “These men walked on the beaches in the face of extreme firepower, thousands died and we honour them by running and hiding because the government says so”

The men of that generation were unquestionably obedient to the government of that day.

      1. Oz, if you can’t see the difference there is no freaking hope for you.

  7. Many of these men were no older than the useless mouth-breathers throwing bricks at shops right now.

These men then went home and started new lives after stopping true enemies of freedom and security.

    We let them down.

  8. “These men then went home and started new lives after stopping true enemies of freedom and security.”

When did they fight hordes of Red Army savages — true enemies of freedom and security?

  9. By his end,my father referred to his service as “5 wasted years. And concluded with the observation that both he and the Germans they fought, had shot the wrong people.”
Every promise of the Nazis, which prompted him to volunteer,we brought home and imposed on ourselves.
We have created the Over State, the secret police and the citizens informing on each other,Slavery of the citizen and State control of business.
I respect those men, mere boys at the time, who fought for our freedoms,I am appalled by what we did with the gift they gave us.
Now as we wallow in virtue signalling and racial worship, I wonder whether Dad would laugh or cry?

It is uncanny how these madnesses repeat in our history,Gang green and the “Love of Nature is tied most intimately to the love of the Fatherland”.
Eugenics and The soft racism of low expectations toward citizens with darker skins.
And the Global Governance…Differs from the 3rd Reich how?
They all want to feast on workers bones and rule without responsibility.
    Same fools and bandits,different year.

  10. John, my Dad was one of the fortunate ones. I have photo of him in uniform at Petawawa in the snow. He never told me what he did but he never left Canada and never called himself a veteran, even though the legion, of which he was not member, gave him an honour guard funeral procession and kept his body in their crypt until the ground thawed and he could be buried. He once said he had pneumonia and that kept him home. OK. My Dad would not laugh or cry, he would be extremely angry.

  11. Without putting a number on I am a senior baby-boomer. The men of my family that were old enough served in (my father) RCNVR and my uncle the Army. I do not recall much about WWII being taught during my years in school. Fortunately I had living relatives to teach me. As its the lefties who control schools I hate to think what kids are being taught.

  12. OWG… thank you. After reading Kate’s blog every day since it started nearly 20 years ago, this is the first time I have posted. What you said pushed me over the edge. I too am an OWG who a few years ago, walked those beaches, went through the tunnels of Vimy, walked the graveyards and felt the genuine love and appreciation of many of the French people of the areas for what was accomplished. My total and utter disgust for what is going on today is not measurable.

Not one so called leader (federal, provincial, municipal or medical) we have today is worthy to empty the bed pan of those who were wounded or carry the body or the parts of those who fell.

I weep for the next generations, my kids and grandchildren, some but not all of whom have fallen into the traps that have been set that will enslave them all, in the name of “wokeness”.

    1. How sad that this riot and damages to the city of London has now reached Britain. Those people don’t seem to know that they are there, living in peace, because the World War II soldiers made the ultimate sacrifice and fought for their freedom.

      Pity their stupidity.
