An SDA regular was looking to buy some beer in Ontario. His search revealed something very interesting. Note the small print on blue background at the top. How come the beer brewed in Canada is so much more expensive than that made in and shipped from America?

Blame your government. Excise taxes, SIN taxes…which are MUCH higher than those in the US. Additionally, your provinces want a “taste” of the action so they set up monopolistic government agencies that set the minimum price amounts on Canadian brewed beers (all beers, not just those with an American brand name). Then there are the containers (which are higher due to tariffs on raw materials)….but don’t forget the “Green policies” that make use of these raw materials even more expensive.
As it is … the sin taxes and bottle return tax have put me off beer entirely here in CA … which is really quite like Canada. No, I’m not paying $15.00 for a six pack
PS … it’s Kirin when you’re beerin… GO ichiban Japan! Leading Brazil 1-0 at the half
That was a joke of a sales pitch my friend – the advertising copyrighter – used to quote when we were drinking beers.

All booze up!
The “elbows up” campaign was unnecessary. Trump hurt Americans with his trade policies far more than Canadians ever could. It was the economic equivalent of stepping on a rake.
Stepping on a rake was the right move for Thomas Hogarth, but the rest of us should think twice.
Like Hogarth’s Rake, we may all be in Bedlam.
As for Miller beer, I wouldn’t drink that swill even if it was free.
Exactly. The donkey piss that made Milwaukee famous.
Well, the vast majority of Canadians drink either Bud Light or Coors Light.
Miller Lite can’t be any worse.
The real question is how cheaply can Canadians buy Tsingtao beer?

Pronounced … Ching Dao … to all the Punjabi-speakers in Canada
Ridiculous comment. Trumps trade policies put Canada out of the running.
I wasn’t talking about what Trump is doing to Canada. I was talking about what Trump is doing to America. Tariffs hurt the country that implements them as well as the country they’re aimed at.
An immediate example of that is the current aluminum shortage in the US, which is sending prices through the roof. Those shortages are caused by a combination of the Iran conflict and tariffs against Canadian aluminum.
” Tariffs hurt the country that implements them as well as the country they’re aimed at.”
That one’s a keeper.
This is a new level of inanity even for a TDS-afflicted rodent like you.
No need to take my word for it. Instead take the words of Friedman, Sowell, and Williams:

We’re in the odd time where alleged conservatives support higher taxes and economic restrictions. Next they’ll be wearing Che Guevara t shirts.
From Yahoo Finance: According to Statistics Canada, the Canadian median income was $68,400 CAD, whereas, the US median income was $70,784 USD, according to the US Census. It doesn’t look like a massive difference but keep conversion rates in mind — $68,400 CAD is equal to $50,348 in USD. So Canadian is 50KUSD and United States is 70KUSD.
Ohhhhhhhh mommmaaaaa …

True conservatives can count.
You consistently confuse the stock market with the economy.
One of Trump’s main campaign planks was that he would bring down inflation “on day one.” Instead he brought in widespread tariffs that drove up prices, pretty much guaranteeing that inflation would stay above the federal reserve’s target of 2%:
https://www.federalreserve.gov/economy-at-a-glance-inflation-pce.htm
His reward is a midterm election where the key issue is affordability:

Yeah … the stock market operates completely independent of the economy. Unh huh …
Dude … you appear stuck back in the Clinton dot.con stock market when companies no longer needed to make a profit … or even have a product for sale … for their values to balloon.
Nope. The Wall Street stock market is all about profits … and actually selling products and services the main market needs and wants. And we’re buying at a very healthy pace
I didn’t say it was completely independent. Don’t put words in my mouth.
But they are not equivalent.
Most of the US stock market’s rise over the last 18 months is due to AI stocks, notably the Magnificent Seven. Also, the One Big Beautiful Bill entrenched previous temporary corporate tax cuts. That removed the risk that these tax cuts would lapse, and thus increased the value of companies to shareholders.
In short, rising share prices do not necessarily mean the economy is doing great.
” Trump hurt Americans with his trade policies far more than Canadians ever could. ”
Uh-huh:

In 2026, the U.S. economy is outperforming Canada’s, with U.S. GDP growth projected just over 2% compared to Canada’s sluggish 0.7% to 1.5%. Canada faces structural challenges including a chronic productivity and business investment gap, lingering trade uncertainty, and a softer labor market.

Keep trying.
Once again, you unerringly miss the point.
I’m not saying that US tariffs against Canada hurt Americans more than Canadians. They likely don’t. But they DO … HURT … AMERICANS.
Oh that OUR economy should hurt so bad.
I’m not “hurt” in the least … and in-fact did quite a bit of Amazon Prime Day(s) Christmas shopping last week. Got some GREAT deals on … ohhhhhhhhhh mommmaaaaaaa … tariffed goods. LOL at your terminal TDS

I’m not talking about Canada versus the US. I’m talking about the fact that tariffs hurt Americans period.
Again. The ONLY thing that hurts me is California’s RIDICULOUSLY HIGH gasoline prices. But I don’t drive that much … so … meh. Now do my property taxes, bridge tolls, etc.
C’mon people, Miller Genuine Draft is not a beer.
“How come the beer brewed in Canada is so much more expensive than that made in and shipped from America?”
Because everything in Canada, whether it moves or sits still, is taxed -way- more than the exact same thing in the USA. Transport, labor, ingredients, business tax, fuel… At every step of the manufacturing and distributing chain, not just once.
Meaning, if you make things outside of Canada, even though there’s duty on it when it crosses the border, it’s still cheaper than we can make it here. Usually 20% cheaper, at least. And that’s why nothing is made here.
Then there’s the fact that Molson/Coors USA probably spills more beer in a year than the total amount we make in Canada. Economy of scale is a thing, right?
Probably the same reason I can have junk shipped from China with less of a packing/shipping/handling cost than me sending that same junk to my mom a few hours away – in the same box.
Negra Modelo. $20 a twelver. Thank you, USMCA.
Sorry … I meant to say I won’t pay $20/6-pack of beer … see … it’s been THAT long since I bought ANY beer whatsoever. I do what all reasonable consumers do … boycott overpriced products. Don’t need em. Don’t care. Buh bye beer companies … Buh bye CA taxes.
Do you suppose the US beer and price is still up on the LCBO site because of an oversight, or, does someone just want to rub it in?
Probably because they have a warehouse somewhere full of the stuff that they can’t sell for political reasons.
The beer store is offering a 6 pack of Molson Miller Genuine draft at $19.23 for 473ml cans versus LickBo offering the bottles at $16.25 for 355ml.
Never mind that Molson Coors is a mostly US company now
Multi-culti … Multi-National corporations. We are the world … we are the children. Well TBF … Michael Jackson liked children quite too much … and acted like one too.
No. We are NOT all the world.

Coming right up for the CBC consuming Elbows Up But Trump crowd – empty rooms taxes. Shared misery.

For the same reason that if you want cheap Canadian booze, you buy it in the US. Taxes. And tax on tax. Elevator taxes that never go down.
