Absolutely nailed it Kenji. This is what I’ve been noticing and discussing with friends. Back in the day, bullying was self-policing among the kids. If you got outside of the lines too far in terms of being too weird/queer/bizarre you got bullied…kept everyone in line. And fights solved problems because there were consequences, I.e. a punch to face, etc.
School yard/ground diplomacy worked.

Having special needs people working for a family business is hardly mainstreaming them. Allowing them to work to the extent of their abilities isn’t the problem.

The problem lies in what we allow our children, and those who aren’t capable of adult decision making (and quite apparently some who do but choose not to use it) to get into online — which is the new society that we have created, and every society has its snares.
I wasn’t speaking about ‘working’ in the family business. I was more referring to mainstreaming a special needs child … who wears a preteen girl’s My Little Pony backpack … into the adolescent jungle known as HS.
And let’s be clear, there are a wide variety of the degrees of autism. Yet an adult obsession over preteen fantasy appears to be approaching an extreme end of anti-social autistic behavior.
The penchant for autistic people to become obsessively hyperfocused on something is well documented. In and of itself it isn’t alarming, but it does have to be channeled into productive outlets.
The Brony phenomenon was/is a well documented troll that started on internet forum boards. Of itself it’s just odd, but everyone has their quirks. What is of note is how social trends can be shaped by social media and later exploited by groups. That’s where the real issue is, not the trend itself. This ties in to what I just said about autistic people and their penchants for becoming obsessed (and their naivete when it comes to interacting with people); it also says something about what can happen to normal children if exposed to potentially dangerous online interaction.
With regards to bullying: we have a surfeit of bullies thanks to much of the social engineering happening in our society. We have made our societies a playground and paradise for bullies; we don’t need more. I would argue that bullying an autistic person merely drives them further into online bubbles and well, see above. What we lack now is the previous social mores/traditions whereby bullies could be confronted on an individual basis and those in society who are the natural born sheepdogs are allowed to stand up not only for themselves but for their weaker peers.
I will say it again for you and Hammy: we don’t need more bullies; we need to allow the sheepdogs to do their thing.

This pipe-bomb case is a text-book case in how to divert the attention of the ignorant. Five years of ‘investigation’ in possibly the most surveyed city in the country and the FBI couldn’t find the perp. The ‘bombs’ were supposed to be a factor in the protest, except nobody knew about them until after the protest because the ‘perp’ did not phone in the ‘threat’. How could the police be diverted from the protest if they were unaware of the ‘threat’. Another factor in the ‘mystery’ is the action of the authorities when informed of the ‘bomb’ at the DNC site. They did not set-up a cordon around the area, allowing pedestrians to walk within about thirty feet of the location.
But don’t do any critical thinking about why you are being led down the garden path by getting diverted with stories about ‘furries’ and ‘li’l Ponies’. Don’t ever sit down and think for yourselves about what has transpired over the last ten years just accept the BS you’re being fed. Unquestioned (unthinking) acceptance of authority is the greatest threat to truth.
