Dan Knight- March Massacre: Canada’s Labour Market Cracks Under Tariff Pressure
The overall picture, however, is bleak. Nationally, Canada lost 33,000 jobs in March. It wasn’t a statistical blip—it was a full reversal of a trend that saw growth through late 2024 and early 2025. Worse yet, this decline was driven almost entirely by full-time employment, which plummeted by 62,000 jobs. That’s not people losing side gigs—that’s heads of households, tradespeople, and career workers getting cut loose.
NBC- U.S. added 228,000 jobs in March, beating forecasts
The U.S. added 228,000 jobs in March, far more than the 140,000 economists had expected. Unemployment ticked up slightly to 4.2% from 4.1% the month before.

BIG ouch!
“Translation: the taxpayer-funded government class is fine, but the actual wealth producers are getting culled.”
Hiring government workers is not, nor ever will be, job creation. Lieberals and Dippers are more concerned with hiring voters and maintaining power than the actual well being of the country.
Government “workers” should be counted as negative jobs. Not only must they be paid to “work”, but the “work” they do is often to the detriment of actual workers.
I would argue that in the calculation of employment statistics, each government “job” should not only negate an actual job, but perhaps two or more.
Government jobs should be calculated in Private sector taxes paid equivalent.
For example, the Prime Minister makes $406,000 per year. The average Canadian Salary was ~$73,799 per year in 2024 according to Stats Canada, and the after tax average was $54,911, for an average tax payment of $18,888.
This means that to pay the Prime Minister, it consumes the tax output of 21.5 Canadians working in the private sector.
the only winners over the last 10 years were civil servants who continued to get their unearned wage increases
Canada is not a legitimate country. It is a colonial patriarchal white settler state on stolen native land. So why should we care what happens to it?
Nice sarcasm there, but will it be properly appreciated? Many Canadian’s delicate sensitivivities have been under a bit of pressure lately.
Conveniently, the Canadian Mainstream Media has so many other things to talk about meaning, “Trump” and “Trump tariffs”,,, that they don’t have to talk about job loses before Trump’s tariffs under the Liberal government or the ChiCom retaliatory tariffs against Canadian ag and fisherman.
(actually it’s not just CMM, it’s all the small city Media too)
Big full-time job losses mean a deeper recession. This along with the preceding Trudeau-induced depression usually means the public is wanting a change in government. This is the sort of thing which crushed PMs RB Bennett in 1935, Joe Clark in 1979, Pierre Trudeau in 1984, Kim Campbell in 1993. There’s never been any exceptions to this. When people lose their jobs by the thousands, they want to toss out the MOFOs in government responsible.
Your comments are the only ones worth reading anymore. Evn over the articles, far as I’m concerned.
What about the Carney effect? Does a chamge in leadership change the minds of voters in Ontario? What is your opinion?
The polls are pretty clear that those minds are changed at least above the age of 55.
Carney is now claiming that he prevented the 2008 recession from affecting Canadians, despite previously testifying that Canada was in recession. Maybe it was one of those Biden Recessions?
Kinda picking and choosing there. Harper got through 2009. I know that wasn’t his fault but that’s besides your point.
The more salient issue is that The Carney Liberals have their support primarily in the 55+ year old cohort and many of those people aren’t worried about jobs on account of being retired.
The U.S. added 228,000 jobs in March, far more than the 140,000 economists had expected. Unemployment ticked up slightly to 4.2% from 4.1% the month before.

Considering all the bureaucratic positions eliminated down in DC and Northern Virginia…this is remarkable.
The reversal will be even more remarkable, and extremely brutal.
the Carney causes job losses.
And stats Canada seems to be playing fast and loose with the numbers:
“Employment decreased by 33,000 (-0.2%) in March, the first decrease since January 2022. The decline in March followed little change in February and three consecutive months of growth in November, December and January totalling 211,000 (+1.0%).”

Meh. I dunno.
The people that live in this place don’t seem too concerned about jobs, or even money.
Voters here have demonstrated this time and again; maybe when the canadian dollar goes below forty cents US and their government cheques aren’t going very far, they might get concerned, but too late…
oh, the NDP-Liberal coalition will just double the size of the checks. They won’t abandon their loyal voters, who always have their hands out for more.
Reality has a tendency to change perspectives. A lot of Canadisns may have to stop voting for a living and start working for a living.
UnHuman nice and quiet, $CDN down over a percent today, Canadian economy cratering in real time, or more realistically, market is showing what has been happening for a few months, all at once.
Has anyone told Ford to stfu?
The Liberal plan is UBI. Bank on it. They don’t care about your jobs.
Printing money based on the WEF framework, of which Marx is a disciple, is the plan.
If Canada tries to print their way to prosperity, I want to be the first to buy a Canadian $10,000,000,000,000 dollar bill.
That oughta set me back $8.57 US.
Geez! I had no idea I was so rich! A single one-ounce silver coin can procure $50,000,000,000,000!!!
And let’s just say that I have more than one 1-oz silver coin! 😉
It’s a race to zero tariffs.
Other countries see this and are dropping tariffs to ensure trade with the USA.
Canada is going to increase tariffs which means the low tariff countries will be eating our lunch and taking our US market share.
Canadian politicians are either too dumb to see that or are deliberately inflaming the tariff issue as an election strategy.
How about it’s both. Carney’s Caretaker Government is spending money in the US to advertise “Tarriffs are a tax…” while also inflicting Tariffs on Canadians.
Do canuckistanians actually know what a tariff really means?
Allow me to explain to these ignorant seniors who know nothing about the economy.
A tariff is “a tax on imports” from the designated country.
Which means that a U.S. tariff on Canadian Lumber, for example, would mean that U.S. IMPORTERS would be taxed on all imported Canadian Lumber.
The impact on Canadian imports is not felt directly by Canadian Businesses — at least not until the government decides to set up reciprocal tariffs against the U.S, which will have to be paid by CANADIAN importers.
Talking about cutting off your nose to spite your face; This country is so Fked.
Israel dropped all the tariffs on Tuesday and got hammered with ‘reciprocals’ on Wednesday. The only race to zero tariffs is going on in the non-American world. There’s not going to be much US market to share in a couple years.
Liberals will never refuse an opportunity to increase the pain they inflict on Canadian Tax Payers.
These are the same Liberals who “Cancelled” the GST.
Same bunch who promised to “Payback” the money stolen during Adscam.
Same bunch that just worked over every Canadian of modest means, concerned about Capitol Gains..
Ottawa imposes tariffs on Canadians with great glee.
Can’t cure stupid…seems plenty of Canadian Intellectuals will still vote Liberal.
I use that term,very loosely.
The Canadian Edumucation system produces a very interesting product.
Sadly.. Trump just needs to harass us into a recession.. Without doing anything.. A master class PSYOP.. If we call him on that.. He will hit us with real tariffs.. Are we understanding yet?…
I understand that there’s no point in negotiating with Trump and never has been. Look over there! It’s China! And Europe and Japan and Asia! Let’s trade with them.
Uhhhh, 100% tariffs on Chinese EV’s, gonna make that hard. Take those off and the feds and blubber Dougie’s investments in battery plants and such look even worse. The Government of Canada is a collection of the stupidest most useless humans alive, Fat Dougie Ford: “hold my 24.”
“Uhhhh, 100% tariffs on Chinese EV’s, gonna make that hard.”
I have a solution for that: get rid of the tariffs!
