    “The company said the blast furnaces were “no longer financially sustainable” due to tough market conditions, the imposition of tariffs and higher environmental costs.
    The BBC understands British Steel was expecting a £1bn injection of government money to keep the business going, but was offered £500m.
    The Prime Minister’s official spokesperson said the government had made a “generous offer” to British Steel and it would continue to work with the company and its Chinese owner Jingye to secure its future.”

  2. From memory, Canada isn’t far behind, as we are down to about 1 blast furnace capable of producing virgin steel from Iron Ore, after Trudeau subsidized the conversion of the other 2 from Blast Furnaces to Electric Arc furnaces for environmental reasons.

    Never mind that Canada exports almost all of it’s iron ore (58.2Megatonnes exported of 59.4Megatonnes produced) for processing into steel elsewhere, while also importing 8.2 Million Tonnes of iron ore for processing into steel.

  10. Putting tariffs on Chinese steel doesn’t work. Just outlaw steel from China and outlaw steel from any country that permits 1 ounce of Chinese steel imports. China is at war with us and we are too effing stupid to see it. China’s strategy is to eliminate the world steel industry along with complete industrialization of the west. Wars are won by heavy industry. In 30 years when China attacks us we can throw Big Macs at them.

  11. You can’t just go back a year or two later and turn the power back on and start up production again.
    Once boilers are turned off they rust out and they’re scrap.

    1. Mothballed plants require constant maintenance to keep them nominally operational, and require a set up period to reactivate them. Even lumber mills require a lot of work to start them back up after years of inactivity, and those tend to be far more simple than steel refineries.

    1. After WWII, Britain was normal, but went all weird by the 1980s. Then they elected Tony Blair and their fate is now sealed.

      I fully expect to hear of some cataclysmic upheaval in the UK in the coming decades. Nothing can be ruled out.

      China has no interest in fighting a conventional war requiring the products of heavy industry like steel. They are already in a war — a hybrid war, the object of which is collapse brought on by the enemies within: in the US, primarily the DEM party.
      The non-kinetic war is fought by The United Front Works Department instituted by Mao himself.

  15. For anyone that has been paying attention this is not news. This ‘redundancy’ was announced over a year ago!

    On a topic closer at hand, the upcoming election. One question to ask yourselves as you approach the polling booth, “Why do we have a government?”. If you can’t answer that question in less than two seconds then why bother voting at all! To give you a broader appreciation of that question start asking your friends and relations that question. I’ll lay ten to one odds that you’ll get more buzzer responses than you’ll get chimes. That is why we are where we are and why we are heading down the same path as most of western society.

  21. Good riddance and shame on Starmer for trying to bail them out if he indeed tried. The world has a steel overproduction problem and needs fewer furnaces not more. This is efficient capital allocation by market forces in action. Beautiful

    There can be no future high-rise construction, as rebar is no longer available.

    It is going to be fun to watch the UK re-constructing itself in the image of the 7th century.

  23. China and India are burning coal to create the energy needed to make steel.. If the UK decided to continue they would need tariffs.. In effect, forcing a more expensive product on themselves and pissing off their trading partners..

    Reaches a point where you throw in the towel.. Thank net zero for handing it all away..
