Why was Diane Francis ever hired to write for a supposedly conservative newspaper in the first place? Note that skyrocketing borrowing is not mentioned as the main problem here, but rather Republican efforts to use Debt Ceiling legislation as leverage to restrain spending.
If you don’t feel alarmed yet, just look at the horrors that Diane Francis lists. Horrors, I tell you, horrors!
Some of the Republicans are isolationists and want to use their newfound leverage to slash financial support for the Pentagon and cut military aid for Ukraine.
Legislative control seems prudent, but some Republicans are threatening not to increase the debt limit unless severe cuts are made to Social Security and Medicare.
In a liberal nutshell, debt ceiling legislation is just fine….provided that you unquestioningly raise the debt ceiling limit in perpetuity.

the Socialist Security Ponzi scheme is a sucking black hole, and shouldn’t be affected by the debt limit, if it was pay-go or pre-funded. Unfortunately there is no SS lockbox, it’s just full of IOUs.
And what has she ever conserved?
My theory is that Francis took a financial shit-kicking years ago and it permanently soured her on capitalism and all things right wing.
Everything should be on the table for cuts, as well as the eternal funding of American military bases in places such as Germany, who can afford to pay their own way, and at every step of the way have chosen to diss the USA which has acted as their protectorate since 1945.
Japan could too if they made some changes to their constitution (yes, I know they’re starting to move in that direction). How many more Euros would the European countries have to spend to bring their own militaries up to par? Which sectors of their gov’t spending would European countries choose to cut in order to make up the difference from additional military spending? Does Diane Francis have an opinion on how Europe should “figure out their military spending”?
I only know of Poland which spends above 2% of GDP on military.
The USA has heard from virtually the entirety of the world how it fights foreign wars to aid their economic view, if they were to now become non-interventionist and openly tell the rest of the world to “figure it out Pumpkin” they’d certainly feel the wrath of the world’s media for changing their view.
It is… “how could you ask such a thing” and “why didn’t you ask”. At the same time.
Diane Francis, writes for a newspaper in order to have funds to buy her lunch, pay her bills, and her newspaper is dependent upon gov’t aid to stay afloat, whose job it is to sell newspapers, not “inform you”.
The Americans will never give up Ramstein in Germany or Kadena in Japan. Those two airbases give the US global reach. And I’m pretty sure the host countries are more than happy to have them there.
Demoncrat warmongers want you to send the boys you didn’t abort off to endless wars.
“unless severe cuts are made to Social Security and Medicare” – Likely, the stupid GOP made a deal with the Dems like that: “You guys win the House next time”. I expect Trump to soon oppose this stupidity.
She has taken what seems to be a leftward tack. That said, she wrote the most epic takedown of Quebec separatism years back. I have had to reference it from memory, as the original is lost in the sands of time. In a nutshell, the fact of the Louisiana Purchase completely obliterates any claims of Anglo oppression. The sale of Louisiana was done to fund France’s wars with England. In 1803, French was the most common European language in the Mississippi watershed. About 95% of that is US territory. Today, a version of French is spoken down in the south end of the Big Muddy, and that’s it. The French remaining in English territory were accorded rights that history shows would not have been extended to Anglos if the roles were reversed. That the Louisiana Purchase did not materially change the nature of the existence of those French living under British rule in Canada completely obliterates the lies that underpin Quebec nationalism.
Of course, the vast majority – if not all – of military aid to Ukraine does NOT come out of the budget.
Don’t believe me? Look at the latest package. M101 howitzers. Those were made in ww2.
Diane Francis blows hot and cold, according to to her whims. According to her Wiki entry:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diane_Francis
she is closely connected to different universities, so her left-wing views may come from the need to establish proper woke cred at these places. She writes on business and economics, and as a retired economics professor I have always thought her technical knowledge to be superficial and light-weight.
Her dumbest utterance came a number of years ago in the Financial Post. During the moral panic over global warming and greenhouse gases, she said in a column that historically Canadian farmers have undertaken, among any group of people, the worst damage to our environment. I am not making this up. Any serious editor would have cut such a stupid comment like that. But Ms. Francis carries so much heft at the FP, that bonehead statement was published.
It’s interesting. When Communists invaded Korea and the U.S. went to their aid, the Left wanted out of the war. When Communists invaded Viet Nam and the U.S. went to their aid, the Left wanted out of the war. Now when communist Russia invades Ukraine, the Left DEMANDS that the U.S. enter the war.
What changed?
She loses the plot every once in a while.
In this column as well: https://financialpost.com/diane-francis/diane-francis-elon-musk-must-be-held-accountable-for-twitter
She argued that government should regulate free speech. This was before the twitter files showing the government doing precisely that, but in a biased manner that amounted to censorship of conservatives. She is quite the stooge.
Francis came to the National Post when Conrad Black (I believe) purchased the Financial Post and amalgamated it into the National Post.
She went through a divorce and I’m not sure she ever recovered financially. She may be a charity case at the NP? I don’t believe she is taken serious. If you follow sports her son is the light weight big mouth Eric Francis of the Calgary Flames broadcast team.
Diane Francis was not a “liberal” when she first started writing for the National Post. But that was long ago, in a galaxy far away, when Conrad Black was in control. She noticably drifted leftward, as did NP, until I stopped subscribing.
And now, no matter what she actually believes, she has been drafted into the Trudeau Tabernacle Choir, and sings the songs the payer tells the piper to play.
