  1. Why do you think no Canadian team has won the Stanley Cup in 30ish years? Taxes. Usually the winner is from an income tax free state. Florida, Nevada, Texas, Tennessee, etc.

  2. If you are a star with a big contract, why would you want to play in a blue state, let alone sign a contract with any team there.

    If the NFL is smart, they’ll put the superbowl only in states that have no income tax.

  3. Yes, that and a 72 cent dollar too.
    While the teams all receive funds in US$ for the NHL TV contract, those are a tickets make all the difference.
    Teams just sent out their season ticket notices, and the Canucks are up 10% next year.
    For a sub-standard product. Seats already expensive to go with Arena beer for 15 and slop burgers for 20.
    Greasy socialist politicians don’t care. And yes, it will be a long, long time before a Canadian team wins a cup.
    Connor McDavid is a fool.

  4. No sane millionaire wants to play in a Blue State.
    ps. Screw the Yankees, Dodgers, Knicks and Lakers.

  5. Wah, wah wah. The Montréal Canadiens are looking like the exception. Unlike Toronto et al, they are showing that smart management, great drafting and quiet patience overcomes adversity. Not this year, probably, but this is a powerhouse in the making.

  6. Let’s see, Red state cities could have Billings Rams, Sheridan Chargers, Boise SkyHawks, Sioux Falls Bears…

  7. No shot of this happening. Too much money to be made. Othani’s contract is horrible: taxes will eat half and inflation will devalue what remains.

  8. The commie-hair-cut argument applies:
    … “it’s unfair if they don’t all charge the same amount”

    Thus;
    … it’s unfair that some jurisdictions extort fewer tax dollars than others.
    Or;
    … it’s unfair that people can vote with their U-Haul.

  9. An NFL/MLB/NBA/NHL player pays income tax in every state they play in. For the NFL, it’s 1/17th of their salary (correct me if I’m wrong). But that assumes they earned 1/17th of their salary in the other state. What, they don’t get paid to PRACTICE, or attend meetings, or hit the gym in their home state?

  10. Lionel Messi was found guilty of tax fraud for failing to pay €4.1 million in taxes related to his image rights between 2007 and 2009. He was sentenced to a 21-month prison term, which was later converted to a fine.

    I’m willing to bet Messi is actually KEEPING more $$$ playing in Miami … in the gawd awful MLS … than he did in Barcelona …
