        I like the idea of the storytellers versus the characters, putting actors back in their place as secondary to the culturally significant chapters they play.

    1. I own 3 FWD manuals and recently sold a 4th. I have 2 5’s and a 4 speed.

      Changing the clutch in a FWD is a pain.

      Always found them to be great in the snow or icy highways.

A variety of ancient domestic Chevs, a 65 Olds F-85, 74 VW Westfalia camper w pop-top (orange of course) and we drove it to Yellowstone/Grand Teton and Black Hills SD and Teresa somehow got pregos with twins in that thing, 65 Pontiac Stratochief w chromed indian head badge and headress behind the front wheelwell, and after that all were front wheel drive, a few Toyotas, Honda Civics, Acura Integra, 4 Saab turbos in a row, 1 automatic 9000, 2 9000’s with 5 speeds, 1 Saab convertible Areo 6 speed, all the Saabs drove well past 300k and I’ve never had to replace a clutch in them.

          Siblings and I all learned to drive in a 65? Volvo w non syncro 1st and 64 Ford Comet wagon, 6 cyl 3 speed manual w non syncro 1st, in Regina (the city which rhymes with “fun”) Sask,
          in the winter… on the snow, that’s not a complaint, I think it’s best to learn on the snow, in the most basic of vehicles for similar reasons to have your first job at McDonalds or cleaning cars like I did…

          1. Yikes! Learning on a non-synchro! Comet no less. What a beater! That’s a challenge and a half. I had no problem on my 69 VW bug … until that one red light, right turn at the mid slope steep hill in my little town … and the angry drivers honking and shaking their fists as I killed it … over and over feeling for the friction point without rolling back … yeah, even the emergency brake trick was failing me.

            But that’s what the deep end of the pool does for you … I learned to swim that hill and never had another vertical start problem ever again.

            Oh! And my one non-synchro experience was my summer on the Ranch … where I was assigned an old POS late 50’s Chevy beater pickup truck with 3 on the tree. Yeah … there was some serious grinding of gears that summer … as I learned to ”listen” to the engine for the time to shift gears

            And yeah, if that vans a rockin, don’t bother the twins!

    2. I dearly miss the stick shifts from my old 84 Accord (bought in 89 from my sister) and my 97 Jetta. Will never forget that time my slutty coworker lifeguard Amy playfully grabbed the stick, looked me in the eyes and said “you’ve got a nice stick”. Ah, memories 🙂

    3. All the early Subarus had the transverse engine and manual transmissions. Got around great in the snow. They didn’t weigh anything (~2,100 pounds) so all the weight was right over the drive wheels.

    4. Subaru hatchback ’79 for me. 2 tone– white and rust. 4×4 available with a low range. I took it up a streamed when the culvert was wash up. Ah, Rust In Peace my old friend ROPOS. (I like acronyms, I named the car Rusted Out Piece Of Say…. what’s for dinner tonight?)

      Some words i still can’t say outside of anger in polite mixed company because it’s just not right.

      I thought the same, and stopped watching right after he said he chose a front wheel drive to explain how it all works. Why would you want to use a more complex example when you could use an older, simpler one?

  4. So many great trucks I still remember.
    A 66 Ford F250 2WD made of real steel. Cost me $800.
    A 64 Chevy C10 2WD Stepside that leaked about a quart of oil per tank of fuel. Hauled a lot of firewood with that one. Cost me $420.
    A 65 Ford Econoline I bummed around in for a summer. Cost me $435. New set of retreaded tires: $135.
    A 73 Ford Bronco I hunted elk in for a couple years. Sold it to buy Wife 2.0 a house. Bad decision. It would be worth $50,000 today.
    Not an automatic in the bunch.

  6. RE Manual transmissions,
    1940 flathead V8, 3 ton had to double clutch to shift gears (still did not guarantee grind free shifting) 2 speed rear end
    1956 Chevy 3 ton, wow what a step up you could shift thru all the gears using just one regular clutch
    1962 Chevy half ton, 3 on the tree, I passed my driver’s licence in that one. (Farm Licence )
    1983? Chevy S15 Blazer 4 speed. The wife learned how to drive that one then she got to drive all the Single axel then Tandem grain trucks. She went to town and got her air brake certification.
    2-3 different tandems over the years none memorable.

  7. One of the most interesting car I’ve owned was a 1975 Cadillac Eldorado. The classic pimpmobile. A 500 cubic in engine, front wheel drive two door sedan. No tranny bump in the car and being a caddie, had all the toys. Twilight sentinel that lowered the high beams to incoming traffic, adjustable steering wheel, electric self-closing trunk, repeater lights on top of the read window (so you could tell what your back lights were doing), channel seeking radio (analog, mechanical ka-chunk) air conditioning (compressor musta weighted 100 pounds), etc etc. I bought it second hand because it was the largest car I ever saw. Plus big ol Caddie. Never had any problem merging in traffic.

        1. It was my phase of second hand Cadillacs. I could not afford new cars so I bought second hand Caddies, people concerned about gas mileage sold them cheap. My best one was a 78 DeVille. 425 cubic inches. I put a lot of mileage on it, had it over 5 years and actually sold it to some guy who wanted it bad. Nothing like a big slack V8 to handle prairies cold. Drove through snow drifts on the highway just fine.

    3. There was an advertisement for the Olds Tornado. It was hooked to a travel trailer with a weight distribution hitch and its rear wheels were removed. Then it hauled the trailer with no problems at all.
      I tried to find it to share but seems it no longer exists.

  8. nostalgia time. 1st car l bought, 72 chevelle. 2 speed automatic ‘powerglide’ l think it was tranny.
    things went metric. l removed the dashboard and carefully applied a metric speedometer sticker bought from, where else, Cdn Tire.
    bought the car from my autobody shop owner/seller brother from stock he had.
    the exhaust manifold leaked and whistled. had it replaced.
    the missus learned to drive in that car. figured out what resistance and wattage resistors to apply a stick on rear window defroster in conjuction with a fan blower worked good. (trick was lots of resistance so fan didnt blow like mad). had to run in and out umpteen times with a small soldering iron heated on the gas stove to solder the wires together.
    learned to change the oil myself.
    popped one of the frost plugs out and installed a block heater in the opening. still got the scar on my rt middle finger from that modification.
    learned to do tuneups myself. 1st time l did found a broken pc of the previous rotating thingy on the distributor shaft. huh. sold it 10+ years later in a yard sale.

  10. TousiTV is considering moving is operations from the U.K. given future government repression and Islamic threats to his family. He says he wants go a country where constitution freedoms are protected. He said the forthcoming repression against the new media has to do with forthcoming regulation of the new media.

    I mention this since the same repression could becoming to Canada. I could not find a link to a written discussion concerning the U.K’s repressive regulations.

            Just remembering the fallout of some previous comments and how the MSM made hay from them. Midterms coming up so no reason to rile up the other team and give them more ammo. Jackson did have a lot of sway in his community.
