Kennedy was keen to draw Canada deeper into the American sphere. Diefenbaker, who held the more traditional attachment to Britain, balked at the invitation to join the Organization of American States.
Diefenbaker would not allow American nuclear warheads on Canadian soil and Pearson would.
The first US nuclear-armed missiles arrived in Canada on December 31, 1963. These were CIM-10 Bomarc surface-to-air interceptor missiles, which were equipped with nuclear warheads and deployed to Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) stations in North Bay, Ontario, and La Macaza, Quebec.
all U.S. nuclear weapons were removed from Canadian soil by 1984, …with the final nuclear-tipped Genie missiles leaving Canadian bases in July 1984…
The Liberals were willing to do anything to win the 1963 election, even sell out Canada’s sovereignty and security to a foreign nation. The placement of US nuclear warheads on Canadian soil made Canada a potential battleground in a Nuclear war between the United States and Russia.
Rumours suggested the missiles in question were obsolete and useless.
Diefenbaker also bunted heads with Eisenhower over B52s carrying armed A-bombs while passing through Canada. The bombs were unarmed while over US airspace.
Also, it has been suggested that Pearson was a Soviet mole. Believable because Pierre Trudeau was the result.
I’m not surprised that Jack Kennedy thrust Pearson into office.
I am surprised that President Nixon didn’t have Pierre Trudeau removed from power and replaced by someone less inclined to make common cause with Fidel Castro. The CIA organized regime change throughout Latin America for far milder offenses than were committed by Pierre.
What stayed his hand remains a mystery. Possibly Canadians were considered “White” and a coup would have looked bad? Actual White (English) Canadians would have been happy to see Pierre go long before he did. Both English Canadians and Americans would have been spared a great deal of misery had President Nixon persuaded a few English Canadian army officers to send Pierre, Maggie and the boys on a helicopter ride over the St. Lawrence River.
It’s the French Canadians that thrust Pierre into office who called themselves “les nègres blancs d’Amérique.” A clear-eyed observer would have understood French Canada to be a version of Mexico with six months of winter, bad food and ugly women, and no more reason to be exempted from the Monroe Doctrine during the Cold War than any of a number of banana republics in Latin America.
Not to mention Canada’s military government might even have been the first to inspire genuine pride, as Chileans remember General Pinochet. Oh what might have been!
Believe it or not, but sometimes your conservatives are considered even more of a threat than your liberals because you’re not our friends.

Re Nixon not removing PET, my guess he had his hands full dealing with the Vietnam War and its winddown and after that the Watergate scandal.
It doesn’t matter if nor how the Liberals benefit from a foreign entity. It will never be investigated by the authorities nor our media. But if a MAGA Republican was handing out MAGA hats had a Conservative Party rally it would be the end of democracy. Think about how much media play Bev Oda’s $15 orange juice got verses any number of Liberal grift scandals. The rink is always tilted in one direction in Canadian politics. This will never change.

Geography made Canada a potential battleground, thus NORAD. The warheads belonged to the US and the compound where they were held were “American territory” and guarded by US troops and dogs. They would also supervise Canadian Armourers loading the Genies on the Voodoo.
