Doomberg is a podcaster on financial markets whose insights I find quite valuable, although I have yet to understand why he covers his face with a green chicken cartoon. At the 14 minute mark in this interview he gets into the economics of energy and how that’s going to affect the outcome of the war in the Ukraine. In a nutshell, it’s not looking good for Zelensky.
“…once the Ukrainian counteroffensive of 2023 was defeated…it was very clear that this had converted to a grinding war of attrition and Russia was always going to win that war….I’m shocked by this…western techno-arrogance…[Russia] is not a gas station masquerading as a country. It…has a strong manufacturing base, excellent energy resources and a long history of marching east to west.”

But its solders are badly trained, badly equipped, and badly led, which means it loses military resources at a faster rate than Ukraine. Many of its recent military advances, as small as they are, have come at enormous cost of men and resources.
Further, its economy has stalled. No manpower, high inflation, rising taxes, and tight money are sucking the economy dry.
And Russia is STILL GOING TO WIN despite all of that (true or not).
That’s the simple, inescapable reality….so what’s your point?
My point is that Ukraine’s situation is not hopeless. Things change. There are many things that could intervene:
o The Russian economy could collapse.
o Putin could attack a NATO country.
o Putin could fall sick or be assassinated.
o There could be revolt from within Russia, either civil or miliary.
o China could try to annex part of Russia.
And a hundred things other things we can’t even imagine. The longer Ukraine holds out, the greater the chance something happens to end the war.
It’s hopeless. Has been for awhile.
“It’s hopeless. Has been for awhile.”
Absolutely it is. All realists recognized this long ago.
No, it’s not hopeless. There too many variables right now to call the game.
“And a hundred things other things we can’t even imagine. The longer Ukraine holds out, the greater the chance something happens to end the war.”
Quit grasping at straws. Zelensky could also be assassinated any day. Or a sudden asteroid strike or our sun going supernova could also wipe out all life on earth, right?
You are just in love with your own voice.
Sounds like you heard an opinion you disagreed with.
Yeah, yeah, sure, sure.
They’re doing So bad, they’re still winning.
Hint, HOPIUM is Not a strategy, and that’s all ya got.
Keep huffing and puffing, you might blow down that brick house one day. Don’t give up, LOL.
Giving up when there’s countless things that could turn the tide isn’t much of a strategy either.
Your hero Bidihn was doing SO well, wasn’t he?
You sound exactly like a NeoCon, don’t know when you’re losing, cuz your bloodthirsty needs still haven’t been met.
You’re the type that would drive this into a nuclear war, the height of stupidity.
Take the L sewer rat.
ByTheSea, do try to learn how to disagree without spewing out a load of fantastical personal attacks. Seriously, grow up.
And Ukraine has more than hope going for it, but they need that too.
No, that part is very true. In winning they aren’t really winning.
Ukraine is losing, but Russia has done such a poor job of it that they aren’t really winning.
I would argue all of your points KM, but I realize that it would be futile. I have come to understand that you are in fact a cunning Russian agent whose prime directive is to follow Sun Tzu’s rule “When you are strong, appear weak”
“I would argue all of your points KM, but I realize that it would be futile. I have come to understand that you are in fact a cunning Russian agent whose prime directive is to follow Sun Tzu’s rule “When you are strong, appear weak”
Or he’s just a common, garden-variety attention whore with delusions of grandeur.
There’s nothing strong about Russia right now. Do an internet search on the state of the Russian economy. Red lights are flashing.

Yeah, the same western propaganda machine that’s been spewing BS and gaslighting for the last three years, that “Ukraine’s winning” and other such nonsense.
You do like pissing up a rope, don’t you?
Could go into history, but you’re an Egyptian citizen. Full of Denial.
The seizing up of the Russian economy is being reported by news outlets on the right, centre, and left.
But you know better because… reasons. Yeah, it’s not me that’s in denial.
Yeah, the same western media that’s been lying since 2022. But, you’re too hypnotized with “official” sources to consider it’s a mass propaganda campaign.
Out of hand, you’ve also dismissed Doomberg’s analysis, without merit.
Admit it, you’re really a lemming.
When you don’t want to hear some news, you go all out on the denial, don’t you?
Yes, some news organizations push bogus or poorly supported stories from time to time. But when almost every news desk in the world reports that the Russian economy is slowing, it’s almost certainly true. The fact that you don’t want to hear that doesn’t make it propaganda.
They aren’t that strong though.
Russia has been resilient, but even they, with their famed resilience have felt the strain of this…very stupidly prosecuted war, a war that I still don’t really understand the beginnings of (no, I don’t believe that freaking propaganda hogwash about freeing people from the nazi hordes!; that’s bs).
This only works from a post-modern, end of history, end of states point of view.
“Doomberg” is using a very subtle voice modulator, or at least the spokesperson on behalf of “Doomberg” is using a voice modulator. That suggests a known person. My understanding is that “Doomberg” is a collective of various people. And, without knowing who they are, and what their actual motive is; it’s hard to give credence to anything they say.
Saying that China came out on top in reference to an “economic war” is suspect in itself. Personally, I think China continuing to exist in its current state is a longshot. They’ve recently increase the number of riot police on the mainland (again). That suggests turmoil in the Provinces beyond the normal. Their draconian efforts to lessen debt within the population indicates desperation to some extent. Their current efforts to set up shop in foreign countries such as Vietnam and Mexico to get around a multitude of export expenses just took a major hit as various large nations moved to renegotiate trade agreements and will continue to do so.
That said, “Doomberg” may be perfectly correct in his assessments, but without background on the provider, it’s hard to take it seriously.
I consider Doomberg to be informative and mostly correct. I am dubious in his faith in Carney being a closet pro hydrocarbon agent who Trump brought to power to cheapen US energy by developing more take-away capacity from Western Canada. Trump may have helped bring Carney to power but I see no magnanimous motives for doing so.
“…and a long history of marching east to west.”
Hmmmm…true to some extent – let’s not forget that Russia itself has been invaded multiple times. Poland, Japan, Sweden, Mongols, France, Germany just to name some. Giving the country a healthy dollop of paranoia.
Ukraine and Russia will both lose. It remains to be seen who will lose worse.
Ukraine lacks the strength to take the fight deep into Russia in any meaningful sense.
Russia lacks the strength to delivery a fatal strike to Ukraine without the use of nuclear weapons which would result in permanent, crushing sanctions.
If Russia fails to defeat Ukraine, Putin will be “removed” from power. If Russia defeats Ukraine, but the cost is seen as too high, Putin will be “removed” from power. He might be pursuing a long-term, medium intensity strategy so that the final bill comes only after he checks out by natural causes.
This “war” was never about Russia taking over/defeating Ukraine. Never.
It was about saving the ethnic Russians in the west of Ukraine. Mission accomplished.
Russia fights a war of attrition. Saying that over and over is tiresome. Learn how countries fight. Russia is doing as fine as any country funding a war effort can. Anything else is propaganda, the sanctions have been less than effective, with the result if BRICS becoming a known economic block.
Martin Armstrong can detail this much better.
Don’t promote the BS line of the EU Neocons, Russia is not moving on Europe, they have nothing to offer Russia except for millions of useless third world migrants.
They’re after Russia, because the country has plentiful resources, which Europe has depleted. It’s envy, plain and simple.
You’ll get diabetes with all that sugar coating.
If the Ukraine war was about protecting ethnic Russians, Putin would have limited his invasion to the eastern and southern parts of Ukraine where almost all ethnic Russians live. Instead he made a strike for Kyiv, getting within 20 km before being forced back. It was an obvious attempt to overthrow the entire country.
“Instead he made a strike for Kyiv, getting within 20 km before being forced back. It was an obvious attempt to overthrow the entire country.”
Pure speculation, backed up by nothing.
Putin’s stated intent was to stop the slaughter of ethnic Russians by installing another pro-Russian government like the one Ukraine USED TO HAVE before the Americans engineered the overthrow of that legitimately-elected President. That’s also why he didn’t just flatten Kiev when he was denied capture of it, and why he doesn’t flatten it today despite having *more than enough* firepower to do so.
Pure speculation? The evidence is that he assaulted Kyiv, rather than just invading eastern Ukraine where the ethnic Russians were.
And so far as stated reasons, Putin gave half a dozen. Pick whatever lie suits you.
I’m not sure what’s behind this love affair for Putin. There’s nothing good you can say about the murderous arsehole, yet some westerners back him. “Tucker Carlson Syndrome”, I call it. Perhaps it’s people’s natural attraction to strong men, like when some westerners admired Mussolini in the 1920s.
Forced back? No, they pulled back, taking over Ukraine was never their objective, but, the Ukraine forces were so pathetic, they kept going within sight of Kiev. The Russians want Ukraine to be the neutral zone between them and Europe. Taking all Ukraine would have been easy, but not strategically smart over the long haul. Reasons? You’re not reasonable, not worth detailing, since you believe EVERYTHING the media gurgitates.
You continue spewing fantasies of CIA driven propaganda thru the Mockingbird media.
Russia isn’t struggling, Sparky.
Much the way that the German Army pulled back from France in 1944. They had had enough of trying to manage those cheese-eating frogs, and who can blame them? Patton had nothing to do with it, really.
Doomberg says many interesting things that make sense, e.g. one of particular interest to me being why gold has been and probably will continue to rise in value.
Not sure about comments re Alberta hydrocarbons. Makes more sense that Trump / USA would not want pipelines to tidewater for exports to China and would want a pipeline going south to the USA.
If Nat. Gas is so CHEAP [sic] in the USA and virtually FREE [sic] in the Permian basin … then why has its price inflated +46% over the past 5 years?
https://www.officialdata.org/Utility-(piped)-gas-service/price-inflation/2020-to-2025?amount=1.63
And why does PG&E charge me a LIFELINE rate of $2.88/therm … when the US average is $2.42/therm. US … AVERAGE. A 76% inflation rate? F-California. F-PG&E. And F-the CA PUC
I guess I need to buy gold to afford my cheap American energy [sic]?
Cheap in relation to, I suppose, but yeah that’s a bit of an overgeneralized, blanket statement that has never been true. Energy is never “cheap” because it is a necessity. As such it is vulnerable to artificial price inflation. People like to make their money after all.
According to Western Propaganda,”The Victorious Ukrainian Army advances Westward”.
As the map turns red.
This modern trench warfare is awful.
Butchery by drone.
“We will fight to the last Ukrainian” has been proven true..
The Russia Army sets up kill boxes and the Ukrainian Army marches in..
Is the Ukrainian High Command all Russian Agents?
My enemies are neither in Russia or The Ukraine..
And “righteous wars” are great attention diverters.
Especially for nations that have devalued their coin to that of lead and that are attacking their own citizens.
What are our interests in this region?
Why have we been spending billions to “train” the New NAZI armies?
Who profits from this?
Encouraging cousins to fight is a great sport,if you are a psychopath.
Otherwise what was the point of this idiocy?
The Ukraine has been a mighty expensive squirrel.
The blame for this war rests with Putin, not the west.
I think we can safely lay the blame at the feet of certain people in both the east and west.
No, I really don’t think we can. Putin released a blizzard of excuses for invading Ukraine, but it’s pretty clear what he wants. Territory expansion.
He rather clearly wants national reunification. The Russian provinces that went from the Soviet Ukraine to the national Ukraine could have been reclaimed instead for Russia, but as long as the Ukrainians were friendly and offered basic human rights, they made better economic sense there. It was the Ukrainians who repudiated the original deal, and the repossession of the Russian provinces was the necessary consequence.
Russia has more territory than it knows what to do with. Its economy and population are declining. It is not expansionist.
