The last time I checked, the NFU was down to a handful of members and were being led by “farmers” so far outside the mainstream that they hardly qualified as such. I don’t know what’s worse: that these clowns are demanding a form of UBI for farmers, or that a mainstream media outlet reports on it so uncritically.
Farmers want Ottawa to set up a 10-year pilot project that would ensure they receive an annual income of at least $50,000, a rate that would rise by inflation every year.
David Thompson, executive director of the union, says a guaranteed income would help stabilize farmers’ incomes, which are often unstable.
Now they’re channeling Zoran Mamdani and this nonsense gets breathlessly regurgitated by the same bunch of toadies.
One resolution calls for the union to lobby the federal government to introduce legislation that would put a cap on the profits of major grocery chains that control the lion’s share of the market.
Another resolution calls on union to create a national coalition pressing the federal government to purchase food directly from farmers to be sold at cost in a “network of national/provincial/municipal public grocery stores.”

Farming cash crops (from the tax payers) ?
What these people are looking for is a kolhoz. They need to be kolhozed good and hard.
Can’t they just grow weed like the farmers of Humboldt County?
Nobody is making money growing weed, Kenji. This is Canada, right? They can suck the profit out of anything.
What if they sell it out of the restrooms at the gas stations on the Res.?
The restrooms? Pot is sold on the Res. and stocked on convenient shelves near the check-out counter. Of course nobody (cough) makes any (cough) money on the stuff.
Yeah … I’m still thinking it’s 2007
I amend my statement to: nobody is making any money selling weed -legally-. Any retail stores you see still open, chances are good those are money laundering and/or illegal grow outlets.
An uninspected, off-the-books grow that doesn’t pay the weed taxes, and a retail outlet that doesn’t pay GST/PST and assorted weed taxes, that’s different. They might make a little money.
The -big- money is in cigarettes and always has been. The demon weed is insufficiently habit forming and not enough fun to make the big money.
They were always a communist fringe
Hey! They’re certified organic communist minge.
“David Thompson, executive director of the union, says a guaranteed income would help stabilize farmers’ incomes….”
Always amazing to me that these socialist retards never seem to think a TAX CUT would stabilize farmer’s incomes a lot better. Maybe cut the income tax, and the carbon tax, and the land tax, and the sales tax, and so forth.
And $50K/year? That’s beer money these days. They’re talking $50K when a tractor costs $200K? That’s f-ing stupidity.
$50k to leave their fields fallow. That’s part of the return to earth movement or something. Fallow fields and a BIG screen in every room.
Yup. The NFU is a collection of old hippies and downright commies … but dont expect any of the other Ontario farm organizations to come out against this state welfare proposition.
All commies should be composted.
Or Canada’s Conservative Parties, for that matter.
Interesting how the talk is always of a minimum income. What if they make too much money? Who gets that?
Is there any business, corporation, charity and activist groups in Canada that isn’t asking for a taxpayer handout? Canada needs serious foreign aid, corporate welfare and social welfare reform, not more entities draining taxpayer’s money.
“…federal government to purchase food directly from farmers to be sold at cost in a “network of national/provincial/municipal public grocery stores.”
And they would quickly discover just how expensive “at cost” is in a government store.
If you wanted to nationalize the means of production, lets say agriculture, imagine a way to seize the private land…. hmmm
One way is to use identity politics and aboriginal original title to overrule fee simple and devalue it substantially as no one would touch it after clarity of who really owns it is lost. Aboriginal cannot sell it back privately, its sold to the crown. This is me wearing my tin foil hat ! And now one of the largest private farms in Canada after purchasing just recently has decided to offer for sale several ranches in BC.
Sure. Pass a law saying that their net profit margins may not exceed 10% of sales. Many people are dumb enough to think that’ll make a difference.
