It’s one thing to sign up to defend your own country, but quite another to be sent to fight for another’s country, especially for one which you may not agree with anything on, and even less for what Canada has become. There hasn’t been a single law or policy I’ve agreed with put in place by our federal gov’t in recent memory. None. Nobody in our family is Ukrainian, nobody in our family is Russian, what does the “French elitist” have to say to those whose family’s emigrated from Russia?
I doubt anyone in my family would sign up to fight for what tier 2 Canada has become.

A solid argument can be made for taking up arms against our own federal government rather than for fighting our government’s enemies and causes overseas.
I doubt Russia will enter a major war any time soon, and might never again be a major conventional military power.
They couldn’t even overrun Ukraine, a country with 27% of their population and no air force to speak of. This shattered their trust in the might of their military, as huge flaws were exposed in their soldiers, officers, and equipment.
And Russia’s population is falling. Most critically, their military-age population is plummeting, as the last thirty years has seen a massive baby bust that’s only getting worse.

In the near future, Russia’s military will be rebuilding after being ravaged by the Ukraine war. But it won’t be easy, as oil revenue is down and the Russian government is running a deficit. And they won’t be able to borrow to rebuild, as no sane investor will buy Russian bonds while Putin is in power.
A bit like Afghanistan showed most NATO countries were moochers and paper militaries. Little Canada did more than many larger NATO nations, and we know what state our military is/was.

Russia’s economy and government finances are a lot better than Canada’s. We also have had a huge baby bust as government inexorably grew and cost more and more, consuming an ever larger share of the economy making it unaffordable for the average Canadian couple to be able to afford kids.

I used to be that a short cut to getting citizenship was to join the military. If you’re willing to die for a country then you’ve earned the right to be a part of it. It might be a good policy to go back to.
I dunno. There are some bad examples like (of course) the Romans. They tend to become mercernaries in outlook and sometimes blackmail the native population that gets too lazy to join up. I mean look at Canada, joining the military has always been very far from the majority of people’s minds. People don’t know the military and the movies they see about it are usually crazy as hell. They all think about the infantry, period. And the recruiting posters and commercials are always the same. 3 people, 1 air force (woman pilot), 1 Navy (visible minority of no discernable ethnicity) shooting a bearing and one Armyperson of the combat arms, maybe white. Meanwhile the CF is crying for doctors, nurses, dental hygenists, clerks, maintenance personnel, etc. Jobs that people actually want, a lot women do also. But all they want to present as the face of the Army is GI Jane.
I think I grew up in a slightly different generation than you. About half of my friends joined army cadets. About two thirds of those joined the reserves. Only a few went regular forces. I agree it is the minority but the military did carry quite a bit of respect, probably because so many of our fathers or uncles served in it.
As for looking for people in the professions or trades, the problem is that the same people are in high demand in civilian capacities as well so the army is competing against the private sector. Not sure what the solution is for that other than to offer to train people for those jobs in exchange for service.
It’s not generational I think it’s local. The CF does train people and gets paid back for service. Military college is a good example. There are programs to pay the tuition & provide salary for needed degrees in civvy universities. A high school degree is the only thing you need to become an apprentice aircraft tech or any other tech job. The CF will pick it up from there. But it means you have to get off your butt, do basic training and do the tech training and serve for a while and it might not be fun. DND does a lousy job of recruiting. The Air Force can tell you exactly how many people of what trade they need forward to 5-10 years. But they don’t recruit, another outfit in DND recruits. They have no skin in the game and are not accountable to their clients.
