Over at a Globe and Mail comments thread, one anonymous poster said something about Mark Carney that I found striking and illuminating. He called Carney “arrogant”. Carney has carefully crafted his public image, with help from the corporate media, as being “competent”, “well-educated”, and so forth. And so far his favourable public image continues.
I think his arrogance comes from his university experience. His undergraduate work was at Harvard University, where he graduated magna cum laude. He did his master and doctorate at Oxford. Both are ultra-prestige schools — I’m not saying “prestigious schools” where prestige is deservedly earned — but prestige in the sense of undeserved high-class reputation. At Oxford students study in cloisterd houses under a master, where snobbish ways are taught and mastered. One learns high-class living, sort of the difficulties JD Vance had at Yale when confronted with the complex tableware at a posh dinner.
But Mr. Carney ladder-climbed at the Bank of Canada, using his prestigious cuniversity redentials. He has published virtually nothing in academic journals, where research must go through a blind, peer-reviewed refereed process. His ladder-climbing took place among his friends and colleagues. And oh boy, he has a doctorate in economics from Oxford! I concede that Carney is intelligent and has worked hard. But as a retired economics professor I have come across a number of snobbish, arrogant people in my field whose well-crafted image dominated actual competence.
In the economics profession arrogance abounds. But good economists are humble in that they realize the shortcomings of their field. Humble people understand their flaws. I have this feeling that Carney thinks he’s better and smarter than everybody else. This is his weak point.
Then there is also his huge financial wealth. Sorry for this over-long post.
Mark Carnage reminds me of Sir Humphrey Appleby
I quite enjoyed your post, sir.
If I might pose a question, What do you make of the fact that Powell’s Federal Reserve employs 24,000 people? I confess to being mystified at what they do over there, but it certainly wouldn’t seem to need a staff like that to generate the errors we observed during Biden’s tenure. Cheers.
“I concede that Carney is intelligent and has worked hard.”
You are confusing education with intelligence. Carnage is educated. He is not intelligent except for his ability to fake his way through.
Many PhD’s are too stupid to survive on their own. Yes, they may be geniuses in their field but are still dumber than a sack of hammers in basic life skills.

When I was in university we’d occasionally go have a beer with some profs. A few were pretty decent to talk w/ over a cold one. Others couldn’t cobble together a coherent conversation for love or money, yet were considered geniuses in their field.

“The Commons yesterday by a 177 to 163 vote passed a cabinet bill granting citizenship to the grandchildren of Canadians abroad. … and people actually believed the Liberal government wanted to slowdown migrants.
“Cabinet is proceeding with a digital identification system for claimants of federal benefits including Employment Insurance and Old Age Security, says a budget note. The Department of Employment has repeatedly promised it will not be mandatory: ‘Cohorts of society may already be somewhat distrustful of public institutions.’ ”

[The Liberal] Cabinet will again raise the national debt ceiling for the third time in four years. The Department of Finance in a budget notice said it would hike its borrowing limit by 20 percent to an unprecedented $2.54 trillion: “The current government is the most expensive in Canadian history.” — Blacklock’s Reporter

A fine? Now shall we ask Del Mastro what would happen if a conservative did something similar. “Del Mastro was convicted in 2014 and sentenced to a month in jail, four months’ house arrest, and 18 months’ probation. He was also banned from holding any public office while serving his conditional sentence, and from running federally for a period of five years.”
