  1. It seems that these days propping up ontariowes failing economy is job 1 for the feds. It has been ever thus, except when propping up quebec, however it is now much more overt than before.

  2. When the construction price per megawatt of nuclear is over twice the construction price per megawatt of natgas and coal…perhaps building nuclear power is a poor choice at this time. I’m a fan of nuclear power but not when the costs are this high. Waiting for nuclear power construction costs to come down is the most cost effective option. In the meantime, build more natgas power plants and keep the existing coal plants operational. Ignore Ottawa’s climate change nonsense.

      1. Here’s the thing: submarines have long had nuclear generators for propulsion and all onboard necessities so why can’t that technology be applied to onland sites at a reasonable cost.

        1. Because the reactors used in Subs and Aircraft Carriers used HEU, and most reactors for civilian use are much lower?

    1. I agree, more coal stations, a mix of power sources is essential for reliability and strategic energy security. But, also, I maintain the costs for nuclear power stations are artifically high.

  3. Just because Ontario and Québec get something doesn’t mean the same for out West. Anything that might be offered to the West will have miles of strings attached.

  4. As much as I applaud the renewed interest in nuclear power, I am wary of this headlong rush for SMRs. I sense that the eco-mania of radiation phobia, resulting in impossible delays and restictions on new nuclear power stations, is the main driver for enthusiasm by politicians for SMRs. Beware politicians’ enthusiasm for a new technology, it becomes a fad and every jurisdiction must become the newest, greatest, silicon valley, green energy power house, intelligent city or electric battery manufacturer in the world. We all know what happens when politicians and bureaucrats throw our money around without thinking. Yes, I know, politicians and bureaucrats thinking? What am I saying?.

Sure, develop SMRs, there are many applications for them, but for large scale base-power, let’s continue developing large power stations and fuel cycles. This truly is an industrial opportunity for Canada, we do genuinely have natural advantages; into the breach in the eco-mania we must go.

    1. SMRs other than the ones for military applications, are more expensive than building a full reactor.

  5. Saskatchewan needs to build an old style ugly nuclear plant, the one that accidentially generates some electricity while enriching nuclear material for our very own bomb.
You know we will end up having to nuke Ottawa..
Their compound stupidity ,dishonesty and basic evil guarantee it.
