    1. there ya have it. Elon is
      a technical genius.
      impervious to ‘the narrative’.
willing to step into the breach (Gina Carano) aaaaaand
      a comedian to boot.

  1. pffft. suffice to say mr amazon aka jeffy bezos is a MULTIBILLIONARE because getting to that level is partly by neglecting technical issues and hardening the product.
buuuuut jeffy long ago took his cue from the likes of zuckerberg and looked aside, waffled, crossed his fingers no one would notice and took his ie OUR chances.
l used to sell surge suppressor when they were the equivale of $1000 in todays dollars.
oh man l remember a HUGE hydro spike in hamilton. big big one time increase in sales
    all
    after
    the
fact. l tried to sell them with every system. nope. nada. dont need it. l got a power bar.
    etc etc.
(one might find this analogous to the trust required to vote Liberal buuuut . . . . . . )

    1. EVERY piece of electronic gear I care about has a UPS sitting between the it and the wall plug.

  2. Now just think what a bunch of Chinese EV’s in Canada might look like the day Beijing decides to shut them off.

    1. “… the day Beijing decides to shut them off.”

Or the day they decide to remote-drive all the cars somewhere and set them all on f1re.

An electric self-driving car in somebody else’s country isn’t just a car. It’s a drone.

  3. I do this for a living.

Computers go down. It’s a fact of life. There’s no such thing as 100% uptime. The only relevant questions are do you have a plan for when they do, have you tested that plan to be sure it works, and – this is the important one – does the plan cost more to implement than you’ll lose when the computers go down. Proper high availability is a lot more expensive than you think and determining that last one accurately is Hard, which is a big part of why business continuity specialists make a lot of money.

For the vast majority of the affected apps and companies, I guarantee you they looked at that third question and said “Yes. Fuck it.”
