The R Word

So the mainstream financial media is finally waking up to what most of us on SDA acknowledged long ago.

The job market is exhibiting some other recessionary characteristics, too. Desjardins Economics, in a report last Thursday, said the current youth unemployment rate “is now at a level more commonly seen during a recession.”

The unemployment rate for those aged 15 to 24 in August was 14.5 per cent, according to Statistics Canada, compared to nine per cent in July 2022.

  1. To my understanding, this does not include those who are employable, but have given up looking, or not started looking.

  2. The ‘R’ word derives from the ‘C’ word … Capitalism CAUSES Recession. Jobs are inhuman. Food, Healthcare, Housing, and Transportation are all human rights! Nobody should have to work. Everything should be FREE!

I learned this all from some nepo-immigrant-baby who’s running for Mayor of NYC.

Oh! And ‘white’ people should pay MORE in taxes … or get stabbed in the neck from behind and killed. According to the same mayoral candidate.

    1. Amazing, isn’t it? The Fed has successfully strangled our economy to tame inflation, right? All congratulations go to that GENIUS … Jerry Powell. He’s destroying jobs. Destroying investment. Destroying the economy.

Pssst … hey Jerry! Show us your “scientific” equations? Show us how you calculate economic death. We The People would like to know … even though you’re an unelected bureaucrat who is killing personal wealth among the little people.

But THANKS Jerry !! Because my Stocks are UP today!! Yeayyyy!! Wall Street WINS!!! The little people LOSE. Genius. Genius, I tell you …

      1. The Federal Reserve has a dilemna. Tariffs are known to be both inflationary and contractionary. For the first problem, the FED should set interest rates high. For the second, they should set them low. So how should they respond to Trump’s massive new tariffs?

I know how Trump responds. He fires the head of the Board of Labor Statistics for poor jobs numbers, and berates the FED for not doing the impossible.

        1. Psssst … the tariffs aren’t massive. Nice try. And they will NEVER be directly passed through to consumers lest ZERO sales by the price gougers.

Any inflation from Trump’s tariffs PALE by comparison to my Auto Insurance policy and Homeowners policy renewals that spiked UP by another 21% this year … after spiking UP 22% last year.

What’s Jerry done to tame my Insurance policy inflation? Nothing. Those are BIG numbers in my household budget. Paying another dollar for some cheap crap from Communist China doesn’t mean a gawdddamned thing to me.

          1. These tariffs are expected to increase federal government revenue by 10%. That’s a substantial tax hike. You can use whatever adjective you want.

“And they will NEVER be directly passed through to consumers lest ZERO sales by the price gougers.”

Passing on the cost of tariffs is price gouging? Are you sure you’re not progressive? Market forces often ensure that less than 100% of the cost is passed on, but if venders don’t pass on most of it then they lose money, and that is not sustainable.

          2. KM, during Trump’s first term he increased tariffs on certain countries and products and the economy hummed along nicely.

          3. The current tariffs are not only far larger and more extensive than Trump’s first term, but the erratic way that they’ve been rolled out has likely unnerved people. It’s hard to plan when the rules change weekly. As a result, businesses hold back on new investment until predictability returns.

          4. Erratic? Yeah, he shouldn’t have been willing to NEGOTIATE the terms of the tariffs on a nation-by-nation basis … he should just have set his autopen to write one number and gone to the beach.

Do you even hear yourself talk?

          5. Yes, erratic. Here’s a list of Trump tarrif announcements from January 20th to May 25th. Thirty-two in all. He’d announce a tariff, then announce its postponement, then announce a change to that tariff’s rate, then postone that change, and on and on. It was like a monkey on a typewriter:

            https://www.pbs.org/newshour/economy/a-timeline-of-trumps-tariff-actions-so-far

And of course the changes didn’t stop on May 25. Business people are left bewildered, and now have no idea what to expect. Trump’s actions seem custom made to destroy business’s trust in his ability to manage trade.

          6. You’re a “conservative”? Who gets his talking points from PBS?
Do you even read your own posts?

Sayyyyy … didn’t Trump just ELIMINATE Taxpayer funding of PBS? No wonder why.

          7. I’m not getting my talking points from PBS. I’m getting data from them, as they did a nice job of compiling it.

Good job distracting from the main point though.

          8. Data? Distracting?

Here’s the equivalent “data” provided by PBS about Kenji’s morning:

            Kenji woke up
            Kenji immediately used the toilet
Kenji brushed his teeth and rough combed his hair
Kenji shuffled to the kitchen and filled the electric kettle in the large single bowl, brushed stainless steel kitchen sink
Kenji set the kettle on its electric heating element
Kenji poured Pete’s Garuda Blend coffee beans into the burr grinder
Kenji turned the dial to 12 cups, the daily required coffee.
Kenji reached into the upper cupboard and removed a single Melita #6 filter
Kenji folded over the bottom edge of the filter and placed it into the Melita cone.

… this is the equivalent of “data” mined by the geniuses at PBS … nonsensical detail that nobody cares about in the least.

          9. What nonsense. Trump was contantly postponing tariffs, changing tariff rates, and changing what goods were subject to tariffs. It was impossible for most people to keep it straight.

Businesses generally approve of Trump reducing regulations and taxes. But his erratic on-again off-again announcements and fringe economic theories are neutralizing any confidence that garners.

          10. You’re right, that’s nonsense. All I needed to say is:

Kenji woke up and made the coffee.

That’s the simple fact. All PBS needed say is that Trump imposed tariffs, then negotiated the final terms with each nation as they were finally forced to the table. (They finally had to take him seriously … unlike Kanada who still has elbows out as they sink). All the other information is rubbish.

  3. Governments, being what they are, will make things worse.
Politicians, being who they are, will blame anyone but themselves.
Citizens, being brutally ignorant, will ask the government to, “Do Something!”

  4. Youth unemployment is 14.5% because the jobs that were kids’ first jobs are now third world first jobs. I am unsure why Canada needs any immigration. I liked Alberta a hell of a lot better when it had 1.5 million instead of the current 5 million. Pollution and wall to wall people. Who needs it?
