“The outcome fell short of expectations in European capitals…”

Conservative Treehouse;

The intransigent European Union are hitting a dead end with immovable Trump on the issue of tariffs. The resulting dynamic is what we would expect given 75 years of the Marshall Plan (European Recovery Plan) as part of the EU’s only point of reference.

In order for the EU to maintain their socialistic form of government, they need to continue the economic benefits from one-way tariffs that exploits the American consumer market. President Trump’s plan to force reciprocity is against their entire economic foundation. The EU simply cannot fathom life without the status quo.

In many ways the EU is in the same position as Canada. From their perspective, economic reciprocity is not sustainable; they would have to change their social compacts. This is the core of the conflict.

The EU trade delegation hit a brick wall in Washington DC, as the U.S. trade team reiterated the baseline tariffs are not something within the negotiation dynamic.

  1. Winning and loving it. Margaret Thatcher warned everyone in the Socialist dream states about the consequence of running out of other people’s money and that day has come. America First!

  2. EU like Canada is about to run out of other peoples money.
This will be good for Canada. Who cares about EU.
Hopefully this will speed up WEXIT.

  3. Tariffs against the US were encouraged by the US as part of a mutual agreement after WWII;
the other side of that agreement was all those nations should merely, but fully, resist communism.

The US, through 1991, lived up to their side of the bargain.
    The other nations did not.

  4. Jimmy Carter from 1/20/1977 to 1/12/1981 resisted Communism?
Now, that’s funny. His state department loved Commies at least initially.
Remember him telling the American people, “They had an inordinate fear of Communism?”
    Well, I do.
He loved the Ayatollah Khomeini and his “revolution” and let it happen along with the French.
He detested Israel but had no issues with Islam
He let the Iranian Regime kidnap our embassy employees for well over a year and did NOTHING – NOTHING – That is an Act Of War by the way.
He was a feckless jackass. I did business with him well before anyone ever heard of him – he was a worm.
The USSR finally pissed him off, and what did he do? He told the US athletes that after a lifetime of hard effort he wouldn’t allow them to compete in Moscow in1980. Lucky for the Mother of my three children that she won her Gold Medal in Montreal in 1976. What a courageous and bold move. That sure scared the Kremlin.
He was easily our worst post WWII president but then we got Obama and Biden. I am amazed at our resilience and pray the same for you guys in Canada after Trudeau and Carney. Here’s hoping.

  5. The Euros think their shit doesn’t stink.
They’re like Canadians only more civilized yet gayer, but with better transportation infrastructure.
Both groups think they’re better than Americans and have been disrespecting them for decades.
Although Trump doesn’t walk softly, its nice to see him use the big stick.

    1. I will never pay-for what I can’t afford, or that which is artificially overpriced. THIS American won’t be paying for ANY product marked-up to spite Trump and to pass-on Tariffs to the beleaguered American consumer. So go ahead and try. Be prepared for your products to sit, unsold on the shelves.

As a related aside … my local Safeway has dramatically dropped prices (had lots more “sales”) since a year ago. My theory as to why? Because: competition. I have personally moved MOST of my grocery shopping elsewhere, and it’s NEVER going back. Safeway thought they could exploit the wave of inflation … by OVERinflating their prices. Well they thought WRONG. Yeah Safeway … that’s called the FREE Market. Consumers are FREE to find alternatives, or just keep their money in their pockets.

  6. The host has finally had enough of the parasites. I am currently a Canadian taxpayer, who has to reconcile annually with the US. If Canada tries to maintain it’s social fraud while having to contribute to it’s own defense, it will make even more fiscal sense to dump the Canadian taxpayer part. Shithole.

    1. Canada’s deficit projected to be $92 billion
      (Cdn)

US deficit for fiscal year 2024 was $1.8 trillion.

Canadian budget $487 billion Cdn ($11,700 per capita, or about $8500 US per capita)

      US budget $7.3 trillion US.
      ($21,000 per capita)

The US has far more federal government spending than Canada.

      1. Joe

The USA is fully developed, Canada has a couple hundred mile strip north of the 49th, so yup, USA spend is greater than Canada’s. Now try taking yer Trump /USA hatred else were.

        1. Don’t see any Trump / USA hatred there at all. He’s just stating facts. If I was a Yank I’d damned well be concerned about the deficit. I hope for their sake that their electorate isn’t as blissfully ignorant and/or uncaring about their deficit as our gormless voters are about ours.

There are people who don’t/can’t read the room, and you appear to be one of those, with that comment. Joe’s post was/is a negative slap at Trump /USA, and he has displayed that sentiment before.

        2. Dick

Do you approve of massive government spending?

Are you wanting Mark Carnage double Canada’s deficit to match the US?

And re your comment that Canada isn’t fully developed, are you suggesting Canada import 300 million people so we can be as developed as the US? IMHO that would not be a good idea.

PS I’m totally on board with Trump controlling illegal immigration. I’m not impressed with Trump’s spending. I thought DOGE was supposed to cut deficit spending.

          1. Joe
Trump doesn’t control ‘spending’ congress does.
Your ignorance of facts is troubling.

          2. But his ignorance of fax protects innocent people from harassment by fax machine, so there’s that.

      2. Per capita National Debt is just about as meaningless a stat as you can get. Now try National Debt to GDP

        Canada is 111%
        The USA is 124%

Oooops … Canada is rapidly LOSING their GDP as they de industrialize and they are cut OUT of the US consumer economy because “elbows out” or something. Look out below Canada … Your National Debt to GDP is about to spike upward … far past the US … and you were already but a tiny fraction of the US GDP.

Good luck with your Orangemanbad strategy

        1. Kenji

The US just raised its debt ceiling by $5 Trillion dollars. You okay with this?

          1. Nope. No I’m not. However, I also don’t believe the CBO projections that never consider supply-side CAPITALIST increase in business activity and tax revenues … but actually claimed Biden’s “Infrastructure” and Green New Deal would create NO additional debt.

The CBO is a fully communist .org operating on the taxpayer dollar.

          2. Kenji

How should the US get its deficit spending under control?

Carnage has decided to redefine Canada’s deficit into operating deficit and “investments”. This sleight of hand is just plain stupid.

In the US, are people arguing that deficit spending will result in economic growth and increased tax revenues? That sounds suspiciously like Justin Trudeau’s “the budget will balance itself.”

I’m afraid the current level of government spending/borrowing/money printing will eventually result in hyperinflation. Fortunately, I won’t be around to see it.

          3. I believe the tax CUTS spur commerce, business and hence tax revenues. However I believe we need to actually CUT spending. I don’t believe in modern “magic” monetary theory.

The problem is the “rules” Congress abides by … because it’s historic precedent or something. Every Bill gets porked-up with garbage spending. We need a Congressional LINE ITEM VETO … now! Screw the old “it’s our Institutions” nonsense.

      3. US federal spending is calculated differently. They also have global military bases to support.

          1. No. I believe Canada … as a member of NATO should take over responsibility for 1/4 of all those bases.

      4. A couple things. States barely engage in deficit spending, where provinces have greater combined deficits that the feds, by a lot. Of course (not that I like it) the US government spends more, they spend 5% on defense, where Canada spends next to nothing, but more importantly, the US is a wealthy country, Canada is now a poor country, and getting poorer rapidly. Canada’s wealthiest province has lower median income than the poorest US state. Shithole.

  7. Let me guess … Canada and the EU are counting on the ‘TACO’ Trump meme to be an actual thing … Right? Just wait-out that brash bully Trump … and he’ll cave to your wishes.

Good luck with that strategy. Good luck following make-believe desperate-Dem. memes as public policy.

    1. ” Just wait-out that brash bully Trump … and he’ll cave to your wishes. ”

It boggles the mind knowing that so many people out there actually believe that. Where have they been for the last decade, I wonder? In a cave?

  8. The Carney government’s decision to align Canada with the EU in general and France in particular is very foolish. While those nations may share his ambivalence toward the Trump government and the United States, we have no common cause with them and they aren’t good trading partners for Canada.

The blood of France is slaked with the blood of thousands of patriotic young Canadians who fought for their liberation in two world wars, but we’ve had remarkably little to show for it in return. For the past 100 years, France has bought exactly two things from Canada: Jack, and sh*t.

It’s a fool’s game to pursue an illusory market for our goods in Europe at the expense of a real and long-standing one in the United States.

    1. “It’s a fool’s game to pursue an illusory market for our goods in Europe at the expense of a real and long-standing one in the United States.”

That was Pierre Eliot Trudeau’s gamble, too. Didn’t work well for him either, geography being immune to such things.

    2. I meant to say the *soil* of France is slaked with the blood of Canadian patriots… I’m terrible at typing.

“Joe’s post was/is a negative slap at Trump /USA, and he has displayed that sentiment before.”

You can speculate on his motives for all you want, but Joe’s post was a completely neutral statement of fact. He may have posted it simply for information purposes; he may have intended it as an anti-Trump slap; or, more likely, he may be really, really good at “reading the room” and posted it purely as a pretty mild provocation – in which case, it certainly worked … perhaps beyond his expectations.
