The myth of the “Trump whisperer” comes crashing down.
Dan Knight- Carney’s Digital Tax Debacle: How Ottawa Triggered a Trade Fallout with Washington
The Digital Services Tax, passed by the Liberal government and implemented under Mark Carney’s leadership, applies a 3% levy on revenue—not profits—earned by large digital firms operating in Canada. And it’s retroactive. That means it’s being applied to earnings from as far back as January 1, 2022, with companies forced to make lump-sum payments by June 30, 2025.
The elbows are flapping now – Canada rescinds digital services tax to advance broader trade negotiations with the United States (update by Kate)

I don’t know if massively subsidizing an industry is part of what was on the negotiating table but I think that the MSM’s forever welfare/bailout should be mentioned by the US as often as necessary. Sure the US subsidizes some industries too…
but… do it, do it until they bleed.
C’mon PM Bobblehead! Put on your euro scarf and flex your little pinky! Show him who’s boss!
Jamie, are you referring to his pinky that he rubs his nose with frequently, even though he looks too uncool to be a blow boy? Grey Eminence.
That, or his other little pinky.
China bought Canada. Everything Canada sold to the US, China will buy or burn. The goal is to cripple the US. Imagine the economy of US Russia and Canada.
“But here’s the good news: Canadians are waking up.”
Sure yeah whatever.
But here’s the fake news….
I dunno. Trump said he liked Carney, didn’t like PP.
Only 15% of CPP funds invested in Canada
Guess that’s schmart.
Carney wants to play with tariffs?
Game on!
The elephant in the room is what happens when they try to collect that tax.
“Sorry we won’t be allowing anyone from Canada to access our content, especially anyone with a gov.ca address”
Or put it another way
“GFY we ain’t paying”
This is Liberal extortion, plain and simple. If these media companies refuse the Liberal $$$ shake-down, will access to the platforms be blocked? I think that maybe the Liberals plan, is to use this issue to further censor what Canadians can access and see. All about more Liberal/WEF control.
The Canadian government doesn’t have the ability or the authority to do that. The FAANG companies can cut off service to Canada with a high enough degree of coverage to effectively black it out, though. And the ability to detect VPNs at the server-side has improved to the point that those won’t help either.
Marx Carnage! Destroying Canada to save the world!
Leftists have always been incapable of figuring out first order effects of their atrocious policies, never mind second and third order effects, ahead of time. And when those effects strike, they’re totally baffled.
No, it just means they need to stack more bodies on the pile so that everyone remaining gets their heads right and STFU about it.

Screw Stockholm.
If Canada were to succeed at this, then every other nation in the world would attempt to extract a similar levy on digital service businesses not based on their soil. That this would be the end of every large digital services company on the planet is blindingly obvious, so these companies have to refuse the criminal Canadian hostage-taking simply to survive.
“so these companies have to refuse the criminal Canadian hostage-taking simply to survive.”
Your hair is on fire over a 3% tax?
““so these companies have to refuse the criminal Canadian hostage-taking simply to survive.”
Your hair is on fire over a 3% tax?”
Retroactive to 2022, and one that Canada has *no power* to enforce anyway? It was an idiotic attempt, and the US companies concerned simply laughed in Carney’s face.
I’m a little confused. Can these companies just cut off service to Canada, if they determine it’s not worth it, that is.
“I’m a little confused. Can these companies just cut off service to Canada, if they determine it’s not worth it, that is.”
Absolutely they can, and they would have.
I assumed that the US Big Tech firms would just curtail their business in Canada and tell Ottawa to shove it. Retroactive tax? As if. Or maybe open a little Canadian branch and let it puddle along, paying Canadian taxes out of the little tiny Canadian sales they get. Like Ford Canada, GM Canada, what have you.
But I like this much better. “Shove your trade negotiations and eat tariff, miserable socialists.”
That’s going to leave a mark.
I expect Amazon will simply raise its Canadian prices by 5 to 10 percent to cover the tax.
Of course, the only one who will pay these taxes are Canadian citizens. We’re always the suckers.
Meta? Twitter? Hard to raise the price of a non priced service. Shithole.
Let me amplify Trump’s claim this morning … again … that Canada should be the 51st State. He said you might as well … as your economy is utterly dependent on the USA.
No worries … your PM and the Eastern half of Canada are pivoting East across the Ocean to the EU. Your EU, universalist, socialist, post nationalist PM will embrace the EU … and maybe make Canada the 28th State in the EU. Hooray Canada and the oh so kewl Euro trash.
In the American Revolution, War of 1812, and the Fenian raids we had to bury hundreds if not thousands of Americans to maintain our freedom and would welcome the pleasure of doing it again.
Ha! You’re joining the EU … people famous for throwing down their arms. And I doubt 90% of Eastern French woke Canadians even know how a firearm operates. Hence we can focus on the tiny number of Canadians who would actually defend their country.
You’ll be picking up a weapon, will you? Thought so. The CAF is not even regular army worthy for the US, a couple guard formations would do nicely. Shithole.
@scar Haha, good one.
That’s a pretty butch statement from someone living in a country that has all but banned private gun ownership except a few low-tech duck guns. The US could take over with practically any state National Guard, and that’s a pretty crappy legacy left from our respected days in WW2.
Pity you can’t erase comments, eh? Bet yours would be history if you had the chance.

The USA really doesn’t need 30 million or so more Democrats. Canadians need to get their collective heads out of their collective butts.
Embrace the EU?
The EU seems more intent on doing what it can to turn North America into a colony again.
I can understand what it is the euro weinies want, further the only reason Carney and the rest of the Laurentian Elites want such an arrangement is a faint hope that they will be accepted as equals and allowed in the club.
Ironic that the yanks figured out how the euro weiners “accept” the colonists after the battle on the Plains of Abraham.
“Thank you for your sacrifice, now here’s the bill for all your troubles “
Agree with you 100% on that. The current PM is not for Canada but for EURO visions. WTF happened? Canada is being parceled out to non Canadians overseas now? Sad state of affairs IMO. Carney’s task is to dismantle it all for the “globull” class.

Glo-bal news simply passed over the DST, and went straight to the interview, and glossed over the milk cartel, stating that the US can export mega gallons to us…no details of course to give canadians the real info….elbows up…
The primary result of all this posturing and puffed up “strategic” counter action (such as the DST) will be a specific and individual Trade negotiation separate from Mexico.
NAFTA and USMCA are a luxury of being able to rely on sensibility. That’s no longer the case, so detailed individual trade deals will now replace an agreement between three countries. There will be less wiggle room and tolerance for violations as a result. I suspect the penalties will be more stiff as well.
Carney caved on the DST. Next they will hopefully cave on supply management. I’m no fan of tariffs but this is one way to excise some of the Banana Republic shite disguised as governance in the deranged dominion.
Carney caved on the DST. Next they will hopefully cave on supply management.
He caved on DST ’cause it didn’t cost him any votes. No way in hell he caves on SM, for that very reason.
Trending: “Canada rescinds”.
Next, all Liberal policies since 1969.
DST was, “to address the taxation gap”

I love how they are trying to sell themselves as, The “NEW Government”.
Elbows Up is going to find out the hard way, with 47. F.A.F.O.
How stupid are liberal Canadians?
How weak minded and malleable are they?
They are pissed right off at Trump, and Carney, because they don’t have to pay more for Netflix.
And they hate Trump because he wants the dairy cartels and tariffs that guarantee higher grocery prices for Canadians removed.
“That Orange monster is trying to make my grocery bill smaller and make me pay less for Netflix!”
And you think we can vote our way back to sanity?
