      Hey! I thought your Parliament VOTED to impose this tax … yet some bureaucrat can rescind the tax? Democracy!! Canadian-style. Gawwd your country is fkcued.

        a) Minister Champagne was elected to Parliament.
        Kenji,if you had said “some a**hole rescinded” I’d agree with your take.

        b) All Canadian cabinet ministers are elected MPs. Very very rarely are they unelected appointees. In the US the cabinet secretaries are unelected appointees (confirmed by the Senate).

        c) Champagne would not be making this announcement unless directed by the PM.
        Carnage didn’t want to make the announcement himself. Guess he wanted fewer elbows up jokes?

        d) The digital services tax was a very stupid idea. It should be killed.

        e) Aren’t Trump and his unelected cabinet trying to stop the US government waste and bad policies much of which were VOTED on and approved by previous US Congresses?

        I don’t see anything wrong with Trump trying to cut waste approved by Congress.

          PS … the US courts have BLOCKED Trump from rescinding spending that has already been authorized by Congress. Only USAID has been dismantled … because it was uniquely created by the Executive Branch of government.

          Trump and the Congress are working on rescinding profligate spending … through the proper channels.

      2. The digital sales tax was an order-in-council and was not introduced through Parliament. So, no, our Parliament did not vote to impose the tax. Also, the tax has not been rescinded yet because our Prime Minister cannot rescind it directly. That is why CNN reported that the tax “will be rescinded” probably by another order-in-council once Parliament resumes (they seem to be on an eternal holiday).

        A few things about the digital sales tax…

        1. It’s retroactive to January 1 2022. Even though the tax was not go into effect until July 5, 2025 there would have been a lump-sum payment due for the prior 3 years. That is probably why Trump took his stand on Friday. It gives Canada no fidgeting room to maneuver.

        2. The tax includes “non-transacted revenue” which affects things like subscriptions. If you have a Netflix subscription, for example, a percentage of that will go to the Canadian government, payable by Netflix.

        3. The tax includes supplies purchased by Canadians even if the supplies are located outside of Canada.

        The Digital Sales Tax is just another way the Canadian government is attempting to raise revenue indirectly without increasing the Harmonized Sales Tax or Federal Income Tax. I’m glad the Orange Man took a stand, forcing Canada to act rationally for a change. Elbows Down Carney is paying the price for 10 years of the Idiot King rule.

          1. I stand corrected. The digital service tax was passed as part of bill C-59 on June 20, 2024 and was put into effect through an order-in-council on June 28, 2024. But back to Kenji’s point. How can a bureaucrat (or even the Prime Minister) cancel an Act of Parliament? Would they not have to table a bill to cancel the tax and vote on it?

            I’m not sure, but I think via Orders in Council the PM can alter Acts of Parliament. Which may be the point you were making.

            Most bills provide for “regulations”, which can be administered by the PM and or Ministers. For example, they can reduce the tax rate from X% down to 0%, which effectively guts the tax.

          1. I don’t know the parliamentary procedures of your odd governance, except to say it APPEARS awfully anti-Democratic when the full body of your Parliament can be overturned by a single MP’s decree.

            I assure you that NO SUCH THING can be done to simply dismiss (rescind) a Congressional vote … by a single member of Congress.

            So I will ask YOU … describe the parliamentary procedure which LEGALLY allows a single member of Parliament to overturn a vote by the full Parliament.

            Most bills in Canada provide for the PM (or Premier), a cabinet minister, or bureaucrats to regulate and administer acts of Parliament /Provincial Legislature after the enabling act is passed by Parliament or a Provincial Legislature. This can include setting dates and times for carbon tax increases.

            For example; I worked in the oil industry in Alberta. The Oil and Gas Conservation Act allowed the Minister and bureaucrats at the Oil and Gas Conservation Board to administer the Act, approve or deny oil and gas developments, adjust fees, adjust tax rates, etc.

            In the legal area, even though Parliament passes a law criminalizing certain activities, the Crown can decide not to prosecute certain types of offences, such as drug use. I believe the unelected DOJ in the US has similar authority. In fact weren’t unelected DOJ staff (or equivalent state staff) responsible for not prosecuting drug, immigration, or fire bombing offences during riots?

            Similarly weren’t unelected DOJ staff and FBI agents responsible for malicious prosecution of election protesters at the Capital, and COVID vaccine refusers?

  9. Yesterday was liberation day for my wife, dog and I. We cut our Bell cable, as in no more cable TV. We bought two Roku units for our television sets, and the system seems to work OK. I can even get Bloomberg TV live this morning on YouTube.

  10. Speaking of Franco – my family had a table olive processing/packing facility near Sevilla. Spain was orderly and no Communists back then. I thought Spain was great. At the time I was a spy for the US against the USSR and its allies so kind of liked the way Franco ran Spain. My trips to Spain were enjoyable.

    Today Spain is overrun with Muslims and idiot Communists/Socialists run the place.
