This is a new twist on Trudeau’s old demand that oil and gas producing provinces needed to implement a carbon tax to get a social license to build pipelines. Just replace carbon tax with decarbonized oil. Like the carbon tax demand, once the provinces and oil companies agree to “decarbonize” their petroleum production and spend billions of dollars…the federal government will fail to uphold their end of the agreement. The federal government will simply move the goalposts and make further demands. When the Carney Liberal government gave provinces, indigenous groups, etc. a veto over pipelines, it should be obvious to Alberta and Saskatchewan that there will be no new oil and gas project approvals. How many times are prairie premiers going fall for this B.S.?

Petroleum products are hydrocarbons, so to “decarbonize” them chemically you would end up with pure hydrogen which is a very difficult thing to store and transport. The alternative meaning of decarbonize is to pump CO2 into the ground. The energy needed to separate CO2 from the atmosphere, compress it and inject it into the ground in large quantities (many Gigatonnes is my guess) would be enormous.
Only idiots didn’t know that there would never be a consensus on building a pipeline across Canada, this includes every liberal voter.
