  3. I will offer this small nugget of hope. My wife, a staunch NDP, Union supporter is highly likely to vote Blue this election. My son and D I L have already done so, both defecting from the Orange to the Blue and excited to do so. Very small sample but, if they can see the light….

        Canadians reaction to Covid told us all we needed to know about their disposition.

        Yes, Trump’s hectoring and tariff power play feeds into Canadians’ innate insecurity and anti-Americanism. But the long game Trump is orchestrating is about isolating China, and part of that is the wink and nod to us that America knows we have been slowly subverted by the Chinese, and that this will no longer be tolerated.

        As an addendum to the previous point, Canada can elect a net zero charlatan who pledges to keep our resources in the ground all it wants, but ultimately we have no say in it if the world’s powers decide otherwise.

    2. I have an elderly relative who’s a lot like the example you describe. I’m not sure who she’d vote for but I wouldn’t be surprised if she casts her ballot for Carney.

      It wouldn’t be the first time she would have exercises poor electoral judgement. She considered Christy Clarke a crook, voted for someone worse (Horgan), and then complained about how bad things in B. C. had become after the NDP took over.

If people who voted for the Trudeau Liberals 3 times cannot make the connection between a decade of Liberal policies to the decrease in living standards, loss of basic civil liberties and the increase in crime, poverty, drug abuse, homelessness, corruption, etc…then brain dead is an accurate description. Like I’ve said before, a democratic country can survive a few bad governments, a deep recession and even a war but a country cannot survive ignorant voters.   11. Yes! If the Maritimes go red on election night it is all over for the Cons. Remember Canada is Upper Canada, Lower Canada, NB and NS. It has been that way since 1840 with the Act of Union after the Durham report. The family compact is alive and well in central Canada and favors the Liberals as Canada’s governing party. They do not care for the west except as their own hinterland of natural resources to be exploited at will while the Maritimes are viewed as a comical afterthought. The west has no say in any election.

  12. The big story in the election is the collapse of the NDP. I get the impression that Singh is literally out to torpedo his own party. It’s anyone’s guess as to whether the party will ever manage to resurrect itself after this catastrophe. Will they merge with the Greens? The problem for the CPC is that most of those NDP votes are headed to the Liberals and there’s nothing they can do about it. Same goes for the socialist BQ voters. They can’t appeal to those voters because no one would see it as sincere.

    The Canadian left is more united than ever now that the focus is Bad Orange Man. It’s blinded them to literally every other relevant issue.

      No, what we really should be doing is showing that we can cooperate like a good neighbour by securing our border, cracking down on fentanyl and illegal immigrants crossing that border and spending more money on our own defence. That will be the quickest way to earn Trump’s grudging respect…and we NEED that respect, since we have no other cards to play despite our “elbows up” tough guy talk. Don’t give me this “we can hurt them just as badly!” NO WE CAN’T. Not even close. Our trade imbalance is far too great to overcome, sorry. Fantasize about ‘fighting Trump’ all you want…reality will quickly slap you silly.

      Yes, we need to diversify our economy and our export markets to be less reliant on the US. No, we cannot do it overnight…it will take years, if we start right now. Right now, AT THIS MOMENT, we need to appease the US or risk the destruction of our economy. This is not ‘caving in’. This is not ‘cowardice’. This is not ‘surrender’. This is the inescapable REALITY of Canada’s situation AT THIS MOMENT.

        A disintegrated Canada could be treated in the same way as the US mid west was after the Northwest Ordinance, or the farther West was after the Louisiana Purchase. Specific areas or districts would apply for Statehood and it would be granted by Congress on the merits of the application.

        That’s my conclusion as well. The Americans would love to have Alberta and Saskatchewan join them, but would want nothing to do with the rest of Canada (particularly Quebec).
